They're a rock band, under a kpop company, and working the kpop industry and under their rules. Calling them idols is fine.

They are considered both K-Pop idols and a K-Rock band. They've made songs in many different sub-genres of rock, so while this song is very pop-punk, they have other songs that are other genres (ex. hard rock). So I just refer to them as an idol band! I super recommend their new album! They have a live performance of the song “No Matter” on their KZbin channel and my personal favorite song is “Money On My Mind”, although sadly there is no video or performance video for the song. Speaking of live: They are amazing live! Great vocalists and amazing energy. (4/6 members sing in their songs most of the time. The lead guitarist and drummer do occasionally as well.) Also, whenever you watch anything Korean, check for subtitles. Most music videos should have them at least, but some performance videos and such might not. I personally absolutely adore the lyrics of this song. The members, and the lead guitarist in particular, wrote them to comfort the small, lonely, and struggling. He said he wrote them when he was at a really low point and he had a friend that was also at a low point, and these are the words he wanted to tell them. The song itself is quite upbeat because it's meant to be hopeful. Here are their stage names, real names, roles, and birth years: Gunil - drums, leader, 1998 Jungsu - keyboard, main vocal, 2001 Gaon (Jiseok) - rhythm guitar, vocal, rap, 2002 O.de (Seungmin) - synthesizer, vocal, rap, 2002 Jun Han (Hyeongjun) - lead guitar, 2002 Jooyeon - bass, main vocal, maknae, 2002 _(real names in parenthesis. if there are no parenthesis, their stage name is their real name. “Gaon” is pronounced like “gown”. “O.de” is pronounced as one syllable, ignore the dot. “maknae” is a korean word that means “youngest of a group”.)_

They just released the live performance video of money in my mind and it was so good. I hope they release a vid of moneyball too. I prefer their live performances over the studio versions for some reason.

Xdinary Heroes have a zero skip discography. They're such a talented group and don't hesitate to explore different sounds. I highly recommend more of their music - Money Ball, Pluto, Strawberry Cake, Man in a Box, Good Enough, and Happy Death Day are all incredible and are a great place to start. If you're interested in more Kbands, here are two more of my personal favorites with some recommendations: The Rose - a little more indie alternative but they've had a heavier sound lately. Their lead vocalists are so incredibly talented, especially Woosung with his raspy, warbly tone. They're another group with a zero skip discography but here are some I'd recommend: Take Me Down, Red, Baby, Sour, The definition of ugly is, Back to Me, and Alive. ONEWE - also indie alternative who are severely underrated. I would go so far as to say their lead vocalist, Yonghoon, is one of the best vocalists in Kpop right now. Tracks to check out: AuRoRa, Rain to Be, Parting, Shoot It Out, and Veronica. I've only recently discovered them and find myself listing to Rain to Be almost daily, it's so good. Enjoy this musical adventure and thank you to reacting to our boys! You've got yourself a new follower.

I love Break the brake and Aurora. And I feel like Strangers from The Rose is such a haunting song. (I love all 3 bands and I enjoy Day6 as well tho they're much more light). Woodz also has some nice songs, I love Amnesia. I'm a die hard Metallica fan, btw 😅

Some people prefer to call them krock, but I prefer to call them kpop because I don’t think of kpop as a genre. Kpop to me is Korean idol music and Xdinary Heroes are promoted as idols. To differentiate them from kpop’s idol dance groups, I refer to them as kbands alongside bands that aren’t promoted as idols. To explain what I mean in simpler terms: Day6 and Xdinary Heroes are kpop, The Rose used to be kpop before they went indie, and Thornapple and Nell aren’t kpop. All of them are kbands. Idol bands are the most recognizable to international kpop fans, so they tend to be at the forefront of most recs. Nevertheless, idol band or not, kbands are an extremely underrated part of Korean music despite consistently coming out with high-quality music.

xdinary heroes have quite a few songs you'd probably like - i'd recommend checking out the whole album, but if you're only going to do a few songs i would say definitely listen to moneyball (nu metal influences) and money on my mind (late 70s-80s rock influences). they also have some covers that you would probably fuck with - they've covered both welcome to the black parade and bring me the horizon - drown if you wanted to check those out! for another k-rock band, i would recommend rolling quartz - they're a 5 member all girls band formed in 2019, i would say check out either fearless or stand up. for something less rock and more pop i would recommend lucy! they have a violinist in place of a lead guitarist and a drummer that sings (also, their bassist plays a 6 string 90% of the time) - i would go for either boogie man or one of these 2 live clips ( the knight who can't die and the silk cradle - kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZ-lhJyoltVnqbssi=ISgpeA7DD1JHeRGN, or hot! kzbin.info/www/bejne/epyscoibnbNmj5osi=MRsi_W67LarXv6jx)

You should definitely check out more of their discography, might be because i'm biased but i actually like every song from them no joke, some of my favorites are money on my mind, paint it, dear h., dreaming girl and basically the whole troubleshooting album but ofc listen to what you want. Also if you want to check out more, you can try their seniors day6, they're also a krock band under the same company as xdinary heroes, some bangers from them are for example Shoot me or Sweet chaos.

the top comment has pretty much everything i wanted to say, but i'll guess reinforce their recommendations and add mine! from the new album, the live clip of no matter is really good and so is money on my mind or moneyball. from past releases, i really enjoy bicycle and break the brake. they both have live clips, but break the brake also has an official music video too!! thanks for reacting to them, i enjoyed seeing you smile over them. edit: my suggestions may be biased since my favorite member is junhan who frequently has guitar solos. i just realized that almost all my suggestions had cool guitar work by him.

Hell yeah, I love how much fun you have w/ it! I too grew up w/ pop-punk and pop-rock, then was a full on metalhead for many years, and then I sort of replaced all my listening with podcasts and audio books. Last year I fell down a kpop rabbit hole with Stray Kids, TXT, Ateez, and OnlyOneOf, and eventually via Stray Kids I found Xdinary Heroes bc they're from the same company. Just like you, their music scratched this deeeply nostalgic itch I didn't even know I had. Some more XH song and cover recommendations that I'm pretty sure will continue to scratch that itch, and also some required listening just to get to know their sound: 1st EP Hello World: Happy Death Day (their debut song), Strawberry Cake 2nd EP Overload: Hair Cut, Crack In The Mirror 3rd EP Deadlock: Bicycle, Freakin Bad 4th EP Livelock: Break The Break, Pluto, Again? Again! Single: Wego Wego 1st full album Troubleshooting: Moneyball, No Matter, Night Of The Fireworks Good Enough, Dear H, Paranoid, Until The End Of Time, Dreaming Girl (these are all their slower/sadder songs, make yourself a crying playlist lol) (cover) Tomboy orig by G-Idle (cover) Drown orig by Bring Me The Horizon (cover) Welcome To The Black Parade orig by My Chemical Romance As far as what to call them, I think it helps to think of kpop not as a genre but as an industry for idol music. There can actually a bunch of different genres within kpop music, so what really defines it is the whole idol culture of it, i.e the variety shows and lightsticks and marketing the personalities of the performers as much as the music. Korea also has plenty of regular bands who will function and perform in a way that's much more familiar to fans of western bands. Tho from what I understand rock and metal never really took off in Korea the way that it did in other places like Japan, so rock bands are a thing but they rarely reach the level of popularity that idol groups do. Then there are bands like XH that sort of walk in both worlds, that are treated like idols in a lot of ways (signed to a kpop company, they have a lightstick, do a bunch of variety content, they perform at music shows w/ all the idol groups, etc) but they also have live performance skills that idol groups typically don't and their music can definitely be influenced by kpop but still mostly stands out from what is produced for idol groups. It's a tough gray area to be in yet a handful of groups have managed to make it work. Tho imo none of them have gotten as much success as their level of talent actually deserves. So to actually answer your question, I think idol band or kpop band is what they're often called within Korea but I tend to prefer to think of them as a kband, sort of borrowing the abreviation style of "kpop" but emphasizing the band description. Expecially w/ this newest album Troubleshooting they've really established themselves as a rock band rather than a band that plays kpop w/ instruments. If you wanna delve more into kbands, here are a few to look into: The Rose, Day 6, Lucy, Loren, Touched, Kardi, Onewe, Rolling Quartz, Cloudian, CN Blue Some kpop recs with punk/rock/metal influences: TXT - Loser Lover, 0x1 Lovesong, Growing Pains Ateez - Guerilla, Cyperpunk, Wonderland Woodz - Drowning, Ready to Fight, Amnesia Cravity - Love or Die ONF - Bye My Monster Dreamcatcher - honestly basically anything in their discography bc they're like if Nightwish was a kpop girl group, but I'm partial to Scream and Boca Just B - Medusa Le Sserafim - No Celestial New Jeans, League of Legends - GODS Oneus - Valkyrie, Luna Xikers - Rockstar, Koong, Do or Die

Some extra fun facts about XH bc I have long since lost the battle with insomnia: - the drummer Gunil is the leader and he actually moved to the US w/ his family in middle school so he spent his teenage years here and thus is fluent in English (tho all the members speak at least basic English). He went to Berklee College of Music to major in drumming, but didn't finish bc JYP scouted him via his drum covers on KZbin (which sadly have all since been privated). - Gaon, who's on rhythm guitar as well as singing and rapping, was a big fan of Gunil's videos so when they met as trainees he felt like he was already meeting a celebrity. Adorable. - the 2 on keyboards, Jungsu and Ode, both originally auditioned and trained to be idols, taking dance and singing lessons for a year before being asked to switch to the band project that became XH. - Jooyeon, main vocalist and bass, originally auditioned for jyp without telling his parents and when he passed they told him no at first, and a producer had to come convince them to let him become a trainee bc he was so talented. - Junhan is the only member who doesn't really sing, as well as the only true introvert, but he speaks very loudly with his guitar and if you hear a sick riff or guitar solo in any of their songs then he's always responsible for it.
