I have one mi9, and before had an redmi note 4x and to be honest I dont get the recommendations.. because it's not nice. we paid for the phone already and they are making money still with us.. it's ridiculous.. about the region, if I use UK region I can't even use Themes. Have to change it to USA.

The best compromise for is setting the region to Hong Kong. It gives you face unlock without the ads and the theme store .

I would argue that Denmark is better. It is protected by the GDPR, unlike Hong Kong. Face unlock still works too. Only downside is that the themes app gets restricted, but that's probably for the best.

Yeah thank the EU GDPR for that, if your honest and say it's being used in Europe, they would have to demonstrate that your image isn't being used for X Y and Z. Face unlock also works for the Hong Kong region btw but I'm sure ads still exist anywhere outside the EU

Shad8x They show ads because the phone is cheap and they can do this because they make the phone. There's nothing "outrageous" about ads. Just because you don't enjoy something doesn't mean "outrage" is a justified reaction. If you don't like them you don't have to buy the phoe.

Miui has so many features. However there are things that cannot be forgiven -disappearing notifications -permissions get revoked randomly (the worst problem - may cost you your job once email or SMS is held behind a revoked permission) -bloat -ads on the ROM I will buy xiaomi devices since they are cheap, and slap Pixel Experience, Lineage OS or Havoc immediately

Amazing phone, but I agree with the notifications style! why does Xiaomi not give us the OPTION to enable to us to let the icons stay on the bar after receiving notifications. other than that, the phone is perfect in my opinion ; regarding the region, Italy will work as well!

FYI if you don't mind unlocking your bootloader the Xiaomi.eu rom (9.3.28 is the latest) fixes a lot of software issue. This is an internationalized ("globalized") version of the Chinese developer Rom.

Thanks others mentioned this, but 99% of people I think won't be unlocking the bootloader or flashing and I review based of stock ROMs. But thank you for the tip, I will do that if I keep it in the end.

Thanks for a honest review. For me this is how a review should be so that you can be informed in what troubles you are gonna dive in. For some people this phone might be ok, for others it might be unbearable. Sadly most reviewers just look at camera, screen, sound, battery and games while missing on the regular use aspect.

In the Q&A yesterday Xiaomi said that they want the ads to be gone or at least fewer ads! The reason why face unlocking isn't available in in the european Union is due to legal terms of the privacy. Specific biometric data is being sent in China, and according to european law this is prohibited.

There are too many workarounds on MIUI to be a daily driver. The notifications, the face unlock, bloatware, ads, etc. I ended up using some supernotch app, a debloatware from a dev named Saki-EU which didn t require to unlock the bootloader and finally i was forced to flash a custom rom. But even those are not perfect. Best experience i got was Pixel Experience with a curved edges app that didn't work properly and melted my battery. (4h/6h SoT). Ended up in xiaomi.eu, away from the world and notifications.

I think the face unlock have something to do with Europe and lack of security. The image stabilization is great with just EIS compare with the OIS of the P30 plus unfortunately the sound is very poor and not sure if that can be fix with software updates. Xiaomi phones with Chinese roms always have problems with battery, even in EU rom the battery isn't great. My old mi mix 2s was very bad.

Why I switched from the Xiaomi 8 to the Samsung S10 ? Bigger battery (smaller battery is always unacceptable, we don't need paper thin phones.) No OIS in the camera. (OIS is one of the most expensive parts of a camera module, hence they cut it.) No headphone jack No stereo audio speakers No IPX rating.

Have not used the camera enough to judge but you seem to be right 4. Not using raise to wake, but the battery can easily get me through a full day of use 5. Never seen a crash

You bring up some very valid & useful points in this video. I hope Xiaomi developers watch it & take the information on board & get their act together because they seem to be dropping the ball to an unacceptable extent. As you stated it's quite likely their development team is overloaded due to so many new models coming out BUT if that's the case then they should be hiring more people if necessary. The smartphone business is incredibly cut throat if a company wishes to stay at the higher level they can't afford to drop the ball. regarding #2: the face unlock is not the first thing which is region locked. I've had a redmi 4x and it had an app called "Wallpaper Carousel". It swapped the background picture of the unlock screen from a variety of Xiaomi prefixed galleries. I'm also in Europe and first it worked fine until an update some time ago, then it was strangely region locked! I had to switch the region to India as well just to be able to use what they had offered in the first place. It's one of the things which can drive you nuts just thinking about it, even if it affects only such minor thing. The same with face unlock? Ridiculous.

Yes, i drives me nuts and I don't understand how face unlocking some say there for them for Spain. But the option isn't present for me. But on other regions it will show. And the notifications thing as small as it might be for some means I will no doubt sell this phone on. That and the audio also in video is such an easy fix but they ignore it and have done so for years!

I Bought and use the phone in the Netherlands. Region set to the Netherlands. No Ads. Can enable face unlock but has a big warning that it is not as secure as a pin or fingerprint. I do have the dissapearing notifications but i get them on my smartwatch anyway. It is a workaround for me. I have seen the stutter in 4k recording, but it is less then in your video, maybe related to the adds? Anyway for the 500 Euros it is a hell of a phone with a beautiful screen. No lag or stutter in the interrface yet for me. But i only have the phone for 10 days now. Just giving my 2cents since you are on of the reviewers of which i bought this phone :)

I believe Xiaomi have come out and said they will update MIUI with the permanent notification icons for phones with teardrop notches. Regarding the face unlock, local laws might forbid gathering face data by Xiaomi, that's why it might be disabled in certain regions like Europe (we got GDPR).

Look into how bad the software updates have been for the Mi A2. Android Pie was awful, January update bricked some users phones, February update brought some crazy bugs and weird color scheme, March had 2 updates. 1st one bricked some phones and brought bugs to those that didn't bet bricked, it was pulled. 2nd March update came along and a few phones were bricked. Front facing flash has been a mess since Android Pie, Camera picture quality has diminished, portrait mode is awful.

Xiaomi is the best price/hardware ratio. But there are always some bugs in software, had 2 Xiaomi phones (Note3, proximity sensor failes, gallery app fails, and MiA1 reseting itself, proximity sensor fails) always some trouble with Xiaomi, went for Samsung and have no problems, now its Huawei time, lets see how P30 performs.

For those who don't know, ads are in some ROMs from certains countries. I have a Mi9 SE and I have face unlock and zero ads since I bought it. If you have ads just put a MIUI rom from a country that doesn't have ads.

I'm running Xiaomi Eu Rom on my girlfriends Mi9 which is based on the beta and performance has been great, battery life is slightly worse than it was originally but no standby drain like you are experiencing

Ads in the ROM is their business model to keep prices down. Camera quality in smartphones is about 30% hardware and 70% software tweaks so they can definitively do better. Btw. I love honest reviews like this.

It's easy to remove those ads just go to 'cleaner settings' and turn-off 'receive recommendations' ..same thing to do with other default apps just turn-off recommendations..The ads will go away...

Thank´s a lot for the update about your experience with the mi9. Since you own a Mi9 AND a Mi9SE, I would like to know if I buy a Mi9Se global (which I prefer because of the size), whether between these two smartphones in everyday use, a significant difference in performance will be noticeable? Photos are not important to me, I do not play games, but rather the launch of apps or switching between them. My normal usage is limited to whatsapp, youtube, a few rare snapshots, browsing various imageboard apps and internet browsers. Thank´s in advance, cheers!

Remember the phone has had an update since this video and most things have been fixed 😎 the battery is insane I use my phone alot and it lasts the whole day and I'm constantly looking expecting it to be draining 🌟 ps . They have fixed the notification problem. 👌 I've not bothered by face recognition I don't think I'd use it anyways I wouldn't trust it I just use the thumb and it's fast if pressed correctly 👌 I agree the camera is hit and miss sometime quality sometimes fuzzy and poor no matter what camera you use 💩

Definitely agree with you here, I have been using a Xiaomi device since the mi2, and I actually think the software is getting worse. Like you said the advertisement is a no no in my eyes, Cameras never like upto the specs and ROM battery life seems to get worse after each update.

Yes last few years to me it's only getting worse. Xiaomi needs to adjust their focus I feel, fewer models and more focus on bug-free great ROM experience.

Was thinking of buying this but really not sure with all these bugs. Coming from s7 edge I imagine it would feel like a downgrade. I don't care about speed, I have no speed issues on exynos chip from 2016. No audio jack or waterproofing is annoying too.

Specific App Settings > Receive recommendations [off], turns off ads lol. but yes, MIUI is starting to annoy me alot... notifications are being delayed for hours... massive stutter when browsing hashtags on instagram... the whole UI just freezes randomly and the only way to unfreeze it is to lock the screen and unlock again

The notification icons is already "fixed" in the Chinese beta ROM, the ads you can disable them in 20seconds in the settings menu, the face unlock again 20seconds to activate it, just pick Hong Kong instead of India, the camera/audio is a valid complain, third party softwares shouldn't be the solution.

Those ads are bad, but one has to realise that that's one of the ways how Xiaomi can release phones with such aggressive pricing. Also, Xiaomi describes itself as an "Internet Services" company. That is how they make their money. So if you buy a Xiaomi device you shouldn't expect any more, and I don't expect Xiaomi to change its ad practices on its MiUI devices soon

I bought the mi 9 after watching your review of it and I've been extremely happy with it. I was afraid the battery was a bit small but it lasts surprisingly long! Just like you i only have problems with software. #1 is that because i installed the nova launcher, it crashes about once a day and then android restarts on me. It's rather annoying. #2 is that i really don't like the camera quality. I just can't figure out what's wrong with it, but the all images are incredibly soft, almost as if there's some kind of smoothing filter, even on the rear cameras. The messages not showing up doesn't even bother me. Also, i live in the Netherlands and face unlock is available here and I haven't seen ads aswell.

I use T-Mobile and I have been using this phone for less than a month. I keep losing phone service and I'm not sure what to do. It's not because of coverage as there is ample coverage in my area, near Boulder, Colorado, and I've never had any problems traveling abroad. I tried turning on WIFI on the phone, but that deactivated my SIM Card. Do you know how to fix this issue??

I recommend you change region to Singapore instead of India, no ads there and face unlock is working. I also read it somewhere that beta rom fixed notification and standby issue(seems to cause by Google services) It's on beta rom so you probably have to wait for a while for stable version.
