Seeing this device running Android 12 is the main reason I love the crowd at XDA and the main reason I prefer buying devices that developers have. Sadly many of the newer developers on XDA have moved to Telegram which seriously undermines the value of the XDA forums as a repository of device/ROM specific knowledge. XDA really needs to fix this fragmentation.
@hydra3693
@hydra3693 2 жыл бұрын
sadly XDA itself stopped being a community where these kind of mods flourished, most of the really good devs left. Also the golden age of the ROM scene is long over. Back then you could pool enough effort and crack open a locked device with a locked bootloader. This doesn't happen anymore, and now you have to pay some shady person or company to use leaked secrets to root it for you.
@DavidDrager

Let's just say I have unlimited power at XDA to make changes to reverse this trend of moving to Telegram. What do you recommend?
@abdul-kabiralegbe5660

@@DavidDrager Okay then. I'd recommend discussing with the developers to know why they prefer Telegram over XDA and addressing those root causes. There has to be a reason why they prefer Telegram. I don't use it so I can't do a side by side comparison. Thanks.

@@DavidDrager @David Drager Maybe bring back DevDB or at least something for organized downloads so people don't have to rummage through pages and dead links (the old KitKat ROM threads are full of dead/removed links because of the devhost disaster and lots of them are lost forever), make threads much easier to traverse, and IDK how could you fix it but lots of device subforums seem polluted and unmoderated. Understandable because of how many they are but in reality what is happening is that in Telegram ROM devs are much freer to work on their own terms, some of them can and do violate the GPL or hold projects hostage, use copyrighted materials and more. also device channels are more centralized

But if you want to play games like roblox or Minecraft, the phone will start heating up and lagging. Roblox is a no-go and Minecraft is somewhat decent, but still very laggy. But for stuff like searching stuff on Google and watching KZbin is very much doable. So overall, the phone is still holding up to this day, unless you don't want it to play new games on it.

I've had my S7+ for a year and it feels new (I spend 15 hrs/week using it). kzbin.infoUgkxLNmVocUk8tnSkwWIlYSNFzWRIaFTBuzS I use it for reading, viewing social media, email, and playing an occasional game. Some 'computers' feel slow and antiquated after a month of use. With the S7+, speed feels as fast as it did when I bought it. Because I don't use apps that are heavy on graphics, I get a respectable 7 hours of battery life before I recharge (I juice back up when I get to 20%). While the S7+ is 3 year old technology, I see no reason to upgrade to a S9+. S7+ is a good value for 99% of what you would use a tablet for.

Ahhh, the Galaxy S3...I remember that one. I had the Triband (aka SPARK) LTE variant that came out two years later, in 2014. (Didn't get it myself until early 2016 since Boost Mobile just couldn't keep it in stock!!) As for the custom ROM scene, it seems that there were just enough differences in the hardware between the regular S3 (d2spr) and the S3 Triband (d2refreshspr) that any ROMs developed or ported for the regular S3 needed to be modified to work on the S3 Triband; as such, the Triband even had to have its own version of TWRP, too!! Anyway, my favorites from that point in time were Oct-L and then Oct-M by Team OctOS (they did an Oct-N, but they didn't have anyone doing dev work for the S3 Triband anymore, so the Triband *specifically* never got Oct-N), and CarbonROM...which went kaput shortly after I had downloaded it in February 2018 (by the time I flashed it in April 2018 and went on that topic in XDA forums, I learned that CarbonROM was already gone). Seems there wasn't that much development for the S3 Triband in the first place. Which is fairly understandable, considering that by the time it initially came out, the Galaxy S5 was the shiny new thing, the S4 was in midlife crisis, and the S3 as a whole was already long in the tooth. And there's LineageOS builds based on Android 12!? Guessing they're for the international models (I747, I think) and none of the US ones (d2vzw, d2tmo, d2att, d2spr, & d2refreshspr)... But, until it was the victim of an unfortunate accident that saw it get broken DESPITE a thick case & screen protector, it managed to serve me fairly well in the time I had it. Can't say that it was my favorite Samsung device, though - that's still the Note8 for me (with the A32 5G a very close second). 😏

7:30 my S3 LTE Exynos model doesn't have a gap, it's bonded with the glass. Yours probably had the glass replaced and glued on just the perimeter. I also notice you have the older Android installed, possibly 4.3 Jellybean, since the 4.4.4 KitKat update changed the notification bar, icons on it, even the battery indicator became white instead of green, and IIRC the basic unlock was a sunshine instead of a ripple. I actually still love TouchWiz and it has features that S8 doesn't have, like I can doubletap and hold to zoom in and out with one finger, or the screen going off when you aren't looking. Also - who was the genius that removed the option to disable charging and low battery red LED indicator in S8? I can do that in S3! It's a really annoying downgrade. And I wish they didn't remove the setting button next to back button. I could still switch between apps with a hold of the home button.

Apple: We have the longest software support! Samsung: I know this isn't official but you will NEVER see someone running external ROMS on an iPhone, so once they lose support, they LOSE support.

Nothing on earth rivals MIUI 5 running on a GS3. Custom Android was so ahead of it's time, we actually ended up losing features many years later rather than gaining.

The glass is actually bonded to the amoled screen, and you can just watch any "galaxy s3 glass only replacement" video to quickly verify this information

To this very day, I don't get why people like the look of the stock Android. I mean, It's improved a lot since ICS days, but IMO it always has been worse looking than the manufacturer's skins.

I still have one. It's currently running lineageos 21 and it's powered by an external battery zip tied to the back of it and directly connected in the place of the oem battery. I actually used it as my daily for a couple of days when I bricked my samsung m12 while trying to flash a gsi rom. I ended up having to re flash the stock firmware on my m12.

While I don't have a Galaxy S3, I'm not interested in the Android 12 upgrade if I can't transfer over the TouchWiz UI, Samsung unique sounds, and all things Samsung. TouchWiz is to S3 as RGB is to a gaming PC: not necessary but great fun to have.

14:46 Misleading. This PIP mode was for the phone's Video app. While it is commonly used to play local storage videos, it can also (at least on my Verizon GS3 running Android 4.4.2) play UPnP/DLNA content from a media server. Given that UPnP/DLNA is closely related to HTTP, I'm sure there's probably a way to stream other non-local videos via some "Share" or "Open with..." dialogue option, although I haven't used it myself with that Videos app (I prefer VLC). With the rise of the video HTML tag usually exposing the video file location, it's not very complicated to play a web video in the most media player apps. IMO Samsung's biggest failing was putting their UI on top of Android: it's not a terrible UI (I turn off touch sounds and haptic feedback immediately on any phone), but it hampered the performance by running on top of an existed stock UI.

Shows you how long these devices COULD last if everyone didnt invest into consumerism and manufactures weren't profit driven. This phone could of easily gotten updated to Android 10 before support was ended.

And the funny ting is that Samsung said that they couldn't update there phone longer than 2 years because they where not fast enough this show that it just was not true what Samsung was saying and this video shows that Samsung galaxy Phones can be update whey longer than Samsung says and why is Samsung updating there phones for 4 years now and not back than

Apple did not really revolutionise the smart phone market anywhere near as much as people claim.. They just launched a phone that basicly did exactly what we already had for some time alrady. Except the iPhone actually had a few less features like the basic MMS feature etc. I litteraly laughed at the iPhone when it launched. Reminded me of a mix og other snart phone OS with just another cheap design. iPhone was a huge downgrade to atleast the iPhone 4 came out. Than they finally slightly started to be comparable but was still beaten in most ways.

Even tho the S3 was in many ways better and more popular than its predecessor, I never felt the need to upgrade to it from my old, trusty, almost as powerful and also equally customizable galaxy S2. I only got to use one for a while because my S2 was robbed, otherwise I'd probably never have tried it in my life (I actually upgraded briefly to a S4, then settled down with an S5 for a good while, jumped to an S7 for about three years, ditched it for a S10+, then gave it to my gf because now I'm writing this from my S22 Ultra).

The glass was definitely bonded to the screen, or else the glass would be easily replaceable. A lot of people replace it and only glue the perimeter instead of bonding it to the OLED with LOCA, so yours might have already gotten that treatment

Wi-Fi direct was the best feature. A lot of people didn't know about it, but with the boys in my class we used to always share files. I would share pirated game APKs and I would get movies or other stuff. Way better than bluetooth, and What'sApp still sucks at transfering large files. I never understood the hate, I always thought the Samsung UI looked the best, especially compared to the old stock android.
