Rangers have absurd damage, and they're your stealth troops which lets you use sharpshooters without exposing your soldiers. Now that there are Reapers, I don't know how that changes the game, but Rangers are still fantastic. Nothing beats running up to a Muton and just blowing its head off.

Swords are shit in XCOM2? Dude, they are the fuckin best. They saved my ass so many times, hell, my first XCOM 2 playthrough was won by a desperate sword attack.

Swords are good but shotguns are better. Shotguns do more damage, have really high chance to crit and can flank, can be fired from a distance, can attack from concealment for pretty much 100% chance to crit, can run and gun to shoot further than you can attack with a sword. Swords can do what? attack every turn as opposed to have to reload once every four turns (or more with mods). I mean, they can be useful once every 20 missions but apart from that they are just inferior to a shotgun. Thats why the Long War mod splits the ranger class into a shotgun guy with a secondary long range stun weapon and a stealthy rifle guy with a sword.

I usually go 1 support, 1 grenadier and 4 rangers. Support would be a medic, grenadiers there for AOE and shredding armour but the 4 rangers do all the work. I usually ignore snipers due to the fact they are not as reliable as 4 rangers. Swords in this game are amazing. 100% chance of a hit and insane damage plus the axe that gives you a free ranged attack make them able to wipe an enemy squad in seconds.

If either of you two will read this, auto-loaders on snipers are really good. Snipers take 2 actions to fire, so a free reload keeps the 2 actions

I've now actually played a lot of XCOM 2. Bladestorm on a ranger with a good sword can save your whole team in the right circumstances. Plus, having the option to just run up and whack something comes in handy a lot more than you'd guess.

+1 damage on swords is insane. Swords are, hands down, some of the best god damned weapons in the game.

A Ranger with the Blademaster ability and the one that makes it so they can avoid triggering overwatch shots can devastate an enemy unit single handedly. Blademaster being the one where they react to enemy movements toward and away from them, and is the single best counter to the stun prod using sons of pickles that show up early on. What makes the Sword so good though is the 90-100% accuracy it tends to almost always have, whereas shotgun at it's best trends toward the mid 80s at point blank range. A squad with 2 rangers in it can basically take any of the 3-man patrols and tear them apart in a single turn.

Swords also do more damage to Sectoids who are melee weak. Easiest way to take them out

Lewis is fucking playing like if it was XCOM classic. He moves soldiers out in the open field without any cover what so ever, stacks them up, etc. I mean, jesus christ :D :D
