The wave of civil disobedience was triggered by an apartment fire on Friday in which at least 10 people died in the west Xinjiang region. In an unusually bold act that appeared to indicate the level of people’s desperation, a crowd in Shanghai called for the removal of the Communist party and President Xi Jinping in a standoff with police on Saturday, according to videos circulated on Twitter. Chinese people usually refrain from criticising the party and its leaders in public for fear of reprisals.

Even in UK universities I have noticed that Chinese students are very careful with what they say about their government. There's some reports that the Confucius institutes are used to keep tabs on foreign students so they don't become dissidents. If you come to the UK I'd encourage you to not be afraid to meet different people and explore new perspectives so you can form your own critical opinions, but you might feel the need to do it with slightly more discretion than a student that wasn't from China.

Im in China now, as an international student who stayed in the U.S for more than 6 yrs, watching all the comments you guys made, I have to say thank you sooooo much, making me cry in front of the screen at 2:00 am. You guys' spreading is important. Democracy and freedom are the most basic human rights that should not be taken away. Yep! Human rights violations are rife in certain parts of the world. Here in China. Iran. I recall my own great escape from the Middle East and North Africa. *Iran.* 🇮🇷 *Oman* ,🇴🇲 the whole story is ridiculous when *Iraq* 🇮🇶 my *Bahrain* 🇧🇭 to think about it. Without warning I *Sudan* ly 🇸🇩 had to *Qatar* 🇶🇦 cross the border. I had to stay anonymous, so I picked *Somalia* s. 🇸🇴 Just like Bon Jovi, I was basically *Lebanon* 🇱🇧 a prayer the whole time. At night I navigated by the star *Syria* s, 🇸🇾 and slept out in the el *Yemen* ts. 🇾🇪 To keep me going I hummed to myself my favourite song; that *Tunisia* 🇹🇳 great one to shake *Djibouti* 🇩🇯 to. In Cairo I met an unscrupulous man and *Egypt* 🇪🇬 me of all my money. I know it sounds like I ad-*Libya* 🇱🇾 story, but I assure you *Israel.* 🇮🇱 I have such a nost *Algeria* 🇩🇿 for those days. Honestly I could tell you more but it *Kuwait* 🇰🇼 until to *Morocco* . 🇲🇦 🏃‍♂️
