"I think a lot of people will have a hard time choosing" Nah, I'm going to just bring two specialist. Also I do think the combat hacker is really powerful early game from what I've seen of your LPs. Being able to take control of turrets and the mechs really helps turn the tides.

+MrHibachi I loved Training Roulette with Hidden Potential, and no Strict Screening. Makes for unique soldiers that can have big surprises(such as the Assault, Infantryman or Scout with CCS and Opportunist), not to mention the possibility to get certain perks really early on(Engineer/Scout with Packmaster before Sergeant rank? Yes please!)

Hi! I just wanted to say that you are definitely the best Xcom streamer out there. I am not a great player myself, but I have played my fair share of Long war and you clearly have the tightest play and best game commentary of any streamer I have seen. Thanks for all the great content and I hope you get a lot more viewers with XCom 2. :)

5:34 I didn't know that was how that ability worked. 7:59 I was wondering what would happen in that situation. I am surprised. Ok, Bladestorm just went from "useful vs melee, which might be worth it anyway" to "really, really good". I have to ask: are there any limits on the number of melee reactions per turn? So, if the ranger gets swarmed by chryssalids, do they get a slice on each one? And if one of them then attacks, does the ranger get another slice against the target?
@TemporalElpis
@TemporalElpis 9 жыл бұрын
+PsychadelicoDuck I think it would be 1 per enemy. However at 7:59 bladestorm most likely lagged and should have activated BEFORE getting wrapped around.

+PsychadelicoDuck I can't remember who's LP it was (might have been one of Mr. Odd's advanced missions...?), but it showed Bladestorm triggering multiple times in one round, once per enemy that moved into range. I'm pretty sure that's how Close Combat Specialist worked in EU/EW (obviously shorter range with sword than gun). I think it even triggers if YOU attack someone, and they try to move AWAY from you the next turn!! Can anyone confirm that?

When and what that does for you is a mystery...

I had a thought. Take covering fire and guardian together and combining them with a few other things. First is the Gorilla warfare ability that gives overwatch plus 10 aim and the ability to crit. The you strap on a scope, a repeater, expanded mags, and some venom rounds. The idea is to stack as many extra modifiers onto a single shot to play the odds in your favor. With there being four extra options on an overwatch shot, odds are you will get at least one of them. It could crit, it could poison the enemy, it could insta kill them, or you could get another shot which rolls all the dice again. The best part is that it works for either build without taking away from the core role of the build. I call it the Phantasmal Killer loadout.

Love the info mate. Revival Protocol removes Unconscious from Stun Lancer attacks? OpieOP. Guardian seems kinda meh compared to Shapshooter Kill Zone, going to put most all my ammo upgrades towards that and Suppression. Discharge > Restoration, two heals per turn should be enough, if you need more in one turn you done screwed up, and the ability to destroy groups of robotics without dealing with armour is huge. Something I've noticed watching other people play the pre-release press build, if you take too long turrets will actually regain control and return to the enemy team. Also, you can get a permanent bonus to a characters hacking stat by getting it as a hacking bonus choice, so check every scan tower, terminal, and anything else. Can Aid Protocol bonus stack with itself multiple times? Does Threat Assessment require the target to be in Overwatch to begin with?
@TheRedAzuki
@TheRedAzuki 9 жыл бұрын
+PowernapSystem Guardian can hit the same character twice in a row or even thrice. (low chance but still)
@TheRedAzuki
@TheRedAzuki 9 жыл бұрын
+PowernapSystem But I think the Aid Protocol is limited to 1 person (due to the graphics) and Threat assessment don't need overwatch for the person you target. It just gives that unit Covering Fire OverWatch automatically. So you can run out, try to shoot, if you miss or doesn't kill. Send the Aid protocol (both for defensive reasons and offensive ones) So I find Covering fire worse than TA-Protocol. Also Ever Vigilant seems sort of bad compared to Guardian, mostly cause Ever Vigillant can't be used if you use Aid protocol in the same turn.
@ausaevus
@ausaevus 9 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure Guardian can proc a maximum of 3 times per use. Even if you have more ammo or there are more targets; a hard cap. Either way, you have to give it to Firaxis. A lot of people complained that the support role of the Support class was pretty minimal in EU. Seems like this one is a lot better at supporting your team.
@TemporalElpis
@TemporalElpis 9 жыл бұрын
+Zevvion Well realistically actually hitting the 3rd shot is usually going to a 6% chance or less. Getting a 2nd shot is really nice though, especially if used with covering fire.
@TheRedAzuki
@TheRedAzuki 9 жыл бұрын
+Zevvion If you don't like that, you can just change it in the Ini file. You can chance it to have 100% proc chance and no hard cap.
@SteelsCrow
@SteelsCrow 9 жыл бұрын
This Guardian is worse than Rapid Reaction. I always prefer high (or 100%) chance to get a second shot over small chance to get a 3rd or 4th. Add that the soldier has to actually hit with overwatch - assuming I read it right. After accounting for the soldier's Aim, that 50% is way crappy. Perhaps if Guardian always shot twice, it would be fine. After all this, I would just rather have Sentinel.

One possible mechanic concern with Ever Vigilant is during the concealment phase. The scenario: You are moving your team into position. You have revealed a pod (your team is still in concealment), but you aren't in the position you want yet. You make a blue move with your Specialist and move your other members up as far as you can, but they still aren't quite in the position you want. You want to move up the Specialist, but that will activate Overwatch and you aren't ready to strike. Obviously this won't be a common scenario, but that immediately popped into my mind when I was thinking about how awesome Ever Vigilant is.
@andrewelder2739
@andrewelder2739 9 жыл бұрын
+Phillip Emeritz Overwatch during Concealment is different; it only triggers if Concealment is broken and there is no penalty to Aim. I would think -- since it's the only OW available as an option -- that Ever Vigilant takes the same mechanic into account. They'd be too smart to break an advanced skill every time you use one of their biggest improvement/changes!
@phillipemeritz8385
@phillipemeritz8385 9 жыл бұрын
Oh okay, very awesome. I've only seen people set up overwatches when they attack (as I said, the above scenario would be very infrequent) so I wasn't certain what happened if you left them to patrol while on OW. Dying for this game and I just want to understand everything!

Does the Specialist's Guardian ability trigger stock on missed shots? Also, does putting Threat Assessment on a Specialist with Guardian trigger Guardian when aliens shoot? Because Threat Assessment gives anyone a covering overwatch - fires when aliens move AND when aliens attack. Guardian only triggers when aliens move.

I love how the developers actually put in some abilities, although a little bit modified, from long war. Field medic being the obvious one, doing the exact same thing. On a more important note, I absolutely dig your video's. Our play style, or should I say strategy, is quite similar. I'll probably watch some EW let's plays. Maybe you'd be willing to make some long war let's plays as well? I can imagine you'd rather want to focus on Xcom 2 though, no pressure XD EDIT: Nvm, just found it, I'm just being overly stupid -.-

The thing about ever vigilant though, is wouldn't it mess up ambushes? Like if you used both your moves on moving him behind cover to setup for an ambush, but you didn't want to engage yet, if they were in range wouldn't the skill take over and shoot at the patrol even if you weren't ready?

uh... at 8:05 that gamefreeze happens in XCOM 2 again? In my opinion this class points that's the best case have two spacialists in a squad later in the game. One specialist rather medically oriented the other is "geared" means skilled more combative. While all the other classes do not necessarily need two of the same? Is'nt it? Question: In XCOM EU/W the Support unit often fail hitting a target. Is that by your experience still so in XCOM 2? ps. very good vid, thx a lot Mr. Odd :)

+igimat123 I'm thinking that the Tongue Pull isn't counted as a move by Bladestorm mechanics, and instead it activated in response to Constrict since it counts as an attack within melee range. Additionally, I think the reason Bladestorm didn't activate before Constrict, unlike the time when it preempted that Muton's attack, is because the Ranger can only get into a proper tile position upon being constricted, and that Bladestorm can't activate while the Ranger's position is uncertain.

Does anyone know if Medical Protocol or related heals change the severity of wounds at the end of the mission? Could I heal a gravely wounded solider before the mission terminates so they could remain active?
@CrowMercury
@CrowMercury 9 жыл бұрын
Wow, Combat Medic is so good, but that Combat Protocol takes a nice skill out... I think I would go for your same build, except revival protocol over Haywire since I don't like chances and I don't like panic, but it depends on the capability of the other classes to dish a lot of damages in battle to avoid an Enemy turn. In the original X-COM EW, I'm an obsessive healer, I never go out on a mission without 6 medkits with 2 supports.
@TheRedAzuki
@TheRedAzuki 9 жыл бұрын
+CrowMercury I also fin Revival Protocol to be more useful than Haywire, cause it might not even work and then the payback will be severe.
@CrowMercury
@CrowMercury 9 жыл бұрын
To be honest I'm gonna rethink it once I see all the other classes. I just saw Ranger and they have a much better chance to cut down an overwatch, althogh they need an higher rank to do so. Going full medic seems more and more valid, considering with 2 specialists you will have a crazy amount of heals that saves you ranked soldiers. And to be honest, this is the Support class, In the XCOM EU-EW they were my healers and smoke grenade dispensers, not my killers (but usually I gave them the meld since they had the standard rifle, making Assaults my PSI-troops, Heavy my Mechs, and Snipers my "kill everything with Archangel Armor".
@TheRedAzuki
@TheRedAzuki 9 жыл бұрын
CrowMercury Ranger has no garaunteed way to take out overwatch. Sure they can ignore it, but even melee can miss. Combat Protocol is the only one that will always hit, except for grenades but I think combat protocol has larger range. And it's always good to have more than 1 option. I think I'll have go to squad that's "1 gunslinger (Until I can see the final 3 skills, cause Faceoff is just too good not to use) 1 ranger focused on stealth(Rapid fire has no CD, yes please), 1 demolition Demoman, 1 combat hacker & 1 random focused on what I need for the mission." Since from what I've understood, that if you take damage, regardless if you heal it, they will still have MANY days in the med-bay,so it's better to have such a strong offensive team that you never need to heal yourself.

It's interesting how some options are different and how some are so similar- Captain rank is always giving out a Covering Fire overwatch, either just to the specialist or to another member of the team through Aide Protocol. Major Rank is all about overwatch as well. Also- I wouldn't expect it to, but does Revival Protocol have any impact on mind-controlled allies? Because if it does, we have a game-breaker, 100%.

So I'm thinking, early on, since there is a lack of armour HP, medical protocol will be a bit pointless, you only have a buffer of like 4-5hp. with that in mind i'd go: Combat --> Revival --> Scanning --> Threat assessment --> Vigilant --> Resoration. Ultimate debuff remover and buff adder. Scanning for those times you can't risk phantom ranger recon. Restoration for the group heal on the later, longer missions. Ever vigilant will be great to run into position to prevent a possible flank attack.

Thank you for the video, it's nice to get an idea for what's coming up! Just one question - does using the gremlin count as one move or two moves? I.e. if I don't move and use aid protocol, can I still use the gremlin for something else in the same turn? Thanks, and keep up the great work!

That's a good doctrine Odd, letting your opponents decide your vacation is the last thing you want. Which is don't let anything happen in the first place. Specialist sounds like my cup of tea, it's always better to make more........."friends". ^_^

Does the gremlin protocols stack if you have two specialists?
@Soundaholic92
@Soundaholic92 9 жыл бұрын
Each of the classes can be built so wildly different now, and the different kinds of play style you can make with different team composition is just dizzying to think about. Back in EU/EW I'd more or less have one build for each class I'd always stick to and then it's just a question of which class I bring more of. But XCOM2 looks to be a lot more exciting!
@bloodraven432
@bloodraven432 9 жыл бұрын
I would have two specialists out on the field after upgrading squad size. One for healing, the other for combat. That way I won't have to make the choice between the two skills. Only problem would be if one died then that would not only be a loss of a soldier but a loss of an entire skill tree as well till I got another fully trained.

+bloodraven432 thats all true but later on in Xcom 2 you get to recrut badass veterans that start of at a very high rank at the get go. No longer does all new soldiers have to be rookies the accuracy of a stormtropper :D

Rex1987 Seriously? That quite literally changes everything. I've always had the problem of losing an experienced soldier later in the game and couldn't get a replacement because the enemy kept gunning them down before they could rank up.

Personally feel that a medic is a 'middle ground' kinda person, so his damage output isn't the greatest concern - its making sure all his team mates manage to get home and hacking robotic units. I usually run a medic build, just with haywire protocol. It's pretty much a requirement to have a healer in the harder difficultys.. unless you're running a full psi op build.

+joffrecordan True, but that's not a Skill like on the skill tree. All soldiers can hack, Specialists can just use the Gremlins for it.
@andrewelder2739
@andrewelder2739 9 жыл бұрын
+joffrecordan It does bring up the point that Specialists get the most perks/bonuses outside of their skill tree. At Squaddie, they get a HUGE boost to their Tech skill (before they even commit to a promotion path) and can Hack remotely, along with Aid Protocol (their Squaddie ability).

+bladerj Jake and Garth have stated that the Gremlins are NOT targetable. They are essentially ignored by enemies, and don't even break concealment when you hack observation towers (not sure about hacking MECs/turrets though. Seen conflicting reports).

I'm assuming overwatch shots still carry a penalty. Unless there is an item which grants a perk like opportunist or at least advanced fire control from Enemy Within I have no idea why anyone would take any of the overwatch specific ability in the tree.

+Booster Gold Depends on if you have Training Roulette activated in EW Long War. I have a couple assaults/scouts/infantrymen running CCS and Covering Fire. Ever see a berserker rush an assault(or a scout/infantryman with this combo), and get blasted twice when he wants to punch(once from running in, once from attempting to attack)? Or a Chrysallid, or an alien trying to use a "danger close" ranged attack?
@Jerry-zf3ip
@Jerry-zf3ip 9 жыл бұрын
Ichaerus CCS is the exception because it's at such close range the aim penalty doesn't really matter. For medium/ranged OW shots it's different.
@Ichaerus
@Ichaerus 9 жыл бұрын
I think in XCOM 2, the OW might no longer have a penalty(unless dash is involved, or LoS comes into play). I do like how OW can be negated by dealing damage to the guy doing the OW.
@sanzuriver2959

+Booster Gold Guerrilla Tactics School's upgrade for Specialist boost Overwatch aim and crit rate. Personal combat sims also have ones with aim bonus, and then scope on weapon, etc. There are plenty of way to negate the Overwatch penalty and turns Overwatch on Specialist into a reliable shot. There are also a lot of special ammo this time around to mix things up.
@Spartan12

+Ichaerus I believe from what beaglerush was explaining in one of his new videos overwatch shots still carry a penalty except when fired from concealment which fire at full accuracy.

long range healing thats what i have bin missing in games like this cant w8 to have my hands on it... Bdw does the drone scan reveals faceless ?
@andrewelder2739
@andrewelder2739 9 жыл бұрын
+Shademora I've been wondering that, but I'm betting no. The reason is the descriptions are very specific, and the Battle Scanner specifically states that it "reveals hidden and disguised" enemies, which Scanning penetrates walls and adds range to the Specialist's own vision. I like that they don't simply duplicate the scanner function with this, keeps you having to choose.
@andrewelder2739
@andrewelder2739 9 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Elder Just watched this again to check, and I'm wrong! It DOES reveal Faceless. So it's more like a localized version of the Battle Scanner, but I believe the Scanner does not penetrate walls/cover, so this may be stronger, but of course can't be launched at a distance. Balance!
