I could never understand why he treated her so badly, Ruryi was the only one who sincerely loved him with no ulterior motives, she never lied, nor schemed and she cared for others in the Harem. It was utterly ridiculous that he needed this many woman, he had lots of sons ( hiers) and daughters, no need for more. He was a greedy, dirty man who would sleep with anyone and he lost the very best thing that ever happened to him, and he lived for many many long years with that regret.

I believe that the only woman that he truly loved was Ruyi , he always loved her, others never came close to that. He finally realised the extent of his love when she had died and it was too late, and he had to live out many long years with that torture and regret. Ruyi gave her everything to him and he let her down so many times, she remained loyal, loving and without motive, she treated everyone with kindness, grace and was the ultimate Queen. But she reached her breaking point with him and his lustful, dirty and disgraceful behaviour had no bounds. When he realised all the evil that had been done by the women he had by his side instead of Ruyi he couldn’t even apologise properly. I’m glad she died quickly and died young so she could get the freedom she badly deserved from the living hell she had endured.

This scene is so beautiful yet sad, especially cos of what he did in the future to Ruyi up till her death. Taking away everything, finding out the whole truth then try to give it all back and she was like "NOPE I'm good"! I also see that at the end, her love for him vanished. She saw everything he did and everything he did to their children and she just got sick of him coming back everytime saying "the past is the past, let's start again! Dude it's one too many times

In this series Wei did do so much evil but she was not alone. Had the emperor not changed, she would have been like Jia Guifei, powerful but with people knowing of what she was capable. After a while, the emperor choose to keep his blinders on, like a horse being steadily lead through a burning building. Also, we must keep as much history recorded. Not only is it fascinating, in my opinion, those who do not learn from the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them.

The series portrayed about "love and desire" but in the past, it's not. Marrying is not about love but about the "connection of power" and "suitability". The bride and the groom may face each other the first time when they've got married. And the fact is Lady of Nara clan was the only Manchu consort who held the high rank at that time and was his secondary wife since he was the prince. Well early on we saw she liked the idea of westerns being married to only one person , from talking to the French painter. But since this takes place in ancient china and their culture is different than western culture, they grow up with the thought process of more than one wife /having a harem. So to an extent we can believe she has come to terms with marrying a prince she fell in love with, has to marry other women for political reasons. I think it's only until rong comes into the picture she sees it's not political anymore, and that breaks her heart that their love isn't special, he's able to feel that with anyone. Which I think really is heartbreaking cuz at least in the early episodes it seems like he definitely loved her as much as she did.
