Take it from someone who has reacted to all the XFM episodes already: it will change your life. You will obssess over lines these guys said over 20 years ago, repeating them in your mind over and over again as if some virus burrowed into it. You will find yourself responding with an XFM line in many day-to-day situations. You will end up making these episodes the highlight of your day. And most importantly, you will discover the actual Karl Pilkington. Enjoy!

Karl slowly but surely becomes more and more prominent as the show goes on. Since he was just their producer at the time he originally was very much in the background of the shows, occasionally chiming in when their attention was directed to him. By the time the second season comes around, Karl is pretty much fully integrated into the show and becomes like the Karl we know in the podcasts and tv shows. It's going to be great watching you see the origins knowing the context of where he is now
@SaintPhoenixx Жыл бұрын
Yeah he definitely starts out timid, only popping up with the odd comment, but he really grows into it. By the second season, it's the Karl show.

@@SaintPhoenixx Timid? With Steve being the one who's sad and lonely and worrying about growing old alone? I guess timid in that he doesn't take part in every link, but he is just the producer at this point. He's there to make the talent look good. I've listened to these while sleeping for a couple of years so I pretty much know every episode by heart but don't really remember which episode is which. I forgot he actually went this hard on Steve in the very first episode! Just goes to show that celebrities don't impress him much.

This was a pleasant surprise. I had only listened to the compilation versions of the XFM shows. I never thought about these fuller versions. Hearing the first show on Mandy’s channel was a great beginning. I’m going to keep watching. To have the context like this really adds to my enjoyment. It’s fascinating to hear the story gradually unfolding. Parts of what’s being said here will appears later in the Ricky Gervais show podcasts. Now we know where Steve and Ricky first learnt a story or two. At the moment, Ricky and Steve are just winding each other up - they are yet to band together and go after Karl. They are not aware yet that behind the glass, controlling the faders, is unexplored magic.

It's great that you've started with the XFM shows - I still think it's the best stuff the three of them did together, and you get the best of Karl 'unfiltered'. S1 is good but takes a while to get into its stride as Karl comes out of his shell and Ricky and Steve realise what they've discovered and start making best use of him. The first half of S2 is absolute gold. What the internet now knows as 'S1 E1' isn't actually the first episode - it's the first of the ones that have survived. Ricky and Steve came back to XFM in September 2001, so there are 6-8 lost episodes, which would also include their very first on-air interactions with Karl. Even this 'Episode 1' is incomplete - hence why it's less than 20 minutes long. The recording starts halfway through the show. The rest are about an hour long. All the XFM episodes now on various places on the internet were originally recorded off the radio by fans and distributed online (although I think the S4 ones were put up on the XFM website), so it's not a complete set and some of the episodes are incomplete. The XFM shows are really nostalgic for me. I didn't live in London so couldn't listen to them on the radio but my best friend from school had Sky TV which could also get XFM, and one Saturday afternoon I was round his house and he said "you've got to listen to this - it's Ricky Gervais from The Office and the guy he wrote that with doing a radio show and their producer is mental." I can still remember the first episode I heard; it was the one from S2 when Ricky is still drunk from the night before at the start of the show and Karl told the story about The Shadow That Pushed People Off Their Bikes. Such a brilliant introduction! We tried to listen every week from then on and managed to do so right up until Christmas.
