But buying expensive gifts and having a texting relaltionship with a stranger she doesn't know who might be catfishing her is dangerous and detrimental because they were supposed to be saving to fix the house. I really don't know what happened when she went back to Ethiopia. It's possible that she saw everything he had been saying about her on youtube. Maybe that's when she met the Ethiopian guy she's texting ad he told her Xiao Bai was rich and using her. Maybe her mother was hearing bad stuff from the Ethiopian guy. After all, there is that video going around about Mr Matchmaker and there was that person who was trying to scare Angelina. Unlike the Jintao situation where Brother Hang could explain matters to Angelina and mediate between Angelina and Jintao, neither Xaio Bai and Messi have a mutual friend to explain matters. Also, Messi comes from a troubled family where men aren't trusted So it's possible that she or her family are already prone to distrust Xiao Bai and they believe the Ethiopian youtuber's videos..
