I bought myself a Xiaomi Yi 42.5mm F1.8 out of curiosity, it was only RM270/USD70. This is the cheapest Micro Four Thirds lens with AF. Though we already have good options in similar focal length from both Olympus and Panasonic, I thought it was a harmless fun trying out this lens on my Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III. I share plenty of sample images taken with this lens and my thoughts about the budget lens from Xiaomi!
For those of you who prefer an article format instead of watching video, stop whining, here is the full review article for Xiaomi Yi 42.5mm F1.8 robinwong.blogspot.com/2021/0...

Finally, public filming is officially allowed by the government, I wasted no time and made this video outdoor. Such a breath of fresh air, finally being out in the open, after months being trapped in my tiny room. And you know what? It poured cats and dogs. I really hate Malaysian weather sometimes. On a more positive note, I do have more good news to share, stay tuned for my coming videos!

For only 70 dollars this lens is definetely awesome, and the macro mode is interesting. The real con for me is the absence of manual focus if some day arrives a 16 or 17 version of this xiaomi lens i will buy it. My most used lenses are the olympus 45 1.8, and the sigma 30 1.4. Great video Robin! it's nice to take photos outdoors :)

Been a while since I watched your videos -- life getting in the way!!! Great to see you -- be careful and don't get hit by lightning!!! And check with the OM-D folks to get you some weather sealing for you!!! Stay safe!!! I use the Panasonic Lumix 42.5 f1.7 -- on my Lumix G85 and it is a nice, handy portrait, med-telephoto lens. But the "macro" mode of this Yi lens is tempting! (I have a Yi 4K+ action cam and have been very impressed with the quality, reliability and features of that product) Cheers -- gonna get you a cup of *ick* coffee! Try some nice Earl Grey tea!!! :-)

Thanks for the kind words and coffee/tea. Appreciate that. I think having the Panasonic 42.5mm F1.7, I don't see a reason to get the Yi, the macro mode allows you to go close, but it is still not a true macro lens.

It's 2024 now. I've owned this lens for... three-ish years now? I got it when it was just released. I've been loving it ever since and it's one of the purchases I have had absolutely no regrets on. I've even used the macro mode a few times. I mean, it's no actual macro lens and doesn't come close to something like the 7Artisans 60mm macro, but it's nice to get a few close-ups when necessary. Also, it's light. If it was a tad smaller it would be one of my favorite lenses on the system. Now, it's not pocketable/doesn't fit in my handbag, so I can't keep it on like I can with the Panny 20mm/1.7. I pair it with either the Lumix GX9 or Olympus E-M5II.

Just sold mine for peanuts, because I've already own two Oly 45mm f1.8 The lens is cheap and image quality is more than correct. The only big downside was the flare and chromatic aberration compared to Olympus. No manual focusing too. Anyway, nice lens to try, with a macro mode (then minimal aperture is f3.5).

Just clicked to buy one on Ebay. I have a couple of pro zooms but only a Lumix 20 prime in that range. So, with macro included, it looks like it will fill a gap in my kit. Thanks, Robin!

I looked at the Xiaomi cameras and this lens when they came out, but because I have the Olympus 45 which is far and away the best portrait lens I've ever owned so I didn't buy either the camera or the lens. Robin, thank you for another very interesting video! I've bought this lens several months ago even cheaper than you - out of curiosity. I really like its optical quality (by the way, it's much better wide open than Pentax SMC-A 50 mm f/1.7 from the 1980s), I like its bokeh, I can stand its quite loud autofocus, but lack of manual focus (it was possible only through the YI body) disqualifies this otherwise very descent lens for many uses. It's a real shame. There is another cheap Chinese lens though - YONGNUO 42.5 mm f/1.7 - apparently also descent optically and it has manual focus; but it is more expensive, has no macro mode and they say that it has tremendously loud autofocus and aperture mechanics and breaks easily.

I got the kit with my YI M1, which was the camera that introduced me to Micro Four Thirds, on that camera when you go into manual mode buttons appear on the screen to let you manual focus. It is very odd though because, the other lens that came with the camera has a working focus ring. It feels like the two lenses weren't designed by the same people at YI. I suppose it doesn't matter much, they abandoned mirrorless cameras and haven't done app or firmware updates in a long time, the iOS app no longer works. I use an EM-1 II now, but the M1 is still small enough to easily fit in my purse with a small lens on it, so it still has a purpose and the sensor seems pretty comparable to the Olympus one too.

This video just popped up again and got me wondering about the yi camera. I haven't used my camera much for the last several years. (Original EM-5). Was wondering if it'd be worth using a cheap camera like the yi m1 over my old em-5. (I know the m1 is pretty old by now too) Found one together with this lens for less than $150. If I didn't already have the olympus 45mm 1.8....I would definitely just grab that.

Robin, thanks for this review and all your videos. About a year ago I picked up a YIM1 with this lens attached for around 100 US at a pawn shop that didn't really know much about cameras. I keep this lens as my default lens on my G95 and switch to the other lenses as the situation dictates. I also like this lens. I've got the YI M1 and both the 42.5mm f/1.8 and 12-40mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lenses. When it comes to the zoom, the Panasonic 12-32mm kit lens is much better and also very cheap. The 45mm isn't terrible for the money, but I never use it on my Panasonics because no manual focus and I seem to get a lot more CA on mine than you're seeing with yours. Certainly not close to the Olympus for me. :)

Hi Robin. Appreciate you showing some other mft brands as there are people with a really low budget. Must say that lens is not bad as a budget lens. My concern will be that it properbilly want last because of the all plastic construction. For me i have the oly 45mm f1.8 and its just great. When it comes to other mft lenses my only other pick will be be the Venus laowa brand but they tend to be slightly pricey but good construction

No, Oly's 45mm doesn't offer a macro setting, but I can get as close as approx. 24 cms of my subject when I screw on Oly's 'Macro Converter MCON-P02' (which also fits Oly's 25mm lens). It's not perfect 1:1 macro of course, but the combination is compact and offers splendid results, I think.

I am not entirely sure Xiaoyi is the same Brand as Xiaomi, They are connected, but they are 2 separate companies as far as I was able to tell. I too have this lens, and it is branded Xiaoyi, just like yours, visible at minute 2:16 in your video. This doesn't change the fact that it is an incredibly good lens for its price point.

I have this kit. The lens is amazingly sharp for the price! A lens hood is mandatory as flare is awful. The Yi M1 is a fantastic bargain - a 20MP sensor give similar IQ to the M1 & M5 at lower ISO at 1/5 the price. Hopefully they'll come out with M2 with tilting screen.

So I ended up leaving it in that setting. I would guess that it might be faster in distant focus if Macro is off, but that has never had an effect on my usage. Did you notice anything?

For street photography, I always felt the Olympus lens is a bit too long and have I problems focusing close if you need that in tighter spaces. May be this lens could overcome some of the limitatations?

I own the lens, for the price I am completely satisfied with it. The only negative feature is that it focuses slowly in poor light conditions. And of course no manual focus. Great price / performance ratio.

@@AbbasBinYounas OM-D 10 Mark II. AF assist lamp does not help for night picture of city etc. Of course in room it helps. I compared it with olympus F1,8/45mm and auto focus of Yi 42,5 in poor light is really slow.... But for this price it is fantastic lens.

Bought this lens almost a year ago from Aliexpress for 52USD/+-RM220. Using it on my Panasonic GX85. Silver version,badly scratch after I placed it alongside metal bodied 7Artisan 25mm f1.8 but doesn't affect the function. Too bad no black version when I bought it. Still looking for my 1st autofocus 25mm. Just wondering where is Yi 25mm f1.8😁 And still looking for my 1st OMD , contemplating to buy either EM1 mark II or EM5 mark iii. Video stabilisation on Panasonic GX85 is not that fantastic but somehow usable. Looking forward for my new OMD camera once I got my backdated allowance probably end of this year and pair it to my old Zuiko 14-54mm.

@Centauri27 3 жыл бұрын
Wow, $52 USD! That's amazing. I can see the surface getting scratched very easily. I own both a GX85 and E-M5 MKIII. I would recommend getting the E-M5 MkIII as you get most of the features of the E-M1MkII. And it's a newer camera, so you'll be supported with firmware upgrades longer. The E-M1MkII is just about at the end of its firmware upgrade life.
@robinwong
@robinwong 3 жыл бұрын
I'd suggest going for E-M1 Mark II. Metal body construction, more rugged build, beefier hand-gripping area for better handling, and more feature-rich too in photos/videos. Dual SD card slots, and also much longer battery life! It is designed for PRO use. However, if you intend to get something truly compact, yet offering similar performance and image quality, then E-M5 Mark III is the option. I'd still push for E-M1 Mark II.
@azimliza

@@robinwong will likely go with EM1 mark II. Size and weight are not a problem considering it will be paired with the relatively monstrous Zuiko 14-54mm. And really missed that flip out screen which I enjoyed in my Olympus E620 and Panasonic G3 ; both I still own but rarely use. GX85 is a small camera with relatively heavy weight. I even have to add on finger grip when using it with Zuiko 14-54mm.

Question. Since I have the 45mm 1.8 Would it be wise to add Macro tubes to get this function. Or would it be better to just purchase this lens? In the USA the difference is about $40. I think the Macro function would be great. You shoot Macro already I would love to see how those came out.
@robinwong
@robinwong 3 жыл бұрын
I'd suggest getting a macro converter like Raynox DCR-250 (though you may need an adapter). Extension tubes are just too much of a hassle for me.

Hi Robin, I just checked this out on British EBay and the price, buying it from China, was £91.19p. That's more expensive than you paid. I'm not complaining, just giving you some extra information. I'll look at other sites and see if I can get it cheaper. That EBay price is free postage from China, so I guess that should be taken into consideration. Have you tried it in low light situations - how did it perform indoors in the evening? Nice to see you out and about again, thunder storms permitting!
@robinwong
@robinwong 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah pricing may vary from location to location, and China is a long way from UK, in comparison to here in Malaysia. The lens is also not new, and was sold as a bundle with Yi M1 camera and kit lens, so depending on which retailer and how much they are willing to price the lens, there are variations of pricing unfortunately.
