See one of the things that always gets me odd about Orks in 40k, is they don't hate humans, they often seem to actively really like them. Sometimes they even seem like they feel they are doing humans a favor by starting a big fight with them. This can sometimes be even more true if those humans are Astartes. What I love here is the Blood Axe Ork feels like he actually is trying to help in his own way. like he is trying to say "Hey, your life would be better living this way, im sure you would love it if you tried it, so I'm gonna try to teach you why you should try it and how to try it" Like he really seems like whoever he was talking to he wanted them to go out and enjoy and Ork like way of life. And that hits odd, cause while yes a Ork way of life is terrifying for most humans, it is such a different feel to have a foe who thinks they are helping you.

I suppose I drifted away from my "once a week" schedule for a while but this text lives rent free in my head whether I'm actively consuming it or not so I was always bound to return and see it. I'm sincerely glad you thought well of my message. Having that kind of author-reader sympathy is usually something you just have to hope for. I know it seems a bit silly, but I really do think very highly of this work and for many reasons! I think its a great little meditation on what it means to be human (orks are nothing if not human, after all), I think it is the best example of diagetic "ork thinking" in the entire 40k universe, even if it is not strictly canonical, and I just plain like the prose! It makes me laugh! Its funny! As an aside my head cannon for this is that this particular ork observed humans a few times in a non-combat, non-adversarial context and it woke the part of the "Akashic Record" in his DNA that stores all the anthropological and sociological instruments and methodologies of the old ones. Anyway, what dragged me back to this piece this time is that with 40K in the mainstream(ish) zeitgeist right now following the success of Space Marine II, I've born witness to some of the dumbest and most banal discourse I've ever seen despite decades in this fandom. I've even had my part in relitigating some of the oldest, most boring corpses of arguments like whether the Imperium is bad and if its ok to like them anyway. In all that I needed a reminder of the quality of content this setting can yield despite all its endemic problems and this was, naturally (to me anyway), the first thing I thought of when I needed that.

The idea of the orks as a weapon _system_ is intriguing, and at first blush one might wonder why not machines.. but the answer is obvious, it's been done (men of iron) and didn't end well. Perhaps the idea of a biological weapon system is that it's *imperfect* and subject to long-term degradation.

The Old Ones absolutely LOVED tinkering with biology and warpcraft. Remember, the entire Webway is their design, and there are several other species with their fingerprints all over them. The recent Ghazghkull Thraka novel kind of clarifies this as well. When a spoilery thing happens that I won’t mention effects the Gestalt field negatively, It effects Ork tech, but it doesn’t just literally stop working all together like it’s made out of scrap. Vehicles (presumably those painted red) don’t move as fast, Ork guns run out of ammo faster then the Orks THINK they should, etc. Orks can 100% build functional technology. Much of which is even more advanced then that of other races in the galaxy

Yeah, people tend to waaaaaaay overestimate the effect psykers can have outside the Warp: the Materium doesn't like people overly playing with the laws of physics, so if the Orks had anywhere near the ability to affect reality that most people believe they do, there should also be an immense amount of psychic phenomena (IE, Perils of the Warp,) around every Waaagh! which we just don't see. Sure, an Ork can make something go slightly faster by painting it red, but if enough of the engine explodes, it's not going to budge no matter how much the Orks want it to.

@Dap1ssmonk2 жыл бұрын
I think the truth is a middle ground to both ideas. Orks do think things into existence, but they still have to BELIEVE it works. The ork believes it works because it has all the major parts of a gun, so the waagh field irons out that none of the parts really fit together. It’s like having an amateur make a fire arm with proper tools but no training. They can probably make a thing that will detonate a cartridge at least once. The status of the user or the tool afterwards is probably not going to be good though. For orks however, their field nullifies the “rough edges” of their tech, and so it works. Ork guns aren’t just gun shaped scrap. They have magazines, barrels, recoil systems, blocks, etc. these parts aren’t well made, but the field makes sure this tech still works most of the time. I guess in short: orks aren’t stupid enough to think a gun shaped like scrap works, or to think they can think tanks into existence, but they are stupid enough to not notice their “equipment” is barely held together and should detonate given the slightest chance, so it doesn’t detonate.

I do not play or really engage with wh or 40k, but I know bits and pieces from friends who do. But I was absolutely absorbed by this. Thanks for randomly showing up on my feed- I have a feeling I’ll be binging your stuff later. Diegetic storytelling is an under-utilized medium.

Does the character you play in these videos know of the war of the beast yet? Feel like alot of his questions could be answered or atleast be given more info to posit theories when learning of that event 🤔.

There is also the result of humans being in contact for extended periods of time, (as in combat and other conditions,) with the "Waagh Effect." These groups become "Orky." The most well know are the "Diggers" from "GorkaMorka." There is also the titan legion Legio Destructor. After being in combat with orks for what can only be said to be "Too Long," the Legio Destructor adopted the battle cry "big death, Big Death, BIG DEATH!"

@@saulwright5663 No pretensions of high gothic, no triumphant trumpets or outmoded banners. Hmm.... add electric guitar riffs, some pyrotechnics....

One might even wonder if this evolution speculated on has happened before, during the War with The Beast, or if not then an entirely different evolution of a set of Orks.

An Ork is objectively one of the best things you can be in the 40k universe. Only things that are close would be pre-Gobli-Throne Big E, the entire Tyranid hive mind as a whole, and Trazyn the Infinite.

Totally off topic but i like everything about Coriel Seth. Such a great character. One quote from her that i found to be quite prophetic in regards to our own universe says: It is to my deepest regret that we live in an age where we are proud of machines that think and deeply suspicious of people who try to.

Reflecting on how Kroks are the lost higher potential hypothesized in the video would be pretty damn cool. Thought the "Knight Sized Orks" was a lame revelation from the books...

20:27 "Since the disappearence of the progenitor species, long before humanity evolved" this right here is the biggest cronological problem I fail to grasp in 40k... Where was humanity during the 'war on heaven'? Were we hunter gatherers tring to survive an agressive world? Were we still monkeys running on trees? A story I've heard says that the normal human already existed and could somewhat grasp to the void, and some individuals (shamans) were fully aware that the heavens burned above them.
@leaguesmanoframsgate2 жыл бұрын
The War in Heaven was sixty million years ago, so just after the dinosaurs died out. Humanity did not exist on Earth (the best mammalian life could manage was a sort of ancient shrew), and has existed for a comparatively paltry two hundred thousand years in the setting of 40k. However, lore isn't static, and what you read may have been canon at the time it was written. It just isn't any more, and that's fine.
