Thank you very much for this video. I was doing it today and I used NT-H2 Thermal Paste from Noctua for the CPU and EC 360 Silver Thermal Pads (with 12 W/mK). The end was a little bit tricky to put the Xbox together but after watching the first steps again I finally managed it. I needed some hours but the result is just awesome! Since 2 hours Im playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and Ark - the Xbox One X is so quiet, cold and smooth like I never heared it before. Before playing Red Dead 2 the fans would be like a jet engine and now it’s genuinely whisper quiet. I re used the old thermal putty for the other chips, took it off and re rolled it into balls and then placed directly on the chips as mine came from the factory wonky and barely covering some of them! 👍🏼 To anyone wanting to bring back their One X to life do this and an SSD NOW!

Liquid metal could be used they use it on laptops that have no IHS and even Asus now applies it to most all theyre higher end modern gaming laptops with no issues non conductive nail polish can be used to protect outer smaller components to prevent short circuit it must be applied in layers . The NVme drive would work many who have tried say the Xbox One X IO bandwidth is limited to Sata III speeds ..600Mbps ..still fast but not as fast as nvme

I have used this guide to try and help my Xbox One X and I think I might know why there seems to be some disagreements on the thickness of the thermal pads with some saying 1.5mm and others saying 2mm. I had some leftover 1.5mm thermal pads from Thermalright and tested to see if these would be thick enough for my Xbox One X which was made in 2017. To my surprise they were far too thin to fit, I was actually able to slide them under the gap while still on the clear plastic sheet they come on with the cooler attached as it would be when refitted as normal. I believe this is because the cooler design is slightly different compared to the one you have here which is from 2019, the copper area where the pads and paste contact is designed differently on the earlier units so this might be why some say 2mm is what you need. I did buy some 2mm pads and sure enough they fit very well and I even did a test where I applied the paste and put it all together as it should be and then a bit later took it back apart to see how well the spread was. The paste spread perfectly with the 2mm pads on the VRAM first without any additional squashing down and then again when I tried to see if perhaps it would be better if they were squashed which produced equally as good contact since really these pads are quite hard anyway. I was hoping that some artefacting issues I was having were caused by overheating or a bad HDD so I also used your guide to install an SSD which worked great but even after changing out the pads and paste I still got the artefacting issues. I believe it has simply gone bad from age and the problems only happen when a game uses enough VRAM to go into the area where one of the chips is bad. Smaller games like CTR Nitro Fueled work totally fine without issue and medium sized games like L.A. Noire only experience very mild to no issues, however GTA V is very bad with the APU clearly trying to load the game data into VRAM only to have most of it end up going bad. Sometimes it will load up seemingly fine but then some areas have wild artefacting that comes and goes seemingly at random, others it will load in with barely any of the map present and loads of sounds missing, followed shortly by a crash. So in conclusion I believe this thing where people are saying they used 2mm and it was fine is when they have an older production Xbox One X rather than a newer one like you have here which is what I have and found that 2mm is also better. Sadly of course I can't fully test this due to the dying VRAM but from the increased heat coming out the back clearly the new pads and paste helped a good amount and even after gaming for a few hours in L.A. Noire there was no change in the fan speed or heat output proving the die contact is still perfectly fine with 2mm pads.

In my repair shop we usually use 1.5mm pads and green viscous thermal paste (just like the original one that you removed from the chips). The thickness of the pads also depends on their compression e.g. if it's soft pads then you can use 2mm ones but in most cases 1.5mm works just fine.
@J0cK3rFr3aK
@J0cK3rFr3aK 2 жыл бұрын
@@ElectronicsComputers the viscous paste you mention is called thermal putty, it's there to bridge larger and "non- standard" gaps (e.g. 1.3mm) the easy and stress free way
@kamojinkakujin9962
@kamojinkakujin9962 2 жыл бұрын
Same here! 1,5mm definitely too thin, i have a gap almost 0,4-0,5mm. one pad even fell out after turning around. So 2mm soft pads is the way to go. And i am also not sure if having less temp is a good thing, i think if i improve the heat conductivity, then the heat-sink should have more temp, as it is able to pull more heat off the chips? correct me if i am wrong. Still a good guide, helped me out.
@ZANTHERA
@ZANTHERA 2 жыл бұрын
@@kamojinkakujin9962 Yes you are correct in your thinking that more heat output is better, that means the heat is being removed from the APU and RAM more efficiently which will make it so their temperature is lower which can extend their life. If you've got barely any heat coming out of modern consoles then that's a problem.

Great job! I'm happy to help! From my point of view Xbox One X with an SSD is the best console. Super easily reparable and serviceable compared to Series X. If the SSD dies in Series S|X you can simply throw the whole thin into trash. For One X you can simply buy a new drive and clean install OS.

@ElectronicsComputers wow, that's fantastic to hear, I love the machine as a multi media entertainment centre. I bought it second hand too, so it cost me very little even with the upgrades. I love that you can do a completely fresh install Can I ask you, do you ever have difficulty taking out the screw, a lot of mine were very stiff. I had to use a pliers to twist the screwdriver whilst holding the driver in the screw head
@ElectronicsComputers
@ElectronicsComputers Ай бұрын
@@ClockinwithBen-lr4xk Sure, a lot of stuff comes to our repair shop with stripped or overtightened screws, along with a bunch of other surprises. I've even seen cases where folks were using superglue instead of locktight. There are special bits and tools for cases like that, or we can simply drill it out, tap a new thread, and put a new screw inside. But ultimately, a lot depends on having the proper tool in the first place.

hi, thank you for posting your videos, very helpful, I followed them re-pasting and swapping out HDD for SSD. One observation interpreting your MM max temps, all things being equal i would expect higher exit temps from a thermal transfer which has a higher efficiency between the CPU/GPU die & vram and the heat sink. My 1x had max temps around 58*C with fans on high, sounded like a hairdryer. After the replacing paste and pads Ive seen 71*C (Forza H 4 1440p 120Hz) with the fans hardly audible, higher than at idle which sees temps around 58*C as expected. I interpret that the MX-4 was least efficient with the lowest exit temp, also noting the ambient was higher.

Happy to help! I don't remember how that test was conducted, but it's not the temperature of the heatsink. I think we put that probe between the APU and the heatsink or the probe was attached to the side of APU die. With a high quality thermal paste the temperature of the heatsink should be higher.

Question. Why thermal pads and not paste on everything, or a thermal pad for the apu? Also, what kind of temp differences are we seeing by putting better thermal paste down? I know on pc, thermal paste is half the equation with good cooling, but afaik there are no liquid cooling options for the one x are there? I know it's a decent vapor chamber and heat pump, but I feel that performance could be enhanced even further by further reducing heat soak in the system with a good LC option, or perhaps modifying the case to accept a few HVLP 120mm fans. My one x is way out of warranty so that makes me wonder.

Thermal pads last longer and more effective in heat transfer than viscous thermal paste. Grizzly kryonaut is one of the best (if not the best) thermal compounds on the market and the difference between the original/stock thermal paste and this one is like night and day difference.

Good video! I recently changed the hdmi retimer chip my brothers xbox one x and changed the thermalpads with grizzly 1.5mm. When you mount the cooler on the motherboard with xclamp and screws you can see a small gap between the thermal pads and the ram. Have you noticed this? I guess when you reassemble the entire xbox it will compress the cooler against the board enough. But i have not checked. Are you sure that 1.5mm is enough?? The xbox seems to work fine though. Thanks!

The compressed area of the thermal pads equals about 1mm. So 1.5mm thermal pads will dodo the job. If you put 2mm pads on the memory chips there will be a 0.5-1mm gap between the APU die and the heat sink and your console will shut down after several minutes of using it.

@ElectronicsComputers

It's totally normal. The RPMs of Xbox fan is the best indicator of the APU temperature. When the thermal paste dries out it doesn't transfer as much heat to the heat sink as it was before and this why you get low temperature reading. After you've replaced the paste it started to transfer more heat from APU surface to the heat sink thus providing more cooling to the APU and as a result your heat sink now has higher temperature reading.

The fan responds only to the APU, not to the memory chips. Typically, we always replace the thermal putty on all devices if we remove the heatsink. This is because, unlike thermal pads which are somewhat compressible, thermal putty is not. If you remove the heatsink or PCB, the thermal putty won't maintain its original thermal conductivity.

I generally agree with the thermal paste you've used but to my surprise it appears it's actually performing worse if the test results are accurate. I say worse because so far from my research and test results from repasting old game consoles the heatsink should actually get hotter when the thermal conduction to the heatsink is better because it absorbs more heat from the components it's cooling. It might be a good idea to retest it. Gaming can vary the demand on the APU so i think it's better to do a test from a consistent load like siting idle on the main screen with nothing loading in the background for about an hour and measure the temperature for about 10-15 minutes and measure from the hotest point it got or maybe the average of the readings. i'm going to be doing this with my personal Xbox one X i recently got, i've not broken the seal with the Heatsink as of yet and the fan is pretty quiet so this should make for a good test suject. PS i have heard from someone on a Console repair discord server that the Xbox One X runs at a constant slow fan speed until(i'm asumeing the APU) reaches 70 degrees Celsius.

Yes, that's right, the temperature of the heatsink should be higher with good fresh thermal paste. The problem is that I don't remember how we attached the thermal couple. I think it was attached to the side of the APU die, not to the heatsink.

I just read all the comments and questions about the right thickness of thermal pads and I was wondering what exactly do you mean with the "compressed area" of the thermal pad. If you mean the thickness of the old thermal pad after the system (assembled) put pressure on it I have two questions. 1. How is the best way to measure the thickness of the pad? 2. To get the right thickness of the pads needed Is it always right to add 0.5 mm onto the measured thickness (compressed area) to compensate the amount of thickness the thermal pad lost due to the pressure? Sorry in advance for the many questions but it would be nice to know. PS: Great video.
@ElectronicsComputers
@ElectronicsComputers 2 жыл бұрын
Using a calliper you can precisely measure the thickness of the compressed area of your original green thermal paste (thermal putty). It should be about 1.4-1.6mm. 1.5mm thermal pads fit without any problem, I've never had any issues with that. If the pads will be thicker the APU may not make the contact with the heatsink.
@manuelpreier5868
@manuelpreier5868 2 жыл бұрын
Ok thanks, and when I measure the old green thermal pads should I then add some milimeters to the result, because the thermal pad has not the original thickness anymore because of the pressure or should I take exactly the measured value?

I'd add an extra 0.1 -0.2mm but the problem is that there are no thermal pads with such presize tolerance . You can buy 1.5 or 2mm thick pads. Technically, you can compress 2mm pads and make them thinner but not sure if you can make them all with the same thickness.
