Prof! You (& perhaps all Filipino historians) must insist on rectifying the national educational curriculum starting from the early grades through to higher education levels to include the in-depth study of the life & works of mhdp & treat the same with primacy. This would be the most effective way to multiply & instil in our youth the values, work ethic & edify the sacrifices of the national hero Marcelo H. Del Pilar and eventually institutionalise the same. That way, the Philippines would at once fulfill the wishes of our foremost & well-recognised national hero Jose Rizal’s wish: “Bakit di tayo nagkaron ng sandaang Marcelo H. Del Pilar?”

Mhdp Based on personal experience, it used to be the case that Marcelo H. del Pilar was among top of mind national heroes. I do not know at which point mhdp slipped from the Filipino psyche as a people or from national awareness. I’m now 61 but even during my early education days, I’d say mhdp was somehow still considered among the top of mind national heroes or his name still recognisable albeit w/o knowing the full impact of his works. But since having gone on a deeper dive about MHDP’s life (wch includes watching this video lecture), I discovered that the preceding generation had a totally diff attitude towards mhdp who was then highly esteemed and practically venerated by the people. I cite as an example an official act of the Phil legislature in the 1920s (headed by I think then Senate Prez Manuel Quezon & Speaker Villarreal) to locate & exhume the remains of MHDP in Spain & return the said remains to the Phils. The account about how the Filipino masses truly valued this hero mhdp made mention about the widespread heartfelt & grateful reception mhdp’s remains got from the people from the highest levels of society (including Supreme Court chief justice & associate justices, & the legislature, other top politicians, socialites) to Labor leaders (MHDP rendered free legal services to the “Indio” people and other works beneficial to the awakening of Filipino masses even before he self-exiled to Spain) as well as thousands of the ordinary common man who either themselves or their parents benefitted from MHDP’s generosity or talents. Only 25 years had passed when MHDP’s remains were successfully returned to the Phils., thanks to the act of Legislature then, and part of the week long ceremonies included burial of remains at the manila cemetery. After Wch presumably the primacy of MHDP’s works began to wane to become just among the national heroes, but even more sadly, now his name has become increasingly obscure and definitely lesser known than Jose rizal, bonifacio & some others as far as todays youth are concerned. Fortunately, during FVR’s time, the discussion on national heroes was raised & a bill was submitted to the House to declare the 9 national heroes including mhdp be declared as such. (Too bad to date the House has deferred any action on it whatsoever. ). I can only hazard a guess as to what may have propelled FVR to do it, but he did issue an EO (or some other legal way to order it) to erect a shrine &/or establish an MHDP museum and seed-funded the project amounting to 5M pesos. Hence the existing MHDP Shrine located in Bulakan, Bulacan. If only for that I can now say I have a favorite Phil. prez. Again I can only hazard a guess however that the historical info FVR received about MHDP (before deciding to establish a shrine/museum) was what actually led him to order it, perhaps with the wisdom & realisation of the past and potential future impact of the life & works of the very brave Marcelo H. del Pilar can have on the Filipino nation. Politicians do have some use sometimes. But historians! Thank you Xiao Chua for this lecture. Very enlightening indeed. May the inadequacies of some politicians not stop you from educating the rest of us.
