Hard plastic protects better when crashing sliding along a surface. Get material grips the surface and rips a few layers of your skin off. See my review of the Leatt 3DF.

Is you're front covered anywhere else than the top front shoulder...? like you're stomach for example...what if you got hit there with the stick instead of the back?

It's different, from what I understand Kevlar is a very strong fiber that is woven to make bulletproof vests, so they're meant to prevent penetration, meanwhile, d3o is a foam-like pad that absorbs impact from falls.

That's pretty cool thanks for the review. What about a rib guard? Is there a jacket that has that? Is there a legs version? When you get hit with that baseball bat, does the whole back plate harden such that it feels like getting hit with a large fly swatter? Or does only a "verticle strip" harden so it feels like getting hit with a much "fatter" baseball bat...so it doesn't hurt your spine as much? If you punch fast, will the elbow pad harden and slow your arm?

I imagine the whole area that the baseball bat hit hardens as well as areas around it, distributing the force, and since it’s so incredibly soft, the inner molecules that don’t take such force are less hard so they also cushion and slow the impact. Ingenious design.

James Wilkins although it wont stop a bullet it could make it to were the bullet does not bruise you when hit with a vest on.

This stuff looks too good to be true-- almost like a miracle material that is sorely being under-utilized. With the rash of concussions occurring in the NFL, why the hell are they not using this material in helmets and shoulder pads? What about in automobiles? And how about body armor for the military? If this stuff can absorb and deflect impact so incredibly well, it should at least be studied for greater purposes. Perhaps they already are,.

UNDER a bullet proof vest meaning if you add that extra layer of protection on top of it. I'd imagine this would help minimize the impact of the bullets which is still felt even if the bullet penetration is stopped by the kevlar.
