As a frequent traveler, the convenience of Fukuoka airport is hard to beat for any trip to Kyushu. I might consider flying to Kumamoto if the trip is focused exclusively on Kumamoto, but otherwise flying in and out of Fukuoka is almost always the more convenient option.

Kumamoto Airport is for Haneda Access. Kumamoto has only direct international flight is to Taiwan.

@@Tubingenstr I happen to be Taiwanese. Regardless, the basic case presented in the data predicts 1.75 million people on "international lines" by 2051. Shouldn't Haneda access be counted as domestic?

@@andyyang5234 I expected so. I saw most of Overseas visitor to Kumamoto Semicon is via Haneda. Maybe except from TW, CN and maybe SIN. I don't think overseas business traveller to Kumamoto will hugely be increased by TSMC new Fab in Kumamoto. I'm a frequent business traveller in JPN, EU, US, SIN, TW and MY.(mainly in EU and US) last 30 yrs. 1.75 mil by 2051? I don't think so.

Many people who visit Japan love Kyushu, but they won't choose Kumamoto-Airport unless the air tickets are cheap, right? This is because Fukuoka-Airport has more flights, is more prosperous, and is more convenient. Since most foreign visitors to Kumamoto Airport use rental cars or group sightseeing buses, we believe that few foreign tourists will use the new airport railroad even if it is built.

@@Su---- Right, that's pretty much what I mean, and therefore the estimations on international arrivals appear quite too optimistic IMO. Fukuoka airport is ridiculously close to city center (Hakata Station) by just about any standard, and by extension, can reach Kumamoto station via Hakata and Shinkansen in somewhat less than an hour, depending on how good the connection is. This makes the Kumamoto airport proposal even less attractive, assuming 40 minutes to Kumamoto station via train. Of all the options, I actually like the monorail proposal the best. Kumamoto isn't exactly all that well served by rail, and there are vast areas in the south and east that are not currently served. A line through those areas might make more sense, and could help develop the area between the airport and city. That said, they probably calculated it to be not worth the investment already, given how expensive it is.
