Xcorps MUSIC SPECIAL EARLY JEWEL 1994 HD -- Early career 1994 video shoot of 20 year old Jewel performing live at a Carlsbad California coffeehouse called The ArtHouse.
Xcorps MUSIC producer and host Jason Lazo opens up this special local flashback segment featuring RARE well lit with good audio - video footage of Jewel gigging a local San Diego coffeehouse and thrilling those - including myself - who happened to be lucky enough to be there seeing what was musically new on the scene!
Shot with a Sony VX-3 pro 3 chip HI-8 camera which was a pretty decent video camera in 1994 though the tape format had issues the lens was pretty sharp!
Xcorps producer and film maker Stu Edmondson was there at The Art House shooting the magic night of local music with a venue that included The Joel Raphael Band, Elizabeth Hummel Band, Gregory Page, Mary Dolan, NurfBall and Jewel.
Stay tuned here on Xcorps MUSIC for a song from each of the artists that appeared that musical night in 1994!
Jewel Kilcher who was born in Utah and grew up in Alaska and moved to San Diego in 1893 performs the song "She Cries" in this video - to a full house audience at The Art House -- a cool freestyle art gallery converted Euro styled house not far from downtown Carlsbad which in 1994 was part of the local San Diego musicians gig tour.
This particular local talent night was promoted by local Carlsbad radio station 95.9 KKOS. Both the Art House and KKOS radio are history now but both played a participating role in Jewels career moves from San Diego on to The World!

I loved reading all the comments that were here before the JRE interview. So great watching this with context, but imagine seeing this and coming back to it again now

Interestingly. I sawa JRE interview with her that he uploaded to youtube about 4 weeks ago (sometime early July 2024). I wonder if that is a new interview or if perhaps he has re-uploaded the interview from 2 years ago? I didn't see any references to dates in the interview i saw.. but he did show a clip from an old performance she did in a coffeehouse from around 1994, which i was also able to find on youtube.

Actually, that's an art venue, which stands out pretty clearly in the video. Here's a yt link that shows Jewel in front the coffee shop but unfortunately doesn't show her playing... kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYvJd6SXqLCobK8

Yeah, this is in Carlsbad. The Innerchange was in Pacific Beach. Sadly, it's now a 2 car garage.

@@SpaceDyeVest - Wow, a 2 car garage... that's too bad. I suppose change is inevitable but given the history one would think the coffee shop would have done well over the years, especially seeing how other aspiring artists may have journeyed there to test their talent. I gotta think too, Jewel maybe would have played there again, once in awhile, for old time sake/nostalgia(?)

Ive binged on jewels catalog over the past 20 years . Love female vocalists.been absolutely mind blown seeing her at a 900 seat casino in Vancouver in maybe ‘08 opening acapella doing somewhere over the rainbow proceeded by a flawless set afterwards, thinking wow , she may not be commercially as successful anymore but she’s at the peak of her talent. I never thought to dig up old coffee shop footage til joe rogan 😊 super cool to live this a little. Seeing that rogan podcast was incredibly inspiring to rise to the challenges she puts in front of herself. Be light in a world dominated by dark. You (we) always win.

I'm glad I watched the JRE/Jewel podcast. At first, I was like what is she doing on there, and then I realized it was to promote mental health, and I remembered I had always been a fan of her music, so I'm in the process of listening to the entire podcast. When I heard about the 1994 coffee house recordings, I had to check them out!

Hi, here after listening to JRE like many of you. I just wanna say, this is a great video. The story she told about how she made it was so heartwarming. I wonder if that kind of shit still happens these days? It seems that people are much too distracted, they have no attention span and everyone is in need of instant gratification....

well now with all the social media sites, and kick starter, go fund me it is easier to get yourself out there. the band Lilliac started on San Monica pier, and the Australian band Mixed Up Everything played a beach near them to build up a fan base and are starting to get noticed. But then you got all the talent shows that get them exposure but want them to sign their life away for a contract.
