There is no doubt that the West is exploiting its centuries-old dominion over the English language-based media. Conspicuously, the parties with the overwhelming advantage of the media can easily manipulate public thinking. They can decide what the people should know; and what they shouldn’t know by distorting or stifling news. They can make things out of nothing by fabricating falsehoods. Like magicians, they think they can turn black into white; and white into black depending on the plots. That said, even the most “inventive” journalism will come to nothing, or will peter out without the support of facts. To quote and unquote the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln: “You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.”

Honestly speaking, China's propaganda sucks and clearly needs improvements. Many people are skeptical about Chinese news, even when supported with actual data and statistics. However, American propaganda is the best. Many people willingly believe American propaganda, even when it's unsupported by evidence.

Its fascinating to see how all these former colonial and settler colonials states came together and can't stand the fact that a non white country is beating them without invading anyone and through a form of socialism. No way can u expect high speed rail network this extensive in a country like USA. i disagree with the "fair analysis" part of your comment. Daniel is not fair whatsoever. Daniel complains about racism in America and Canada after 9/11 towards muslims. Daniel says that it was racist for America's government agencies, such as the FBI, watching muslims more closely that were boarding airplanes. Daniel says that it was racist for the FBI to insert plants, undercover agents, in America's mosques to monitor muslims after 9/11. Daniel complains about how unsafe he felt in Canada and America after 9/11. The very same Daniel, says that the Uighar re-education camps are okay and they ARE ACTUAL HELPFUL for Uighars. So consider everything I just wrote and how Daniel feels it is racist for how America simply monitoring muslims after 9/11. Do you think Daniel would have the same opinions of the Uighar re-education camps if America was forcing its Muslim population to go into re-education camps? - like the difference is wild and its even more wild how Daniel refuses to mention any racism regarding the Uighar re-education camps.

I want to thank you, Daniel, for making think about this stuff. My interest in China, other than a very broad and shallow "how did they do that?" curiosity about their economic rise, was really only piqued properly by Trump and the whole focus on Huawei. It made me wonder what on earth a company that I'd never really heard about had done or was capable of doing. So that was the start and since then I've been trying to join up the dots. It has been quite a journey and there are still way more gaps than knowledge but thanks to people like you, Daniel, I am now aware of a US funding stream called the National Endowment for Democracy and someone called Adrian Zenz. Putting those two together is a very useful place to start in relation to piecing together where the narratives about Xinjiang stem from. Then try and understand how international media works, which is that something "reported" in one country (let's a say short update piece about "disappeared" Uyghurs on BBC radio news a few days ago UK) can then inform or corroborate ideas useful to the US administration (at, say, the G7 meeting in Cornwall). It is breathtaking. I have from time to time got very anxious at the sheer amount of goading that the CPC has been subject to by the US. Take the protests in Hong Kong. I am sure that the idea was to provoke the CPC into a repeat of the Tiananmen Square catastrophe. Only it didn't happen. Instead they used the rule of law. I take comfort from this as it feels like there are safety valves within the CPC. And the more I find out about China, the more astonished I am about how it works and what it achieves. And the more tragic this whole polarisation becomes.

Why are these young "activist" so silent when it comes to Loochoo. Loochoo under occupation has both human rights and environmental violations. Even Loochoo/Ryukyu/Okinawa under US and Japan occupation disliked and even protest against US bases build on their land. Native Loochooans do not see China as a threat and they hate America and Japan more. Loochoo is a stretch of islands including Okinawa, and they have a history of 3000 years and 200 years under occupation by Japan and US Military. The most "well known" of Loochoo history is the Ryukyu Kingdom to the outside world. Loochoo was discovered by the Chinese during the Qin Dynasty, where the First Emperor, Qin Shi Huang, heard about an island of immortal beings. He send envoys to Loochoo the learn the ways of the local people of longlevity. However, currently now, Loochoans suffer alot worse than anyone else in the world alongside palestine and hawaii, under occupation by US Military and Japan. Loochooans are humiliated by the Japanese government for speaking in their own language. Loochooans are loosing their own homes to illegal settlers and if Loochooans resist, the Japanese soildiers will break into their homes and drag them out and kill them. American soilders occupied Loochoo by stealing land and building their base there in highly populated civilian areas. Everytime there will be frequent accidents happening with the US Airforce Jets on the island. The debris land on schools , hospitals, houses and shops. Loochooan women and juvenile girls are constantly raped by US soildiers and if Loochooan men come to protect them, the soildiers will kill the whole family, and when the soildiers return home , they are scot free. Im not joking, you can look this up. For more info, you can check out Rob Kajiwara's channel on youtube and twitter. He is a native Loochooan activist and he cover this topics on his home. Ever wonder why you don't often hear it on the news, because western media has an agenda over China than true human rights. The bases are not there only to contain China but to also contain Loochoo independence. Loochoo-US Relations shows it is at the lowest peak, alot worse than North Korea, Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, Russia, and PRC combined. It is so bad, that America will try their best to censored out all Loochooan related news or deny their existence to the world. If Loochoo is independent today, it would be a prosperous democratic republic following the Singaporean way of governance. It will also be a financial trading hub for all East Asians and Southeast Asian countries. Loochoo could have it's independence after 1945. However, America rejected the demands of the locals. They are terrified that when they lose control of the current system, a new dominant power, in this case China, would want to exact revenge on them. They should genuinely ask themselves; why would Chinese citizens want war when they can live the good life just by working hard. The Chinese leaders have already stated that they do not want to play the role of America in the world. They prefer world peace. Why can't leaders of the West work with China to ensure world peace and stability? War is a curse on ordinary people.

Daniel, great talk as usual thanks. I have a couple of thoughts regarding this Xinjiang subject. Before I start, I am 100% in agreement with you, I just think this should be looked into. So firstly, on the question of "is there human rights abuses going on in Xinjiang?" One thing I think many people miss about this, is the cultural difference between China and the west. I'm NOT saying there are abuses going on, my thought is that it's just VERY easy for the west to film or photograph very ordinary things that happen in China and paint it as bad behaviour. For example, the uniforms. When the subject of forced labour comes up they often mention the uniforms the 'workers' (slaves) are forced to wear. This is clearly BS, fact is, in China people wear uniforms for all sorts of things, and in general take much more pride in their work than in the west. For example, the many many security guards in China that look like police, they're not, they just work at the shopping mall or bank, but if you thought they were police, they're everywhere. (Police state?? nope) Even the staff that stand on the platforms at metro stations, they behave like they are in the army, standing to attention, because they take their job seriously. Another thought I have re Xinjiang and the allegation of internment camps, I won't use the term the NED funded mob use. Many people including yourself have visited Xinjiang, like Jerry who has cycled thousands of miles there, and as soon as travel restrictions are over we will be going ourselves. Not to look for evidence of anything, but because we have always wanted to visit and see the amazing scenery, but rest assured I will share my experience, as I'm sure it will be a pleasant one. Anyway, what surprises me is that the forces in the west that are using this narrative to demonise China don't mention the fact that the XUAR is 4 times the size of Germany. You could go to an area that size every month for a year and never see anything, because the region is just too big. Going to the Grand Bazaar in Urumuqi and filming in the market doesn't really disprove anything. Again i'm NOT saying that these places exist, I believe the same as you, there are education centres, and an education program which is giving the people in the region an education so they can be a part of wider society instead of being so secular. I get it, I agree with what they are doing because I know the reasons for it, but I wish there was a way to show that there are no 'hidden camps' like people like ASPI constantly allege. It's like the one child policy, over here in the UK it's made out to be barbaric, but to me it was just a government taking action to stop problems occurring further down the line. Would they rather they just let all families have 3 babies and then starve? No western country has the population problems China has to deal with, and as far as I see no western country even understands China, the one thing they understand is they have to make their citizens look down on China, so they don't notice what their own governments are doing.

Many Chinese policies are pretty harsh and sometimes over the top, but they are effective. So if they look into ties between Uighurs inside XJ with foreign countries, innocent people will wrongfully fall under suspicion. But so will real terrorists or people susceptiple to terrorist propaganda be found. But is this genocide? Hell, no! It's just the West could never use the same methods, because of a different value system. About the second part, that Xinjiang is so big. You can simply travel to the locations that ASPI marked on satelite images and claimed to be "concentration camps". Many have already been debunked to be schools or factories. But you can look for yourself.

It's a combination of the *Red Scare* (fear of communism) and the *Yellow Peril* (fear of Asians taking over the West) mindset that's driving the Westerners to think badly about China. Since the 19th century, Westerners have grown so throughly accustomed to the notion of Western dominance, so much such that the very thought of a non-Western, non-liberal democratic country like China eventually surpassing the United States someday in the future, is simply too frightening for many Westerners to fathom.

China's propaganda machine is so strong internally as it is weak abroad, unfortunately. Without a radical improvement of Chinese diplomats' communication skills and better strategies against misinformation and fake news coming from the US, I fear China will be isolated in the upcoming years. One apparently small but in fact important example is the current policy towards international students applying to go study in China: there is no direct communication or official prospect on if and when foreign students will be allowed to enter in China (due to Covid-19), while all financial support for current foreign students enrolled in Chinese universities but stuck outside the country has been suspended. I talk from personal experience, as I am a student in a top level Chinese uni. Other countries are currently holding a similar stance (e.g. Australia), but their communication on the issue is so much better than China's, unfortunately, and they never stopped providing financial support for their full time students who are forced to study online due to Covid. While the appeal of Chinese universities was steadily growing in the past decade, I really think that the way the are handling this issue will be a powerful blow to their image and future ability to attract foreign students, with consequent damage to China's diplomacy and soft power. I'd be happy to be wrong, but Covid gave China's critics a very strong weapon and China is not doing the best work to deflect their attacks, in my opinion.

Target audience is the western world whose market to which the bulk of China's exports go to. The hope here is to incite hate such that a voluntary boycott on Chinese' produce by ordinary people there and for western investors will shun China and have minimal or no business dealings with China. Another is the Muslim world particularly the Middle East region. US has seen how easily they can be galvanize and called into action(terror attacks) to infractions (real or perceived) towards their religion & fellow adherents, hence the strong emphasis on the word 'Muslim' it their official statements & speeches, and in narrative of their media.

With respects to filming in a bookstore; at least in the usa, amazon has gone into small stores that specialise in one or a few things. Say a kid's toy store. Amazon would itemise and build an inventory (at no direct cost to the shop and giving them some kind of ‘shortcut’ of doing business); then amazon carries similar or identical product and sell it to people based off of their location+interest (effectively squeezing that shop's patron base by incentivising patrons with cheaper prices). All of this is to say that the bookstore wants to protect its inventory from theft. Or that Time, one (if not the most) of the most expensive things, has gone into formulating that inventory. The owner has figured out what sells and what doesnt sell and amazon is taking it for a low low sum while gaining market traction in another sector. Just FYI.

@@HKChineseCanadian Well, I think that we're all saddened when innocent people (especially children) are killed in war. The Palestinian Arabs obviously didn't think about innocent Jewish men, women and children when they fired 4,700 rockets indiscriminately at Israel in 12 days of conflict. Sometimes when trying to kill the terrorists in Gaza, children were nearby and they fell in this conflict.

@@miachlmyersdonutz1344 It's true. They fired well-over 4,000 rockets during this last skirmish, and some of these rockets were intercepted by Israel's "Iron Dome," while others simply missed their targets and landed in open-fields. You are, obviously, uninformed, and you seem to praise ignorance.

Excellent talk, I will use this video to help me better inform people in my close circle of family and friends. I have experienced the difficulty in trying to convince people to accept even basic provable facts and information about China that is contrary to the main stream media, so my goal here is modest but still difficult.

Hahaha Daniel you're still so disingenuous....You specifically can't shed your bias, because that would require you to shed your entire "brand". You're mission is " how can I get my kids to be proud to be Chinese", and you've adopted a "west is bad" narrative from Max Blumenthal. Dude maybe take your dad's advice...

What kind of gibberish are you even talking about? Instead of providing factual evidence to back up your statements, you default to attacking someone's character and making assumptions about someone's motivations in life. You certainly sound a lot like someone who simply doesn't have any evidence to have a substantive argument or debate, and you are just been resentful that your own narrative and beliefs have been been undermined.

Do you have any legitimate arguments or facts, or are you just desperate and only capable of resorting to insults? So weak smh.

Another well argued, well reasoned and well articulated piece from Daniel. I follow all the China domiciled youtubers. I have to say I find this channel to be regularly the most well researched, substantive, cogent and persuasive.
