I never realized until now that The Hand is very obviously inspired by an umpire with the bulky blue pads. Like yeah, the stand whose entire identity and power centers on its right hand would be modeled after a profession that uses its right hand primarily.

Something important to keep in mind when it comes to character desings in JoJo's is that the creator Hirohiko Araki has stated that there isn't really a 'correct' or canon color scheme for anything (unless a color is directly mentioned in universe, such as eye/hair color). I personally really enjoy this idea because it really does allow the reader to imagine characters in many different ways. You could even recolor pictures of the stands yourself to create more pelasing color combinations, and this idea leads to a lot of creative and interesting art with different interpertations of the characters

Tusk Act 1: Can shoot spinning nails. Just a normal gun really. Tusk Act 2: Spinning nails which can create holes that chase it's enemies and tear them apart like black holes. Tusk Act 3: Spinning nails that can create a super teeny tiny spinning hole. Johnny can shoot himself and suck himself into that hole. He can move the hole anywhere he wants and than pop out of it. Tusk Act 4: The physical embodiment of infinite spin. If the stand touches you, you're basically given an infiinte amount of spin energy. This rips your body apart by causing every single thing in your body to spin. If you try to leave the exact place where you got hit, you will be sucked back to that exact area.

32:51 What I love most about Tusk as a stand is how it relates to Johnny as a character because since Johnny is a paraplegic, the first forms of Tusk start out without humanoid legs but as the stand evolves alongside Johnny it develops legs until it finally has very humanoid legs as act 4. I also just love how it relates to Johnny's design with act 4 having a golden horseshoe on it's head like how Johnny has a horseshoe on his hat and just the overall star motif is really cool.

39:24 I think I get what you're referring here. I can't name specific ones but the genre is called "tokusatsu" which translates to "special effects show". More specifically the Kamen Rider series where a lot of their costumes feature horn-like crest on their forehead. They are the sibling franchise of the Super Sentai series where Power Rangers get their costumes and a lot of footages from. What's interesting is Araki's avant-garde design philosophies has probably impacted a lot of the suit designs more than people think. As JoJo has become more mainstream lately, the suit design for Kamen Rider has been utilizing bolder color combinations and more creative pieces as part of the armor.

xForts pointed out in his analysis on Pucci and Weather report a notable contrast between their designs and their stands designs. As you already mentioned, Weather report has a heavenly feeling to it which works well with its weather manipulation ability. Meanwhile, Whitesnake has the acronym for the four bases of DNA, ACGT, all over him. Combined with his ability to store things onto disc, it really gives Whitesnake a Techno/Scientific feeling. However both characters share a motif in that their designs are opposite of their stand. Weather report is a prisoner that wears a hat with small horns on it, sort of like small devil horns you'd see on costumes, While Pucci is a priest and wears the outfit fitting of one.

The World, Highway Star, Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, Soft & Wet and Paisley Park are peak stand designs to me. The World is particularly awesome with the 'Sand' color palette from the Medicos Super Action Statue line, I've always wanted to get that figure and the desaturated color palette works so nicely in my opinion

Most of these have a deeper relationship with the music they are based on, simple examples like the Speed King tie that the highway star guy has that is a reference to another song from deep purple, or the design of King Crimson, being a reference to the cover art of In The Court of The Crimson King, a lot of stands/users have those design cues that might be easy to overlook

Araki creates all the characters in black and white for the manga and a separate company colors them in without Arakis input. Many fans prefer to read the original manga without color because they think the coloring team didn’t do a good job/dont agree with the colors chosen. I’m curious on your take of the characters who you like the design of but not the colors. I love your input on jojo fashion and would love to see more! ❤

10:40 i glad you mentioned Cenobites in this bit, araki's original sketches in the manga for part 5's villain stands were meant to be more demonic than usual. Assumedly he didn't go through with it because he was in a rough patch and his editors advised him not to keep the designs, but they were different enough that the face sketches could have changed how the entire stand looks and maybe that would affect how the user looks Its a pretty obscure tidbit, but you'd likely find the orignal sketches online through the manga itself and theres loads of free resources out there if you cant find or afford to buy the manga

Magician's Red looking like a chicken is quite amusing- the Egyptian God Horus was depicted with a Falcon's head, and I feel like a Falcon's black feathers could have been hinted at in Magician's Red by maybe making it look like his head is wreathed in black smoke. I feel like shrinking the beak and not making the head so red might free it from the "chicken" design... but then again, sometimes an artist has a lot of strengths, but just can't draw an anthropomorphized animal-man without making it look cartoony, and maybe that's just a weakness Araki has that he can't get around.

It sounds like there is an alternate version of egyptian gods that the design is based on and looks more like. So that might explain why the heads is that way specifically - but yeah, still not a fan. I think your suggestions would help

With regard to Kiss, I don't think its outfit ressembles per se anything from The Cell, BUT I see where you're coming from and somehow I feel like its face/ eyebrows kinda remind me of Vincent D'Onofrio. Magician's Red (and Babyface as well) design wise are based off of characters from The Carnival of Immortals by Enki Bilal. The story is about a group of aliens that look like Egyptian gods who need fuel to leave earth, but the government won't give it to them. Horus, one of the aliens and the one who looks like MR, leaves the ship and possesses the body of the main character. Some panels of him possessing look like the stands in the manga.

@@XDF also, idk if you’ve read the part, but it’s one of THE COOLEST abilities for a stand ever. It’s able to map out and send Yasuho options that may lead her out of a dangerous situation. For example, if she’s being chased and comes to a dead end with a dumpster and a fire escape ladder, it might present her with two options on her smartphone saying “ladder” and “dumpster”. Whichever one Yasuho chooses, it will help her in some way, although perhaps not how she expects. For the “dumpster” option, it might turn out to be empty, and she can jump inside to hide. For “ladder” it could weaken the clasp holding the ladder in place causing it to fall on the head of her attacker as they approach her. Overall, it’s really cool, and it’s similar to Spice Girl in the way that a lot of the misfortune Yasuho finds herself in is as a result of not selecting a choice and disobeying her stand.

Spoilers for part 8 but if we're talking about coordination, it's worth mentioning Soft & Wet's eyes being divided down the middles and how that matches Josuke8, as well as the division down the middle of the face resembling his buck teeth and just representing who he is. For part 7, all the dangly bits on Tusk ACT 4, resemble Johnny's finger nails since he uses them as projectiles, and not that Araki has anything to do with the official manga color palettes but Funny's stand matches Johnny, while Johnny's matches Funny. The symbol of a rabbit as Funny's stand is really interesting too when you consider the history of rabbit symbolism and how it relates to Paganism and Christianity, a core trait of who funny is and what he represents. Even the little details like baseball stitching and a face mask censoring his speech, can represent different parts of Funny's identity.

I like that red hot chilly pepper is really expressive as Akira uses it to talk to people yet the design is something that usually wouldnt be expressive? Like beaks dont move like lips do, if you made a Stand that the user can use to talk to people you'd think giving it a humanoid face would be the way to go so its really interesting that Araki did the complete opposite of that. (It is pretty ugly tho)

Hi XDF, loved the video. Just wanted to say that when you talk about the manga colours they're not really the real manga colours. Jojo is originally drawn in black and white and then other people that are not Araki release the coloured scans. The only time when Araki draws in color is for promotional art and he never truly commits to a colour pallete (you'll see if you look at the same character but in different art pieces). Cheers!

Initially included it, but it got removed in the second wave of cuts. Too much/many coat and arrows. 🤷🏽‍♂️

I don't know if this was already brought up or if you already know, but Green Day (Cioccolata's stand) has a different design in the part 5 ps2 game, where its lower body is more like a long dress... I honestly wish they kept it in the anime, it's just so much more unique. A total icon
