Correct or not, the actions of the Romans, historically speaking and tactically speaking, are good to a certain extent. The Romans did not fight hand-to-hand unless they had no choice, and by habit they were less powerful than when they fought in formation. The greatest victories over the Romans were achieved by all those who could outflank them and force them to fight hand to hand.
