You can play their games over the cloud on pretty much any device, or on a PC. They effectively killed the console by not making any actual exclusives for it. Right here is good example of why exclusives exist. I know some people want exclusive to go away but they are still the main way these consoles make sales.

I think it was a testament to Sony how well they turned the ship around with the PS3. I mean the 360 had everything going for it at the start of that generation including a 1yr headstart, Sony fumbled badly out the gate, yet Sony quickly saw its mistakes and corrected them to the point of surpassing 360 sales by the end of the generation. Thats no small feat. Microsoft tried to do the same thing turning the ship around with their XB1 with Phill's new leadership, but it was too little too late by then and i feel as long as the Xbox brand exists it will always be in last place just like it always has been in the past.

Phill Spencer needs to focus on good Xbox exclusives, rather than focusing on Game Pass and trying to push it onto Playstation and Nintendo 😂 Buying out 3rd parties isn't helping them either.

That's both their boon and bane. Gamepass is their flagship now, game anywhere, anytime with "amazing games". Yet their games are just that, gamepass filler. Mediocre quality but being pumped like coca-cola. Trying to consolidate the whole industry by themselves, little by little then giving them little projects that could fill their service.

Of all the comments here i think this is the most accurate. It's not the games. Most games are still 3rd party and they do have solid exclusives. The problem is they themselves don't push consoles. They push Gamepass.

I know I'm niche, but I sold my XB once they bought ActivisionBlizzard. I was already super-pi**ed about their acquisition of Bethesda. I owned all the consoles & a PC. But I'm not supporting such egregious anti-consumer practises. I'll pick up their games on Steam on a sale instead, or pirate/emulate them as I feel.

Xbox’s failure can also be seen in a positive light. It has shown if you are lacking vision, art, talent yet you are a trillion dollar company you can’t simply buy your way into success. Creative people take years to form ideas and foster talent. MS think they can just walk in with a blank cheque book.

@@Julian_14 RDR2 it's not my favorite game and it's far from perfect game, but the love and atention to detail put into that game, the quality of the content make it the best game evermade up to today, and maybe until forever if Rockstar screws GTA IV up, I can't see any other company making a game like that in next 10 years. TLOU it's not the greatest but it's up there, and I am not aware of any Microsoft title that comes close to it. Uncharted - do you know any other title that even comes close to it? Maybe Tomb Raider, but it's not developed my Microsoft. Grand Turismo - I don't understand it either. I only tried a couple of them back in the PS2/PS3 era, and all the cars I tried felt like I was driving a piece of soap. SpiderMan - Have you played anyother superhero games, most of them are just a piece of junk made on the lowest budget possible to release with the movie that will release close to it. At least used to be like this. Bloodborne - I don't play from software games.

​@@xicofir3737 In regards to Bloodborne. That is legitimately one of the best games released on the previous generation and Xbox gamers were not even able to experience it. We're not even mentioning Demon Souls.. both for PS3 and PS5. Its all these small little high high quality exclusives that Sony seeks out that Microsoft never ever has. Heck, even Rockstar had an agreement with Sony at one point to produce a unique IP exclusively for the PS3. Xbox just does not have meaningful exclusive titles anymore, like at all. All the Xbox exclusive games mentioned here.. I have literally never heard of. Outside of Alan Wake I cant think of any other high quality exclusive IP that didnt originate on the 360 (Halo, Gears, Fable). That is two generations ago. Even Death Stranding... a highly divisive game yes. But a unique very very high quality game that is at the higher end of AAA quality games. When I think of Xbox I have no idea what Xbox gamers are even playing. Dont get me wrong. The current gen has no games. But for previous gen? Xbox One and PS4? For Xbox there was literally no point in buying that console.

Gamepass would not exist if game sales were strong. The irony, IMO, is that gamepass is slowly killing the Xbox brand. Obviously great exclusives would be a big factor, but not enough when that exclusivity also includes PC. It's just not a desirable console.

Several factors: - "Next year will be THE year" since 2014 (and people online are still saying 2024 will be huge for Xbox) - Focus on subscription services rather than physical ownership, which may be good in the US, but not in Europe (people like to own stuff here) - Everybody stopped buying a Series S after mid-2022, even heavily discounted, it was a bad product all along

Name major releases coming from Microsoft studios, Starfield already was a flop (big sales but games have very bad opinion, having worse gameplay, systems then old Bethesda games which were bad too), so what will it be? Xbox sales were driven by the comparable cheap price of series s in comparison to the unobtainable ps5 along with the gamepass 36 month exploit. Things have changed, you can get a ps5 for just 100€ more than the series s and the game pass deal has gotten considerably more expensive, hence the year on year decline.

Sony is leaving much of that more unique AA experimental stuff to indie partnerships. Games like Stray, Kena, Sifu and Humanity have filled that role pretty nicely imo. They still have smaller games like Returnal, Astro Bot and Sackboy too, so it's not exactly all tentpols. We also still don't know the extent of the loss of Japan Studio; which btw wasn't exactly firing on all cylinders let's be honest. We haven't yet seen what will raise out of it with Team ASOBI.

@@awsomeboy360 From a superficial perspective I agree, especially if you look at trailers of their games. Actually playing them is clear that they are not. Marvel's Spider-Man, Uncharted, The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, Ratchet and Clank and God of War are all Third person perspective action games. But "third person perspective" and "action" are basically useless as adjectives because they're so broad terms. Gameplay mechanics and the tones of these games are very different from each other. But I agree, they lack in instantly recognizably different game genres like First person perspective or platformers.

I had PS1 and PS2 when 360 released. I'm not loyal to any Corporation, so I really couldn't decide what to get, 360 or PS3. Neither had any good games (to me) at launch, so I hung on. When Last Guardian was announced, that persuaded me to stick with PS. Never regretted it. If Gamepass comes to PS, I don't think I'd use it - If I didn't want to play those games 3 generations ago, why would I now?

I bought a Xbox in 2022 because I couldn’t get a PS5. I got one in January and sold the Xbox. I think Xbox profited from the fact that the PS5 was so hard to come by. Now that supply has normalised, Xbox sales suffer.

That's viable opinion. The only time I ever considered an Xbox was 360. I had PS1 and PS2 but couldn't decide whether PS3 or 360 would be the way to go. Neither had any good games at launch, so I hung on. A week after Sony announced Last Guardian was in production I bought a PS3! Never regretted my choice.

I've said it many times: The Xbox brand peaked in 2007 with the release of Halo 3. Its decline has been very slow, so slow that you could barely notice it until the launch of XBO. But once the XBO got going it became clear that Halo wasn't what it used to be, Gears wasn't what it used to be, Fable and others weren't getting released at all, and MS simply didn't know how to manage the studios at its disposal. MS buying up all these studios to make games won't help them if they don't have any ability to manage creative talent. This is why Halo Infinite sucked, why RedFall and Starfield were mediocre and forgettable; MS simply has no creative sensibility or idea of what makes a great game. They only know how to market things, how to make something look good on paper.

As a PC gamer, I have zero reasons to buy an Xbox console. Unless I’m missing something, there exist no exclusives for that system. I also tried paying for three months of Gamepass Ultimate and after maybe a week of Flight Simulator fun, I barely touched it till the sub lapsed. MS and Sony also happen to be two of the most evil corporations in the world, basically contributing a lot of the worst anti consumer practices around today. I own all three consoles and I love the Series X hardware, Game Pass, backwards compatibility, Quick Resume etc., but I would still find it pretty difficult to sell an Xbox to somebody else over a PS5, as the latter just has a way more convincing line-up of exclusives. Starfield was a massive disappointment and Forza seems to be a good racing simulator, but with no significant advantages over GT7; which leaves us with Hi-Fi Rush for this year, which was a breath of fresh air for sure, but also kind of forgettable in a year jam-packed with fantastic games like Spider-Man 2, BG3, and FFXVI.

Microsoft has been in the same rut with the Xbox brand since 2013. It's been a decade + of failure. While there were signs of them getting their mojo back with the Xbox One X because they had the strongest hardware and pushed initiatives that gained them fanfare such as the backwards compatibility program (Btw, I don't buy the licensing argument for ending it since they could at the very least continue the 4K enhancement program), I feel like they've lost all of that and general consensus towards the brand has soured even more than when under Don Mattrick. To be entirely honest, I enjoyed Microsoft's exclusive output more under Mattrick than Spencer. Games like Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, the Dead Rising games (Yes, I loved 3 and 4), etc. Xbox needs better leadership. Spencer & Booty, as well as other names, have tarnished the brand.

I would peg it mostly on Kinect but not on Xbone, tho that whole launch did cement the issues. I think the damage started on 360 when Microsoft threw so much of their focus on Kinect and kinda neglected traditional gaming in an effort to chase the Wii audience that was already satisfied, instead of balancing the two groups. I definitely pivoted from playing on 360 to PS3 at the time cos I felt more catered to by Sony with the games coming out. So think the pivot started there for many more than me and the Xbone being the most American-focused console in history with its “TV TV Sports TV” announcement just put most of the world off from considering giving them a second chance (not to mention Microsoft dividing the world into tiers of importance and releasing it at later dates depending on country)

I've noticed the shrinking of shelf space for XBox lately at Best Buy and Target in the States as well. Honestly the largest software allocation of space I've seen at stores is the Switch. I think a lot of this can be attributed to digital sales going up. Microsoft doesn't share sales for XBox so it is hard to say how it is doing here in the USA. I'd like to see those numbers though.

I also noticed that a lot of shops took Xbox games from their shelves here in Germany, I talked about it with a shop assistant and they said Xbox users buy a lot more games digitally or have a Game Pass subscription, whereas Playstation users are still much more often buying physical copies (maybe for their kids?). I’ve been primarily an Xbox guy since it’s release in 2001 to 2020, but the PS4 pro and PS5 completely ended that 20 year run. I was shocked how many hidden gems and titles that were available on PS4/PS5 that Microsoft never bothered to port. One big problem is there is still confusion about the naming process, I'm still shocked at how many people I encounter who still don't get that Xbox One X isn't the Xbox One Series X and the same problem with the S and the Series S. It was the same with the Wii and Wii U. Playstation got it right, people get that the highest number i.e. 5 is the newest. If console manufacturers don't want to use a numbering system then they should probably make sure the name of the previous console is completely different from the successor console.

Xbox 360 gen was definately the PEAK of Xbox for me. Beyond that it was my favorite console gen with PS3 and Wii in the mix too. I say that despite playing the shit out of Halo 2 online, and playing for score in Ninja Gaiden Black, many hundreds of hours in Mission Mode and the campaign. OG Xbox had a few incredible games, but the Xbox 360 and PS3 had so many awesome games it was mind blowing at that time. Some of it was because the technology was really coming together for 3D games and some new series like Dead Space,Gears,Bayonetta got thier start there, but the best games of that gen are still some of my favorites today, like Vanquish. I cant think of a game as well designed as some of those top tier games on any consoles today. Still alot of great games but the visual upgrades are getting smaller and smaller and the main thing left to impress is well designed gameplay and that addictive loop. Only a few games get that right. Biggest shit stain of 7th gen was going through 10 Xbox 360's with that red ring of death, but thats another issue. The current Xbox consoles are trying too hard to blend in with PC's and become indistinguishable. As a result I think its going to make more sense for alot of players to just get a pimped out PC rig, since you get alot more functionality out of a PC, including insane emulation of all consoles and games from the Switch down to the earliest machines.

I wouldn't say Sony didn't do anything outstanding. I used to be a PC player and never owned/used console before, so I went into this world with a completely clean slate. PS apart from obviously IMO better exclusives offers better controllers (haptic triggers), PSVR, multitude of accessories if you want them, cooler design, good smartphone applications and other integrations, standard NVME drives. Even their OS is so much more "inspired" when it comes to design. For me personally Sony crushed Microsoft when it comes to this generation and I had almost nothing to make me look into their platform more. I sometimes think about getting xbox, but there is no point for me - it has almost nothing to offer above what I currently have and I would much rather go Nintendo direction.

Not up to your usual impartiality. A console can be superior hardware wise but without complimentary software it matters naught. Let's not forget Xbox had the original Call of Duty Beta access exclusively, this alone was huge. However statistically, the PS3 sold more units than the Xbox even with the Xbox having almost a 1 year advantage this has been a continuing trend since.

The original Xbox had a plethora of new IP's with huge potential and Microsoft just pissed it all away, Metal Arms: Glitch in the System could of been Xbox's answer to Rachet & Clank, Fusion Frenzy could of been a great consistent party game franchise, Brute Force, Blinx, Crimson Skies, not even including how a complete and utter waste their purchase of Rareware turned out to be. ALL tossed aside for a focus on 3 major franchises with Halo Infinite almost dying to now just staying afloat, GoW is dead in the water and the latest Forza Motorsport blew it's kneecaps out with it's live-service crap.

I’ve always had playstations instead of xboxes until this gen because the ps5 was out of stock for the first 2 or 3 years after release, and im thinking about buying the ps5 pro now when it releases because not only are the exclusives 100x better, but even the cross platform games are better optimised for ps5

I really think Microsoft making their games available day one on pc is migrating more , and more to PC. I know so many friends that used to just game on consoles, now getting gaming PCs, and gaming primarily on them. I know Playstation is now adding their library to pc, but not at launch, usually later on after the title has launched

If I remember correctly, Microsoft only went into the console market because they thought Sony was going to muscle into the PC market. It wouldn’t surprise me if Microsoft gives up on consoles and goes back to concentrating on PC fully again.

Wonder if that margin would be smaller if Sony hadn't driven retailers to a fire sale of the current PS5 in preparation for the "slim" variant? I'm Xbox this generation, but will get a PS5 when it becomes clear whether the "slim" is the only ownership option or the Pro will appear in 2024.

I kind of think this is mostly because of Sony's marketing deal with fifa. Here in the uk alot of us are all football heads and you go to a match and all you see are playstation banners all the way around the stadiums and people associate playstation with the fifa games. And the rest of Europe is similar.

I think when Microsoft made it clear that they want an all cloud and streaming future; many conscious gamers made the decision to stop supporting them. America is a loud minority compared to the rest of the world; which is more traditional in theor approach to gaming. Japan lobes handheld and Japanese supported games; which is why Nintendo is dominating overall, followed by Sony. If the west was the dominant factor of gaming, then we would all be cloud gaming by now and thank goodness that's not the case.

Yeah, Nintendo and Sony have pretty shitty business practices but they do at least have great exclusives that don't sacrifice too much creative integrity. I was really shocked at how much Microsoft monetized Halo. It really hurt the brand on top of the game itself.

I'd argue Sony hardly has a lull right now. Spider-Man 2 was one of the biggest launches of the year; FF7R2 is likely to be smash hit too. Their biggest issues pertain to their long-term strategy (i.e. live services).

Digital Foundry cannot help their XBox bias. A video about XBox sales down 52% (and in some places, more than that - turns into a nostalgia video about how great the “360 era was.” Really weird. Also - to say Sony hasn’t “really done anything special” this gen is just fiction. Better hardware, VR support, the only next gen controllers, better expanded storage solution, and most importantly MUCH better games. Gee maybe that has something to do with it. I bought a Series X a few months ago and I'm pretty happy with it. What attracted me to the console is the backward compatibility. I picked up an old 360 copy of Max Payne 3 for 8 bucks and it's been a great time. Considering last generation I was running a One S and a pretty sad gaming pc, the graphical upgrades to my existing library is really nice too.

Xbox as a brand died with kinect. I was 360 most of that gen and that pivot lost me permanently. I was bought a one but it got no use. That gen I got entrenched with the ps4 for digital library. I WAS briefly interested in the series S as a cheap trade in but with no disc drive I couldnt use my 360 games. Xbox has no games and I would be more inclined to buy a PC than an xbox. They need exclusives and they need a price point lower than the ps5. They need to offer a better product at a cheaper price, anything else and nobody will care.

Soo,i bought and series x in Germany for 399€ on black Friday,habe game pass,first thing i do i downloaded Starfield,start it,see that it runs in 30fps and deleted it immediately. I have an ps5 also,and to me it is a no go when in end of 2023 you don’t have an option to run at 60fps. Then i jumped to play original gears of war and i enjoy it very much 😁👌

Can't speak for rest of the world but in northern England its always been playstation dominates and xbox 360 had a good shot because it was cheaper and played the newest fifa and GTA and honestly i think its that simple for a lot of the world if they announce GTA6 included with a cheap xbox and the advertised it that could be the start
