Thanks Eric for the demo of the rig. I really like the sunken vfo it makes it less likely to get hooked up out in the bush on SOTA. Looks a similar size to a kx2, and a good price for what you get not like Elecraft who have the base rate for the rig then the normal things like tuner and mic are extra cost. I am a kx3 owner for 4 years now have used a kx2 on SOTA too but they tend to run a bit hot here in vk so that heat sink on the x5105 included not another accessory is great.

Subbed to your channel as well. Nice video. Firmware updates will use HyperTerminal , kind of an archaic method to use. Good reports on mine so far on SSB on 20 meters.

The advantage of that is that the updates are OS independent. You can use a Linux terminal emulator, for example.

I appreciated seeing the warranty card! I'd seen a few videos on the RS-918, from another KZbin ham. But, after an internal part failure he wasn't able to get the radio repaired and working. I emailed the supplying company at Amazon and asked about warranty work. They said for a hardware problems they would send me the part, so I could accomplish the repair myself. For a software problem they would recommend upgrading the software. Or, return to US warehouse for replacement (if the above options did not work). Going through this list made me very happy to see your warranty card! Gee, I've typed a lot. I watched your video on the RS-918. With your experience, and the now post-production 5105, would you offer a compare/contrast of these two radios?

MFJ is linking directly to this video, it falls short of a review though. I’d call it a long winded intro. Would be interested in actual specs and findings, like power consumption on RX, TX, etc. I’m trying to find the CW filter, you show 500hz in the video which I hope is just a default and that it can go much narrower.

Seems like a very cool and interesting radio. I have only owned a few and haven't wrecked any of them so far. I am sure that it is coming though. I have had an intermittant power supply problem which left me talking into a de-powered radio more than once and the idea that such a typical problem could tank my radio is unnerving to the point of being a very possible deal breaker. This seems like one of those unlikely occurances which most certainly will eventually happen. Maybe a twist-lock connection would be a start, but that wouldn't help if you had a power failure such as one might experience in say. a hurricane.

Regarding the power switching problem you mention at 4 minutes. That, right there, is the kind of firmware fix they should take care of. There's no reason in software, they shouldn't be able to simply drop out of transmit if you have a failure on external power.

A helpful video and it looks like a neat rig. For my portable rig uses (SOTA), I like the X-108G and Elecraft KX-3 combo. Both are light, easy to carry and don't seem to dent the LiFpo battery I use. Antenna of choice is a segmented dipole and if its possible to erect it, the 20W native output of the X-108G makes phone contacts easier. Another thought, the nearly $700 price tag gets you close to the Yaesu FT-891 which, IMHO is a lot more radio.

Have you looked at the output on a spectrum analyzer to see if it is clean enough to meet FCC specs? Most Chinese radios do not meet the specs and if you use them then you are in violation of the rules and can be fined.
@HamRadioConcepts

sierge1 I'll leave that to someone else to show in video. But your concern doesn't affect me when 890,000 people are using Chinese radios and Also, I once did a test using a China radio and made some contacts saying I was on a Flex or ic7300 and not one person said anything but "great signal, sounding good on audio," so if I post that video it will cause some serious arguments which I am not ready to start with people. I also watched the ARRL table at hanfest test a Chinese HT and said it must be modified because it was cleaner than a Yaesu handheld. So some Chinese radios are not that bad.

OK....But I wouldn't trade my FT897d for it. KF7ZSA UPDATE......I bought one from MFJ Enterprises, TWO YEAR WARRANTY, $519.00......The internal battery, in the real world, will likely last at least 2 or 3 years but the warranty on their battery is only 3 months....MFJ tells me that a replacement battery is available for $47 but it's a hassle to do the work... With software version, current as of 03/19/2020, version 3.0.............comes with software upgrade cable, mic and mic cable, and power cable with bare battery-side leads. You will need to install your own connectors.... I'm liking it so far....

This is the Kind of stuff TenTec needs to be producing. If TenTec (or any manufacturer) would make an SDR, at least 10-20w, small like this but built for the outdoors and weather protected like the ReadySetGo.com radios, packable portable with everything self contained with CW bolts on the outside with some sort of tuner, then I would jump. The thing that holds me back from buying this radio is that it’s Chinese. Chinese in my mind is cheap junk. I would imagine it’s like a Harbor Freight Tools kind of cheap. Like it’s cheap but it’s a throw away Radio like the tools at Harbor Freight. Would I be right ?? Yaesu FT818 totally missed the mark. 6 watts lol. If they had produced a rig with 10-15 watts I would have pounced. 5 watts or 6 on SSB is a stretch at best. CW no problem. At home you can run a brick amp. Are Chinese Radios absolutely crap quality ? Who fixes it when it goes kaput ? Neat looking radio but is it quality ? Thanks for the video

Gregory Heath Chinese radios have made that kind of image, although this one is a little different. And Now MFJ is the exclusive US dealer and repair center so there is someone to repair it.... But yes, 818 missed the mark, this x5105 is in fact a game changer.

The price of this at $500 to $600 versus an Elecraft Kx2 at $700 seems pricey. I would expect Xiegu is not going to sell many at this price. It's Chinese and support, service etc are not going to be up to snuff.

Braden Glett The KX2 is $725 without their 60 dollar mic, 180 dollar ATU, 60 dollar battery, or 25 dollar charger. Suddenly we are over a grand. Don't get me wrong, I love my KX2, but compared to the Elecraft this thing is a bargain.
@RViscara
@RViscara 7 жыл бұрын
Braden Glett I have to agree with exhgztx above about price point to be fair the KX2 is awesome Radio and a cut above this Chinese Radio and I am a fan of the KX2 but to be fair the price is 725 minus that ATU/charger/battery/mic which to me what's the point if you still have to buy a battery and a pay for minimum a mic and a charger. You are up to 900 without the handy ATU to use which is built into the unit in a unit the same size as the KX2 that's a pretty fair difference. Granted I would expect a Chinese Radio to be competitive and maybe be down to 450 to 550 range to go up against Elecraft mind you that you are paying for some of the serious overhead of manufacturing in California and paying California taxes for the KX2 one of the reasons businesses are leaving my golden state in droves. Businesses here in California coast just can't compete anymore it's almost impossible and what is still designed here is stolen by the Chinese anyways so I hear you about the Chinese price should be lower by 10 or 15 percent. Yet we have to say the Chinese comes with all of those important items mic and charger and battery and the big one the ATU. So it's still a bargain if this company backs it up or it stands the test of time and use.

QRP HF radio Hello and 73 to you and others who made the points about standard equipment on the Xiegu vs optional on the KX2. I did realize the substantial difference in price on a apples to apples comparison, but at $650 for the Xiegu vs $1000 for the KX2, it doesn't seem like an easy decision. If the kx2 poops out, you can get it repaired - I wonder if that's true of the Xiegu? Anyway, I have never felt the need to pay through the nose for an Elecraft. I do own a youkits HB1-B radio from China and its great for $270 but only has four bands and does not have as many features. Now that was an easy decision to buy it, because it was so inexpensive, and had some features. I guess I am only saying that the decision is not as easy with the Xiegu vs the KX2. Regards.

power bug = deal breaker. too expensive for a 5 watt rig as well, think about it.You will have to add a lineer and all extras, by that time you can have a proper 100 watt radio for less and operate anywhere from the word go, any cabling that is not stationary will fail in the end, rendering your rig u/s.

To me, that's a problem. Have you never had power fail during transmit? How long have you been a ham? Crap happens: power supply fault, power failure, ooops - the power cord got yanked out. This is a stupid vulnerability!

Ok. Well, that's a little more reassuring. By the way, I just watched the video that you made about this rig. Good job making that QRP contact! Nice demo. Thank you. Time to write my letter to Santa :)

More unreliable, expensive to own junk. And, they are expensive when you consider the avg. wage in China to build such things is $12 per day. It should be much closer to $80, possibly slightly more, bu not $600!!!

Right, sure, because lots of fully featured HF/6m QRP rigs cost $80. I've been running Xiegu gear since 2015 and it's definitely not junk and it definitely is reliable.

Please tell me why you use the farcical expression "What's up" as a greeting? It doesn't make sense. Where on earth did you get it from?" It is an English colloquial saying which means 'What's wrong?" or "What's the matter?"... eg. "What's up with you?" ...What are you moaning/complaining about?" It may well follow a greeting but is not such, in itself. Perhaps it's a long standing American misuse of English, there are so many, but that doesn't make it valid. It's not a greeting!

"What's Up, Doc" was used many, many years ago and in recent Super Bowl commercials. It has no negative connotations. Same meaning as "What's Happening".

MauriatOttolink True, American English and British English have long since diverged but since this is slang American English from the 1940's (Bugs Bunny) and the presenter appears to be American, I fail to see why you are offended. I would guess that Australian English really sets you off. But this is all way off topic. Goodday, mate!

James Eagleson Hello James. Thanks for your reply which course I can't deny. You must have realised that I mistakenly assumed that you are American. Sorry. I know that the spellings, dialect etc will change.. It happens here but total change of meaning rattles me. "What's Up? " got up my nose ever since "What's up, Doc?" My knowledge of Ozzie expressions is way out of date, Digger. Fair Dinkum Blue is a bit post WW2. Do you still feel Krook when you are ill? Am I still a whinging £10, Pom? I think that you are still proud of Waltzing Matilda and certainly :-kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGOVhIOqeKuWoZo Do you still laugh at us when we Poms say "I'll have a good root?" (Told you that I was bit out of date!) I never watch Neighbours or Home & Away. Perhaps I should to catch up. Goodday, Cobber! From Olde Englande.. By the way..you type very well indeed, considering that you and your keyboard are upside down.

MauriatOttolink No, I am not Australian. Like most People in the U.S. I am a mixture - in my case from the Hebrides / Shetland Islands and Poland. My point in bringing up Australia was that language and meanings change over time and get "embellished". In my lifetime slang terms for "good" have include "bad", "slick", "hot", "cool", "wicked" and even some terms that I prefer not to use. Jim WB6JNN

James Eagleson, High James. AHA Well, I was right in the first place. It was your reference to Aussie expressions which threw me off the scent.. Yes...We've seen 'reverse' words like bad for good, etc. creep across the Atlantic and contaminate our language. I don't see the point. Cool was a logical jazz expression because West Coast jazz which followed Dixie or Chicago Jazz really and was clearly of a cool 'feel' as opposed to the earlier Hot Jazz. It was never intended as a mark of approval or quality! Another odd expression is referring to some item as "that bad boy!" Where that came from I have no idea. The snag is usually that some air-headed celebrity says something utterly stupid and all the equally airheaded devotees are so impressed that they want to sound "cool" and it spreads like wildfire. Obama had the incredible brass neck of complaining about English expressions invading the American language..cheek o' him! Mind you when I heard what they were, I suddenly agreed with Obama. I have to be careful moaning about 'Americanisms.' I got caught out with one which is English but long disused over here. I moaned about 'gotten' but it is older English taken over on the Mayflower.etc. He pointed out that we still say "Ill-gotten gains" and 'Forgotten". Hmmm I became embarrassedly silent! 'Fall' is English but we long ago shifted to Autumn which you also use. I'm now forced to be much more guarded in what I say. We have an expression "All Americanisms in English started after I was born!'' Another is "The difference between an American Gentleman and an English Gentleman is that the Limey thinks that a hundred miles is a long way but an American Gentleman thinks that a hundred years is a long time!" I was in QSO with a guy in Baltimore who was proud that his house was so old that it was a "listed" building. I asked how old and I said "I have collection of saxes which I play regularly and an American one (a Conn) is older than that!.... 1915." So what do you think of this little Chinese kit? The reviews all seem very positive. Amazing that there is a waiting list for kits or is the Chinese version readily available. I'll check you out on QRZ.com for a less exposed route. 73 M.O.L. (Not my callsign. Related to my Jazz activity.)
