Xbox One Power Supply Issue - Light Flicker Analysis

This is the only video that actually shows the power supply and the light indicator on it and you easily say what’s wrong with the console and what you did to get it to work. Thank you I’m gonna open up my power supply and there’s apparently these capacitors that bulge when bad and I think that’s what is wrong with our power supplies. I’m sure urs is fixed by now tho! YESSSSSS THANK YOU! My light is orange but has a very slight flicker, Xbox One either won't make any sound, or it half chirps and the power light won't flash, no matter how many times I attempt to boot it, only chirps about a 3rd of the times. Going to get a new power supply cause I think that'll resolve my issue, and this video makes me feel like I'm not throwing away $35 to solve the wrong problem.

I was having the exact same issue. Someone mentioned using a blow dryer to warm the power brick, I used a heater. This absolutely worked for me. My other option was leaving it outside in the heat. Thank everyone for their input and you for creating this

Same thing just happened to me. Everything on the internet indicated that everything should be working so I was bewildered that it still woudn't work until I noticed the orange light flickering up close. Glad to Know I'm not the only one.

Definitely not the only one. It seems to be far more common than I thought, and I am happy this video has helped many out. If you replace your power brick, let me know how it goes. I had one person so far who said it did not work, and their xbox was still non-functional, but for everyone else, it seemed to work, myself included.

This video is spot on. I have an original Xbox One and last week it just...stopped working. I was about to do a deep dive on it but I noticed it had a faint flicker to the power block. I'm about to head out and grab another power supply, so I don't know if this is the fix I needed, but my symptoms are exactly the same and I was beating my head against the thing just like you were so I'm optimistic. Just wanted to drop a comment and a like for you putting a fix out there that's other than what 1000's of other people are parroting. No problem at all. I completely agree with you here. I diagnosed this issue, but found no details on it. I don't make too many video game videos, but felt this needed to be said. dude! I see the flicker too. Took apart the console inspected everything, re-thermal paste, upgraded to SSD...nothing. Purchasing a new power brick and I bet this will fix it. Thanks for video!

Unfortunately, that is not something I can 100% answer from there. It does *sound* like the your PSU is the issue, but the issue with the Power Supply Unit not turning white could be either device. Aside from bringing it to a repair shop to check, nothing wrong with buying a PSU to check. If it works, awesome news, you're back up and running. If it doesn't work, then you know it is the console, and you are out about $25 (which you can make some back by selling the PSU on Craigslist or something, if you wanted to).

Aw damn...that sucks. First...are you using a separate surge protector power outlet? If yes, then unplug from that, and go straight to the wall, as surge protectors are known to give issues If no, then I hate to say it, but you may have a defective console 😬

Im having this issue where the power supply turns off a little bit when it is plugged in from the back of the Xbox. And as you mentioned I didn't plugged the power supply into the Xbox yet and there is this orange LED light. I plugged it out of the outlet and the orange light is still showing. I had the same problem and had tried every combination of resets I could to get my Xbox to work and nothing worked until I saw this video. I took the leap of faith, purchased an aftermarket power supply for $20 and now everything works. FYI…. I originally had my Xbox inside a closed TV cabinet and forget to open the doors for ventilation. It overheated and killed the power brick. Now I keep it out in the open where it can easily circulate fresh air. 👍

Xbox one had this issue so while I was examining it I noticed the slight flicker but I wanted to confirm that the slight flicker was normal or a indictator of a bad power supply, and this was the only video I could find that seemed to confirm my thoughts so after getting a new Power Supply (3rd party one from PONKOR) I plugged it in and it worked fine so thank you for making this video and hopefully my 3rd Party Power supply doesn’t blow up the Xbox, but just in case I make sure to unplug it whenever I get off

Do you have your power supply hooked up to a surge protector? It's a known issue that they interfere with each other. Otherwise, it really could be a console or power supply issue. Hopefully it is just the supply

Ok, so I'm going through something similar w my Xbox One. Original Power supply died on me so I bought a new, Game Stop brand one. Got home, hooked it up... Mine stays red with a green blink each second. Xbox still does not power on. Any ideas??

Hmmm. Ok, this comes down to a couple of things. As simple as it is, either the power supply you bought from gamestop is bad (which I've seen happen), or the issue is with the Xbox one itself. First, to be sure, make sure your Power Supply is connected directly to a wall power outlet, and not a surge protector. What happens if the power brick is not hooked up the the Xbox? Any issues or blinking? If so, you may have a shorted brick. Otherwise, I would say to bring it to gamestop and try and exchange it as defective. They'll either replace it or test it. If they test it and it works, then you know somethings wrong with the Xbox. If they just replace it, then you try the new one and you'll get an answer that one. That's probably the easiest way instead of pulling out a multimeter and start testing it directly.

Exact same issues. Even though Microsoft's diagnostic tree said the xbox was to blame, mine had the very slight flicker on the powersupply LED as soon as it was connected to the xbox. With an Aftermarket power supply from Amazon, problem has been solved.

I should add the xbox would not power on, but would make a very feint sound when trying to press power button or disc eject. I assumed power issue hence the order of new brick. I’ll respond with info on a positive or negative resolution when brick arrives in a day or 2

Aw damn, that sucks. Out of all the people who watched this video, it seems to work for 99 out of 100 people. But there is the occasional person who actually has a failed console. Sounds like that may be the case for you. Just to be sure, are you plugging directly into the wall, or into the a surge protector? That is a known issue with xbox...go directly to the wall. But if that's what you've been doing, then you may need a new console or a console repair, unfortunately

Whoa, there is a lot going on here...you may want to get the Xbox checked. The green light on the power brick will stay on for a little bit when unplugged as there is a capacitor in the brick that holds charge for a bit. But for the other stuff, sounds like a lot of stuff going on...if I had to guess, the xbox is dying. Hope that is not the case.

My old one that came w the Xbox can turn it on and everything but turns off after 10 min and the power brick part with the two holes that connects to the Xbox gets really hot. I bought a new one and after a couple months it doesn’t work. The light goes on when I connect to the outlet but if I connect it to the Xbox the orange light flashes on and off. Idk the problem but it might be because I leave the power brick on my carpet while my Xbox is on the stand.

Being on the carpet makes a difference and can cause it to overheat. I don't know for sure, but this may sound like an Xbox issue, unfortunately. Honestly, may be the best bet to get it checked out by Microsoft or independent repair shop.

I've heard of this happening too. I assume the console then doesn't function at all? If it doesn't, then it can be either the console or the brick, but 95% of the time it is the brick. What is causing it, i'm not sure. But I have seen it happen

Hmmm, you may want to get your console tested. It should like the console may have an issue with pulling power from the brick. I'm not well versed in Xbox repair, but it sounds like you may have a Xbox issue

Hell yeah dude. I was just having the same exact problem today. The light just stayed solid orange and no flicker at all. Only thing different was when I tried to turn on my xbox one I heard the little chime it makes when its turning on but no round solid light came on the xbox. So I unplugged the power supply and tried it again and same very low volume chime but no white xbox round light ever turned on. I had to literally put my ear next to the xbox to hear the slight chime. So I figured it had to be the power supply not sending enough voltage to the unit. So off to Amazon i went and ordered and after market power supply before I even opened this video. It was a Ponkor off brand for $20.79. I'll update this feed tomorrow if it worked.

Unfortunately, not much I can help with there, as sucky as that is. It really comes down to having either a defective new brick, or a bad console. Do you have it plugged in to a surge protector? If so, that can cause issues as well.

Oh damn, that sucks to hear. I can't say for sure that you have the same issue, but I will say that my Xbox did do the same thing. It would make the power on sound, but would not turn on. Once I swapped the power brick, the issue went away. So it is possible that you may have the same issue.

mine turns off when i plug it into the console. if its unplugged and plugged into wall it can hold power all day long but second i plug it into console it turns off. Im thinking its a load issue.

Certainly sounds like it! Can't say for sure, but if the console causes it to turn off, sounds like it is not handling the load. There is an off chance that something is shorted in the console causing the load issue, but I would think that is far less likely.

@Goose Gumps V3 doesn't matter when it happens, to be honest. it can happen in the middle of gaming, overnight, during a power outage...failures are failures. Hard to say what the exact problem is, however.

This was a big help. Couldn't identify the problem through forums or microsoft. I was able to get my console to turn on by unplugging everything but the power, but i did notice the flickering after you mentioned it. Additionally my xbox had stopped sending on/off signals to my tv and audio reciever.

Unfortunately, I cannot say directly without being there. I would say, off the top of my head, that either 1. the new brick is a lemon, or 2. the xbox one itself is no good. Is it possible to swap your brick? Also, make sure you are hooked up straight to the wall outlet, and not to a surge protector.

Hey I’m not sure if you’ll even respond to this but I have a similar problem with my Xbox, whenever I try to turn my Xbox on the power supply’s orange light will dim slightly before returning to the normal solid orange, should I get a knew power supply? (Edit when I plug the power supply in it makes a squeak as if there was a squeaky fan inside, I have no technical ability whatsoever so I have no clue what’s going on)

I think so. I can't say 100% without being there, but sounds like the power supply may be the issue. If you can get one, you can try it and see. Best case scenario, you bought the supply and everything works..worst case scenario, the power supply doesn't work and you know the console is the issue, and you're out the cost of the power supply (although sometimes you can even get a refund on the new power supply depending on where you buy it from)

Yikes! That is not good. either the brick you bought is a lemon (it is rare, but can happen), or your Xbox is in need of repair. Before anything else, are you plugged into a surge protector? If so, plug it directly into the wall, as surge protectors are known to cause issues. Otherwise, you may need to get the supply checked at GameStop or get your Xbox tested.

@@wrgblackheart Honestly, probably get it tested with Microsoft or an independent repair shop. This video only covers the flickering light, but the issue you have, could be any number of things, from the power brick to the console itself. The capacitor in the brick could be bad, could be a wiring issue in either, the hard drive could be bad, something wrong with the motherboard, or any other thing Probably the only thing I can say to try, if you have the console hooked up to a surge protector, unplug it and plug it in directly to the wall. Otherwise, you may want to get it checked. Also, there is a ton of other videos out there to help out. The main issue you will have is, which one is the fix you need.

Idk if you still use the yt or not but I was playing bo6 today and my console randomly cuts off I tried cutting it on and it immediately cut back off I did the unplugging waiting plugging it back in pressing buttons all of that stuff, I took my brick apart and I plugged it in and noticed my light is blinking a very dim green light, but same problem as you unresponsive Xbox and I can’t find anything about it, right before the Xbox cut off it smelt like something was burning

Hard to say for sure since I am not there to test it, but it does sound like a power brick issue. If possible, you should get it tested. Or if you have a friend with an X1, see if they can lend you their power brick so you can try it?

It's a refurbished "game stop" brand one, has a green light instead of orange, but works just fine and it has a three-prong grounded plug unlike the original Microsoft cord (so a little bonus). To be honest, I am not entirely sure what the problem would be there, but it does indicate something is not working right. When the brick detects something is off, like a electrical short or some sort of voltage error, it will shut off. Sounds like that is what it is doing there. That is most likely in the brick, but could be in the console as well. It may need to be tested.

I currently have this flicker, my device started having slight power problem for months where it makes a sound when I try and start it, subtle sound if trying to switch on but when I unplugged all the usbs and hdmi and keep trying it works after some time. I couldn't answer that, unfortunately. It could be either be the power brick or the console. Most likely the power brick, but I've seen consoles do the same thing too. If you're handy with repairs, I would say to open the brick and test it..if not, I would put it like this....a power brick these days, a 3rs party one, goes for around $25-ish, give or take. If you buy one and it works, you saved yourself buying a console. If it doesn't work, then you're out $25. It would suck, but better than straight up buying a console right away. There are also repair places, but they're not everywhere. You could bring the console and power brick there and have them test it

That is not a good sign. The issue seen in this video can either be the Xbox or the power supply. 9 times out of 10, it is the Brick. But it can be the console itself. Unless you happened to get a defective brick (which can happen, but is rare), then I think your console needs servicing.

It is definitely possible that the brick can be the issue, if you have the flicker. Based on comments and feedback I have received, I would say about 90% of people bought a brick and it fixed their issue, while the other 10% still had a console issue. So it is definitely worth looking into

@@kaabankz1164 it's still worth looking into. If I remember, when I was researching my issue, your issue came up, and it can be either the power brick or console...50/50. For me, a power brick is about $25-ish. I would say it's worth considering. Best case scenario, you spent $25 and now have a working console again. Worse case scenario, you wasted a $25 purchase but can confirm your console is bad for sure. Then you could probably sell the power brick on Craigslist list or something (if you do online selling). Your issue is different than mine, so it is ultimately up to you, but definitely worth a consideration

@@ericjohnson7771 Ok, there is *potentially* good news there. Unfortunately, this issue can be caused by either the console or the power brick. But most times, it is the power brick. A few things you can try, if it is possible for you. 1. If you have your power brick hooked up to a surge protector, remove it and hook the Xbox up directly to the wall. 2. If you have a friend with the same Xbox One and can safely do so (due to Covid-19), see if they can lend you their brick quickly and try it out 3. Some electronic repair places will let you bring it in to test 4. there are videos out there that shows you how to test your power brick, but you'll need some things like a multimeter. 5. If all else fails, you can buy a new power brick. Best case scenario, the brick was bad and you are up and running. Worst case scenario, the new brick doesn't work, and you are out about $20-ish, but then you know the console is bad. It is a cheap version of a diagnosis (as some places can charge double or triple that just to test the console). Hope this info helps

Yep, the xbox one can be causing the brick to short out. As for the cause, there are many things, including a bad transistor on the board (or any other bad component). From my research at the time of this video, a short at the wiring just behind the power brick inlet on the xbox seemed to be a common issue, but I don't know if that is the cause for sure.

Sounds like an overheating or capacitor issue, but I can't say for sure. If you have a buddy who can loan you a power brick quickly, see if you can try that first. If not, is your brick under warranty? I don't think many 3rd party bricks have full warranties, but some do.

Exactly the same issue with he slight flicker it's so faint you have to stare at it to see it, tried all the soft power resets hard resets, pressing eject button 10 times etc i even took mine apart (it did need a clean so did that while open) not sure if anyone had the same thing but my Xbox does make a slight beep sound when I press the power button or eject button, like its trying to turn on but can't. Ordered a new power brick after finding this video, will let you know if this works but it's certainly sounding like it, thanks for posting!

When I was researching, trying to locate the issue on my xbox , this issue came up a few times, and I've read that it can be either the power supply (bad capacitor) or the console itself (won't boot, possibly bad harddrive). Do you possibly know someone with an xbox that you can try the power supply with? If not, I would say better to buy a power supply and try that, vs buying a new xbox. Worse case scenario, you're out $20-ish

Unfortunately, that can either be the power brick or the xbox, but more times it is the brick. If you can get your hands on another working brick (from a friend or craigslist or something) that would be a simple way to test (although you do need to dish out some money if you have to buy one). If you had a multimeter, you can do some electrical tests. But otherwise, getting another brick is the easiest way

As an fyi, I am by no means an expert on xbox repair, but when I was doing research, I encountered a few times where people had a Similar issue, and it seemed to be a console issue. It could still be a power supply issue, but I can't say for sure. Hopefully you get it sorted.
