@TheKninpeaks11 ай бұрын
This memory management is great, but you have to keep track of the memory presets externally (spreadsheet or notebook) in order not to duplicate or overwrite existing presets. I also like the PL-330 approach, where you just hit the memory button and it just sets the next free preset, plus the sort and delete duplicates function. As others have said, to have a combination of both would be fantastic!

@SeventiesVet Жыл бұрын
Very nice explanation. I actually prefer memory scrolling via the tuning knob as with my R108. Especially with Air bands, it's convenient to quickly find active communication without having to individually press each memory in sequence. On the other hand, this becomes impractical with a large number of memories in storage. It would be nice to have both features!
@M6RDPadam Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting difference between the R108 and the D808. The XHDATA D-D808 would lend itself to that type of scrolling through memories with the tuning knob as it is a nice clicking type knob. Thanks for the comment. It's always nice to chat to people around the world about hobby stuff!

that's a very good question and the short answer is no. This is because every single channel already arrives with something stored in it. So straight out of the box if you go to page 0 and channel 1, a frequency will already be in there and each subsequent channel. On a scanner this would be disastrous! But because the 808 does not scan it doesn't seem to present any problems, at least not to me. With the Tecsun PL660 which I also have and use a lot for scanning through the shortwave memories, fortunately you can delete stored frequencies. Hope this helps. 73 Adam

What I find very annoying is that the memory number disappears a few seconds after you've chosen it. You can check which page number you're on by pressing the page button but there's nothing to check which of the 0 to 9 memory locations you're listening to.
@M6RDPadam28 күн бұрын
Yes I find you never know if you're on memory 1, memory 11, 21, 31. Yet when it comes down to an affordable portable that's kind of does everything pretty well in one box, the 808 is always the radio I find myself packing for a day trip or holiday. I guess it's why us radio buffs have so many different radios as I find you really do need different ones at different times. If I am chasing weak DX arrow signals from South America early in the morning then nothing will beat my Tecsun PL660. I turn to the same radio if I want to scan through a few utility frequencies looking for activity (I don't know of another portable that does that quite as well). But it sucks on airband where the D808 shines from a shortwave portable. And sometimes you just can't beat a good old analogue portable for it's better quality and AGC handling. It's a great hobby!!

Any help I appreciate. Have a nice.
@M6RDPadam2 жыл бұрын
Hi Valmir, I'm no expert but it sounds as though you might have an issue with the control that operates both the fast and slow tuning options and the squelch. After you switch the radio on, what happens if you PRESS IN the tuning dial on the right hand side of the radio next to the on off switch? A slow press of this dial will toggle you through "fast" "slow" and "stop". A 3-second press will allow you to set the squelch level for air band. If after experimenting with that dial you still have no success there is a reset hole on the base of the radio that you can press with a paperclip although I have never needed to do this myself. I hope you figure out the problem but if you need more help my email is on qrz..com 73 GL Adam

What happens if you want to tune through ALL of the stored channels in every ‘bank/page’?. Can you just keep pressing the Up/Down, or when you reach channel position 9 do you have to keep pressing the ‘bank/page’ for the next page?
@M6RDPadam3 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes that's right when you get to channel 9 you have to press the page button, then the number of the page you want to go to. It's clear from comments that some people hate the memory arrangement. Personally I find it very easy and fast to switch between a host of different stored frequencies. I really dislike radios that need to be toggled between vfo mode and memory mode before you can start scrolling through stored frequencies. And then toggle back to vfo mode to start tuning again. I suppose it's a personal thing. I've always been very fond of this little radio and the battery is just phenomenal. It just goes on and on. Having air band with a very usable squelch control is awesome for an aviation enthusiast. If it could scan a few channels that would make it near perfection! Adam

@@M6RDPadam sounds really good actually. I’m thinking of getting one from Amazon now that they’ve got them on for £68. I’ve already got the Tecsun 330/660 and the 880 so I’m struggling to warrant buying another one. But it looks better with the white display.
@M6RDPadam3 жыл бұрын
@@nclflyer8197 oh yes I see what you mean, the background display looks orange on Amazon. I'd hate that and would give me eye strain. My 808 is white backlit and really comfortable. I find I take it on holiday and out Portable on the beach much more than my 660 which is just a fraction too big and heavy. The only thing I don't like about the Tecsuns and XHDATA is the agc Circuit on shortwave. Unlike Sony radios from the past it can give you listenet fatigue. I listen to lots of shortwave and it is less comfortable on these radios. As the signal strength varies the agc circuit struggles to smooth it out. If I switch over to something like my old chunky realistic dx400 the difference is really marked. Mind you if I'm not mistaken the dx400 uses murata filters. I just don't think they build shortwave radios the same anymore. Younger listeners might not notice the difference because these new modern radios are all they are accustomed to. The 880 is on my radar if I ever damage my 660
@nclflyer81973 жыл бұрын
@@M6RDPadam I really like the 880 but it has two major faults (major to me anyway), the 4khz filter just doesn’t work (it has the very same fidelity as the 3khz filter so it doesn’t sound as crisp). And you cannot save anything after the decimal point. So, for example if you want to save 5505.10khz you can’t. It will only save as 5505.00khz. Even my 330 works as it should with regards to this, so the 880 should !. But other than that tge 880 is great. No muted pauses when scanning fast up the channels (like I think the 808 does, and the Tecsun 330). Problem is all of my 3 radios have different good and bad points, so I’ll end up keeping them all 😬
@M6RDPadam3 жыл бұрын
@@nclflyer8197 That;s really interesting to read about the PL880. You're right about each radio being needed for different features. My radio club think it's mad having lots of portables! But the Sony 7600G is simply the best for NDB beacon reception. XH DATA for a good all-rounder for travelling and airband (I use it for FM in the kitchen as the audio and battery life are so great). The 660 seems to have the edge for utility listening and SW in general. My 660 is old and the tuning knob function jumps too many or no khz when adjusting so it is getting annoying. If your own PL660 failed would you recommend the PL880 as a replacement (apart from the 3khz filter problem you mentioned)? I don't like having to charge NiMHs for the 660 and rerally like the inbuilt lithium battery on the D808. Cheers. Adam (Dawlish)

I almost haven't bought this radio because of this absolutely stupid page memory system.. It is not intuitive at all. I much prefer the Tecsun VM/VF over this mess.. If anything, a better system would have been to have "VM" instead of "PAGE" and simply key in the two digits for whatever memory you want.. 75 for ex.. or 23.. easy.. VM > 2 > 3 - Done!.. Not needing to remember what page you are on.. Where is the current page number even indicated ?? Nowhere, that's where.. Stupid.. Absolute garbage. Same for Freq. Symply VF (or "FREQ" in this case.. ) > punch in the freq - Done!.. And the Digital Tuning Up/Dn Keys should change mode as well from VF to VM for the 2 seconds you're pressing VM Press VM and you could either key in a preset number from 0 to 99, click on the two face tuning Up/Dn Keys to scroll next/prev through the memorized stations, or hold to auto fast scroll until release After 1 or two seconds of no input the face tuning keys should be returning to the default VF mode.. In fact, I would just replace the "FREQ" button with the "VM" button and default the keypad to VF until you press VM - Then the keypad would be in VM mode for a second or two, allowing for keying in a memory preset (two stupid digits.. ) and maybe replace the current "PAGE" with "Enter" or a decimal separator.. I find it absolutely stupid to have a page system and to add insult to injury, you don't even have the current page you're on displayed at all times.. This is just lazy software programming with no excuse whatsoever. Absolute stupid system and absolute laziness and incompetence. The more I look at this, the more stupid it seems.. I simply cannot understand the laziness and the thought process that went into releasing such a garbage UI.. Come to think of it I would even add an option to choose which mode should be the default one when there is no input for a second or two.. VF or VM.. How the fuck is this more logic than simply keying in two digits and go straight to any of the stored memories.. ??? Just like pressing "VF" and entering the frequency... ????? Also, even in frequency mode it's so stupid to have to press the "FREQ" button TWICE!.. Once before (which makes sense, as you're changing to VF mode input entry.. ) and second time after.. (which makes no sense.. ) It just boggles the mind how laziness is so easily excusable simply because "we can adapt".. "we can find workarounds, ways around a problem".. Well then, problems like these will keep coming, because "we can simply work around them, don't we.. ?"..
