Actually, Russia does NOT have a 'huge' population. It is way down (9th) on the list of national populations, squeezed between Bangladesh and Mexico. Furthermore, Russia has a range of ethnic and religious groups all pulling in different directions and also has an ageing population and a very thin population distribution in many parts of the country, especially Siberia and the East. Frankly, the last thing Russia needs is a megalomaniac like Putin trying to run Russia like Stalin ran the Soviet Union. One can only hope that there are enough sane heads in the Russian military to avoid an horrendous large scale war when the inevitable collapse occurs.

If you want to understand this better, please read Winston Churchill's excellent tome entitled "The History of the Second World War". Quite simply Putin wanted a huge win grabbing Ukraine in a quick action. His subordinates weren’t brave enough to tell him what he needed to hear, they just told him he wanted to hear. So, he made this big ego boosting grab based on faulty intelligence. In no way was he prepared for a long war. His biggest mistake was completely misreading how Europe would do without his gas AND come together to supply Ukraine with superior weapons. The main result is the world now sees the full result of Russian endemic corruption, poor leadership and the poor quality of weapons.
