An educational video about Xishan jiu ge (西山酒歌), a genre of traditional drinking songs from Chencang District (陈仓区), a predominantly rural district of Baoji (宝鸡市), western Shaanxi province (陕西省), northwest China. In the context of this genre's name, "Xishan" (西山, literally "Western Mountains") refers to the mountainous region that surrounds the Chencang District of Baoji, which is located in western Shaanxi province.
Filmed in Chencang District (陈仓区), Baoji (宝鸡市), western Shaanxi province (陕西省), northwest China, c. 2006, and released in July 2006.
Among the performers featured in this video is Mr. Lu Hong (逯鸿, b. 1965), a native of
Maojiazhuang Village (毛家庄村), Fenggeling Town (凤阁岭镇), Chencang District (陈仓区), Baoji (宝鸡市), who holds the status of District-Level and Municipal-Level Representative Inheritor/Transmitter of the Intangible Cultural Heritage item of Xishan jiu ge. After years of hard study and constant exploration, Lu mastered the singing and narrative skills of Xishan drinking songs, and has a repertoire of more than 30 drinking songs. Lu is also the leading performer of the Xishan Jiu Ge Yanchangtuan (西山酒歌演唱团), and has helped to organize and train more than 20 performers of this art form.
Also featured is Mr. Yang Zhijun (杨志军), the Deputy Director of the Chencang District, Baoji Culture, Cultural Relics, and Tourism Bureau (宝鸡市陈仓区文化文物旅游局副局长), who has worked to protect and promote this art form.
Xishan jiu ge may be performed either a cappella or accompanied with traditional string, wind, and/or percussion instruments. The songs have strong regional characteristics and their lyrics (which may be improvised) are often humorous in nature, with some also having an educational function. There are at least 20 different kinds of Xishan jiu ge, with many having specific functions or social contexts, being sung at weddings, when friends gather, to celebrate a harvest or the New Year, or to congratulate an elderly person on their birthday, etc. For funerals, Xishan jiu ge can only be sung beginning with the third anniversary of the person's death.
In 2007 the tradition of Xishan jiu ge, centering on Chencang District, Baoji, was included in the First Batch of the Shaanxi Province Province-Level Intangible Cultural Heritage List (陕西省第一批省级非物质文化遗产名录).
Additionally, in 2008 the tradition of Xishan jiu ge was included in the First Batch of the Chencang District, Baoji Intangible Cultural Heritage List (宝鸡市陈仓区第一批非物质文化遗产名录).
The tradition of Xishan jiu ge, centering on Chencang District, Baoji, was also included in the First Batch of the Baoji Intangible Cultural Heritage List (宝鸡市第一批非物质文化遗产名录).
The fact that Xishan jiu ge are not transmitted in a formal manner has made it challenging to document and safeguard this tradition. Nevertheless, since the early 21st century significant efforts have been made to document, record, publish, and publicize these songs, as well as to encourage performances thereof.
