It's here: the more budget-friendly version of Xiaomi's Mi 9; the Mi 9 SE. But how much had to be compromised to make this phone quite a bit more affordable, and is it any good compared to the flagship Mi 9? AliExpress: bit.ly/XMF_AE_M...

The Mi 9 SE surely had to make some compromises to be this much cheaper than the Mi 9 and that starts with the body. It is quite a bit smaller, but that doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. -Matter of fact I personally really kinda like the size of the Mi 9 SE. Its corners have a different feeling as well, making it quite different in design and hand-feel.
On the inside, quite some things are different as well as the Mi 9 SE has a Snapdragon 712, instead of the Snapdragon 855 found in the Mi 9. It has a bit of a smaller battery, and there's no Qi wireless charging to be found on the SE-model either. The Mi 9 SE does have a 18-Watts quick charger and also has the same in-glass fingerprint scanner as found on the Mi 9 which is impressively fast and reliable. The camera setup has a similar looking 3-lens rear camera with a super wide angle and telephoto lens, however, these have a slightly higher aperture and take photos with fewer megapixels than found on the Mi 9. The main camera is exactly the same though, and it is very good.
So how much different is it in daily use?
Overall The Mi 9 and the Mi 9 SE do feel the same as they both come with MIUI 10, which gives it the same type of experience.
As the Mi 9 SE has a bit of a slower processor, APPS tend to start up a little bit slower but it's really just marginal and it does not affect you that much in day-to-day use.
The camera on the MI 9 is surely a bit better than the 9-SE, but that really depends on which lens you are using. The main lens gives you identical results in all my tests. The wide angle and the telephoto lens do give much better results on the Mi 9, but that's not to say that the MI 9 SE gives really bad results though.
Overall I am quite impressed with the Mi 9 SE, it feels well-built, works really well and it's quite a bit cheaper than the Mi 9. So if you are on a tighter budget this good be a very good alternative to getting the Mi 9.
