One thing I once did was something I called a "supercritical chicken farm", which consisted of chickens growing up in a long glass tube filled with cob webs and then falling through multiple smaller glass (filled with cobwebs) tubes with hoppers at the bottom, more eggs per chicken, than you need to produce one chicken, before getting killed by foxes with looting III swords. This farm just automatically produces more and more chickens, until it reaches the speed of the dispenser producing chickens.

15:30 Xisuma, you might be able to add a Jeb Door or Block Swapper mechanism to break the shulker boxes when they're dispensed with no block under them. Any kind of piston extension should work too.

A version of the ender chest that allows hoppers to pull from it would be a game changer for mass farm collections like this. Chunk-load the one at your storage system and just go around dumping shulkers into the paired one.

Since the boxes can't be opened anyway, maybe the filled shulker selling setup could be made into a vending machine? Put it all behind glass with labels, eject the shulker into a water stream that carries it to a hopper. Sorta like those 'corkscrew' snack machines. That might be cool.

With the shop design and the dispenser, you can use a double piston extender, extend the bottom one in the neutral position, extend the top one to break the box then retract both to dispense the shulker and reextend the bottom one

I recently made my own chicken farm. A bed of hoppers covered in carpet to collect the eggs, fed into a single auto-dispenser that spams the eggs into an open 5x5 slab floor. The babies can move around and thus not worry about entity cramming. Attached to the machine is an item-expiration pressure plate that fires every 5 minutes for 10 seconds, causing the ceiling in the box to smash down just long enough to kill any adults. I left it at that, but I could easily expand on it later (sorting system, toggle-able cooker, etc).

Fun idea X, you can use chicken eggs to make a 1-shot wither rose farm that doesn't require a wither cage. You go below the bedrock portal in the end, and summon a wither there normally. 3 blocks below where the wither is summoned, dispense 1000-2000 chickens. Before you summon the wither, splash poison them so they're on 0.5 hearts, and the explosion from summoning the wither will finish them off. Then you just kill the wither as normal.

The redstone shopping contraption seems like a lot of fun to build. I think it might be a bit tedious to deal with as a customer though, vs just being able to quick flick through boxes. I might be missing the point though.

You could prevent the baby chicks from cramming by having them stand in a vine on top of a wall. You would probably need to clip the hopper minecart inside the wall to pick the drops up, though.

You forgot one thing in your calculations about max entity cramming and baby chickens. The hitbox of baby chickens is much smaller than a block, such that 4 groups of baby chickens can occupy a block, one in each corner of the block. But, probably best to play it safe.

I only recently removed that old school chicken farm from my base. It gave me many years of handy drops, and was my first sustainable form of food. The noise was driving me mad though so I swapped it out for pork. Still, thank you for the build.

Good job explaining the maths. I've been working on building a chicken farm with my younger cousins and they keep asking great detailed questions that I haven't been able to explain well enough. You helped complete the logic. I'm excited to share it with them and see what they take away from your explanation! Also FYI we're on bedrock and the hitbox problem with the chickens pathfinding is actually more severe on bedrock. When one chicken grows up, it will bump into the other baby chickens and they'll touch the lava and all end up dying. The solution we found was to put the hopper behind the dispenser to fully seal around the hatchery.

I love that people were commenting on Impulse's video about how it could be a problem that you and Gem are both selling Prismarine when you're doubling Impluse on stuff like Shulker Shells and Froglights. It's also ignoring that Grian and the log shop have been doubled up for most of the season on logs.

I have a chicken farm re-hatcher in my spawn chunks that I had to clean up every so often once the framerate starts tanking. Having it feed them in to a lava hatchery instead would be an improvement.

Xisuma, what if for the piston and shulker box shop idea, you had a selection of shulker boxes that you can't open to see what's inside, and each have different items inside, similar to Grian's mystery box idea from back in S7? The customer picks the box they want and the piston breaks it from below and they pick it up to receive their goods.

Lol! I just did this in my world like a week ago. what a coincidence! While mine might have been faster, it was super uninteresting and simple. I just made a normal compact chicken farm, except the adults didn't get killed. The eggs would just cycle back through and the chickens would exponentially grow. I also placed a ladder to prevent lag and entity cramming.

If you use a fox holding a fire aspect sword to kill them, you might be able to stuff it into a single hatchery with a vine to pass max entity cramming. Then you could also give the fox's sword looting 3 to get more drops

X, for the ice farm... don't you have an exp bottle system hooked up to repair your pick? If you do then maybe a slightly longer stop and more bottles dispensed to repair the pick... if not then it's a really good idea to get on asap.

x, more than 24 chickens can fit in one block due to the size of their hitbox so you can have several groups of 24 in each block
