My only worry with that is SOPHIE’s label and Atlantic as well. I recall there was an issue with working out a fair deal to release their collabs awhile back but those were rumors. Also, part of me believes Charli’s like reluctance to properly drop the album has been like intensified by losing someone who essentially helped her find herself musically so soon. I do think we will get an official release eventually but later than sooner. This is a work I believe people will continue to talk about as a bemused nugget of pop music history. The way people still talk about the greatest films of all time that were never made.

Tbh Charli is one of the toughest women in the industry. She’s been everywhere: the underground scene, the mainstream charts, and now a niche pop darling. Her career barely 10 years running has consisted of 4 albums, 2 mixtapes, and hundreds if not thousands of demos/covers/unreleased work. XCX5 coming maybe this year is her last contractual album with Atlantic who I believe will drop her lots of cash to retain her services. Songs she’s written for artists (Same Old Love, I Love It, Senorita, future tracks) are worth millions in royalties and revenue. She’s even developed her own mini-label, so she’s truly a one-of-a-kind entrepreneur. When she’s “done”, it’ll be a sad day for the industry.

I will say though, an alarming number of people mourn the loss of XCX World, while continuing to ignore the absolute masterpiece that True Romance is, especially considering how it came before PC Music and Charli finding her sound and people.

I really really love this unreleased record :/ I listen to it almost everyday, especially since the mastered tracks leaked in early 2020. This album just has a consistent sound and flows great from start to finish. The deeper cuts like Die 4, I Wanna Be With U, Can You Hear Me?, Waterfall, Queen Lizzy (even Issues or Our Boyfriend since they were at one point contenders) are almost as strong as the deeper cuts in her self-tited album, Charli.

Planet XCX may or may not be the next album/eras name or some other project she’s working on. She wouldn’t like make merch for it unless she planned to use it in some way. The next album’s rumored to be inspired by Janet Jackson and tradpop in some ways, she’s even wearing blonde wigs and joking about having another “Boom Clap” (not the sound but the poppiness of it.) Who really knows? I’m most sad we didn’t get to hear these tracks on her terms tbh but alas things happen for a reason.

one thing when i look back into xcx world, is that even tho is pop perfection, there's an element as of today that lacks and i'm not even talking about nowdays hyperpop sonics, it's the voice treatment it has, we know that it wasn't finished tho but it sounds as if Charli's voice only has been pitch corrected but no autotune applied which makes the voice not fit into the electronic sonics of the record because there's virtually no metallic robotic effect in her. Still it's a masterpiece and if I remember well, I think the no autotuning it's something Charli mentioned that when working with Sophie she would encorauge Charli to use less autotune and try to emulate it naturally.. Idk, XCX World will remain as a big pop staple and precursor to the hyperpop era we lived and live now, but was meant to be shelved for the right reasons as it being censored and cartoonized by stargate and label's pressures and it being so avant garde for the time..

( And just recently in charli's statement about sophie's death she said she will continue to keep sophie's music alive through her songs)

throwback to a little foreshadowing before your time, but in the mid 90s Juliana Hatfield was signed to Atlantic Records and had completed her 4th album “God’s Foot”, which Juliana was ecstatically proud of and considered her best work. Atlantic not only abruptly dropped her from their label (very common after the initial early 90s indie/alternative surge) but refused to release the record, and since they owned the copyright she wasn’t allowed to play or re-record any of the songs. the slimy scumbag behavior of Atlantic and all other major labels are a tale as old as the music industry itself, but no one ever learns.

Ring and Paris pre-date or were non-SOPHIE productions, I believe there was a time Jack Antonoff himself was gonna steward the 3rd album (they toured together before she yanked herself out to work on her craft and later meet SOPHIE and AG and the PC crowd.) Paris is a banger! Self-titled might not be my fave work of hers personally but I’m so glad we got it and she’s stronger than ever.

The biggest obstacle to its release even years down the line as a archive record is the passing of SOPHIE (rest in power legend) which profoundly affected Charli and all collaborators on this record. Without her guidance to really shepherd the tracks to true completion, it seems unlikely. That being said, I do believe these recordings were just about done or were well into mastering. I just wish we could financially/legally support this masterwork.

I can send the the cover art that went along with it - they came out around the same time and keeps getting flagged and deleted when anyone posts it. The leak had very little to do with it not being released. The label had no faith in the record. When the tracks leaked, Boys had flopped, there was no album or follow up single in sight (what would it have even been? Come To My Party was probably the only contender left and that would have flopped too) and I'm pretty sure she was already recording Pop 2 at the time. In an alternative timeline, maybe we would have gotten an album in 2018 but it would have been a mix of XCX World tracks and the 2018 songs (1999, Focus etc).

Controversial take: I think XCX World wasn't that great. In fact, I even think "Taxi" is only 'just fine.' It's done much more for her as a running joke btw her and her fans (me included) than it would've done as an actual single. There are great moments: the 2018 droplets were salvaged for a reason -- they're great, the "I Wanna Be With You" beat drop is my favorite thing SOPHIE has ever done, and I think "Queen Lizzy" is genuinely sweet fluff. The rest always struck me as her stab at making mainstream mid '10's pop: It's "not so hyper" - pop. They remind me of the half of Number 1 Angel I didn't like. I agree with your take though, I think having this LP shelved prompted her into improving her song-making, and I think she may as well release a mastered version of the leak one of these days (like Jai Paul last year). It beats rough bootlegs floating around online.

I think it was seminal 2010’s pop that probably wouldn’t have made much noise. XCX World was so niche for its time, 2016 itself being an odd period of time where candy coated pop was starting to wane again after a strong resurgence in the early 2010’s period. A release would have been detrimental to her career, I’m glad it was shelved if only to force her to innovate and double down on AG. Stargate are wonderful producers, their work on this record is solid but also was a product of label interference.

I very much liked your analysis of each track, and it was interesting video, but I have to ask this: when you say things like "the closest she's ever come to singing a ballad" or "Charli at her most vulnerable" - have you ever listened to True Romance? Specifically, the song "Set Me Free"? I'd argue that is both the most like a ballad, and the most vulnerable song she's ever done, and in my opinion her best song period. It almost feels like True Romance is a lost album, because it seems like no one ever says a word about, including Charli. Haha. I like the rest of her stuff, but think that album is by far her best work. It's more melodically, harmonically, rhythmically and structurally (song structure) complex than anything else she's done, but is still amazingly catchy, colorful, and listenable. And beautiful, dare I say. And it's by far her best singing. I really sometimes "feel like I'm taking crazy pills" when it comes to that album. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

In the context of 2016-17, it felt like a larger record. Now that we've gotten Charli, HiFN, and Crash... this feels like a closed and shut deleted chapter in her book. I get why Atlantic scrapped it. That Jimmy Kimmel performance more or less proved GP was not for it which sucks but that's just how pop albums live and die.

I made this before she unfortunately passed (which if you told me a year ago when I made this, I would have told you no that’s insane to ever imagine.) I highly doubt any of these recordings will ever be finished or released, Sophie’s estate themselves haven’t even touched any unreleased mastered recordings that were meant for the follow up to OoEPUI.
