Yuval Noah Harari is a New York Times bestselling author whose books have sold over 12 million copies and translated into more than 45 languages. He’s often referred to as one of the most profound thinkers of our time. And in this episode you will see why…
SHOWNOTES
How we can hack humans and manipulate their desires [3:26]
How algorithms will learn to understand you better than you understand yourself (and why you could be replaced by one) [5:03]
Why corporations will even be able to predict your sexual orientation… [8:50]
The reality of outsourcing the self-discovery process… [12:27]
How algorithms will change the way we make art… [15:49]
Can AI save us from cancer? (See how it’s possible, but decide for yourself if it's dangerous)... [18:10]
The battle between privacy and health... [19:29]
How to take control of the story you tell yourself and why you need to stop thinking of your life as a movie… [21:09]
Why we’re heading into the direction of immortality and the future is just a series of massive disruptions [28:44]
Why you need to continuously reinvent yourself if you want to survive to 2035. [30:01]
The two most important tools you will need to succeed in the world of AI (and they’re not what you think). [32:05]
Why Yuval believes that science fiction is the most important artistic genre… [34:25]
See what Yuval has to say about the world’s 3 biggest challenges… [37:29]
QUOTES
“We Are Now Hackable Animals”
“When infotech merges with biotech what you get is the ability to create algorithms that understand me better than I understand myself.” [5:20]
“Maybe the most important thing in life is to get to know yourself better. But for all of history this was a process of self-exploration which you did from things like meditation, sports, or art, and complementation. But what does it mean when the process of self-exploration is being outsourced to a big data algorithm? The philosophical implications are mind-boggling.” [12:34]
“The story of your life is made of bits and pieces and it only makes sense" [23:50]

My thoughts throughout this discussion frequently harked back to our capacity to delude ourselves. Emotion trumps reason whenever it gets a foothold. And Yuval's statements that our "best investment is in emotional intelligence and mental balance" and "to keep learning" rings very true.

That's 100% right. That's the main reason I studied engineering. I wasn't passionate about it, but I thought "I'm going to a place to do an intense mental training, and when I finish, I'd have developed more discipline, endurance and mental skills. After that, I can switch to anything I want and it would be easier."

I believe the exact opposite, I see the interviewer as someone who just focus on turning every information into something useful for people to be more productive and things like that, when someone like Harari can teach about so much information that is simply about understanding of the world. The interviewer is not smart enough to take advantage of all of the knowledge for the complex human experience, and only focus on how to find your passion, how to be productive, etc... it is a very closed mind, in my opinion. But it is interesting to see that you think exactly the opposite.

@@AranErlich Yes, I know, it is a noble reason. But Harari seems to be more interested in the truth, wheter it is pleasant or not, it does not matter If It Will make you better or worse. The interviewer wants to make everything about how you can improve yourself, which is a narrow perspective, and so wastes the intelligence of this guy.

27:40 - The "useless class." There is no such thing. Our purpose in the world is not to serve an economy. Our purpose is to explore life. To be ourselves. To discover things, and share those lessons, good and bad, with others. We work to live - we do not live to work.

There are contradictions within this logic: Being able to predict a behavior so accurately also means having the ability to change it. So prediction loses its self-sufficiency! It seems to predict when the light bulb will illuminate while you stand by the switch yourself and turn it on.

So good to see him really hammering across the seriousness of the implications. The philosophical intricacies are not immediately obvious to people who're only interested in hacking humans so they can become high performance machines. That's the problem with stuff like this: it's beyond the comprehension of most people, and will inevitably land up in the hands of those people who don't particularly care to understand it any more than is required to get what they want (money, power, sex etc.)

I really enjoyed this conversation, AI has incredible potential. I work with an A.I. company and see it every day... I will say though, one thing to keep in mind is intuition and GUT are incredibly important and to rely all of your decision making on algorithms may not be the best idea. Use both hemispheres of your brain, left and right, including that brain in your gut! And your heart, gotta follow that sometimes too... Different parts of you will guide you at different times. Don't be afraid to follow that. You will be led places that A.I. won't take you... and that journey is INCREDIBLY important. Trust me! Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. - Charlie Chaplin Maybe we have the answers but the machines give us the data to work smarter, faster? :) idk. I'm still learning here!

What kind of "mumbo-jumbo 3 brains" science did you learn at school? The hemisphere theory is bullshit and only bacterias live in your gut to digest food. I am not really sure if you should be working for an AI company.

There are contradictions within this logic: Being able to predict a behavior so accurately also means having the ability to change it. So prediction loses its self-sufficiency! It seems to predict when the light bulb will illuminate while you stand by the switch yourself and turn it on.

Ashutosh is right, you're stupid and shouldn't work for an AI company. Someone who should work for an AI company would say something like "algorithms are smarter than people, we should do as the algorithms command, you are a pile of particles whose sum total is less than the sum of each individual particle."

Wow, this guy was so easy to understand, so fascinating. Ive been reinventing my whole life with out even understanding. My dad immigrant from Italy, with only 3 years education, was given a trade to learn when he was 7 years old. He came alone USA @ 16. Worked in that trade for 60 + years. In order for him to keep a 6 day work week until he was 80 years old he had to re-invent himself with in that trade because it was physically demanding. He did it naturally because he absolutely loved what he did. He went from building homes to building cabinets when he was 55 years old. Learning something new IMO is the key to happiness.

Tom is always amazing creative and innovatively help full . Harari is not a astrologer but predicted the future well many generations ahead. Time is precious so imbibe the suggestion given on our daily living immediately. I tell my story coz I am experiencing what he tells. India the catholic nuns n priests abused n tortured it's going to be more than a decade. Now people related to me are abused n manipulated so i am forced to obey them. The Indian Armed forces also joined in a massive assault in Wellington staff College Tamil Nadu where my husband retired. I went seeking help from educated power full men i was further abused massively. My desperate prayers for great minds to come and bring awareness to ordinary humans. My desperate prayers for all involved to immediately now stop the abuse n manipulation let me and my family live in peace. Thank you one and all for helping me.
