I think, for the most part, we don’t have an opportunity to get these knives in hand before we purchase them. We look at them online and then we purchase them. Not having them, or the opportunity to have them in hand is extremely frustrating sometimes when we get what we purchased in the mail. In the old days, as I remember it, we could go to a local store and actually feel the knife in hand before we purchase them. That is so different from today. I live in a state where our population is very low so The opportunity to have a Knife store local where we can actually pick one of these beauties up is just not so.

@NaturalSynthetic777 There were! PVK for example was in Las Vegas and sold mid to high end knives. They still exist online and do have some kind of storefront but not like it used to be. There were also local mom and pop stores that would sell knives as well, but with the ability to sell online more and more they all went away

So true. When I moved to SoCal in the late 80s, there were some type of knife store at many malls. Then they all started vanishing. Generally, the malls they were in leases got too expensive of the mall became a ghost mall. The last knife store I frequented was Plaza Cutlery in Costa Mesa, CA, at a very high end mall, South Coast Plaza. Their lease must’ve been super expensive in addition to political correctness starting to over shadow the area. During my travels since, I see that most knife stores are now in the south. The coastal regions of the country are just too foo foo now.

The Roosevelt XL was created using the "Scale and keep proportions" option but it should have been shorter from the top to bottom to make it a bit more streamlined while keeping the longer length. I think it would look much nicer. A little more thought in the design would have gone a long way.

So nice...SO nice... to hear someone judge Strider on it's quality and reliability and not all the Man's past "sins". How many makers (Cold Steel, Medford, Hinderer, etc.) have been judged by other than the product of their skills. Enough already!!! If the best knives makers are "Boycotted" cuz of their mistakes, fact is; a lot of industry designers have historically had questions of their past. Their products can still be Stellar!!⚡

I love these type videos on midtech/custom knives; there's not enough of them. I totally get you too. I have some knives that after some time I've realized the price I paid wasn't worth it to me. But @ table price or higher, it may be worth it to someone else. You just don't know if you'll love a knife until you've handled it for a while and it's part of the love affair we have, always seeking another knife that will blow our socks off. Each new purchase is a gamble but I always factor into the equation if it has resale value or not. Personally, I don't like the aesthetic of the Rosie and I've never owned any, although the XL did spark some interest originally when it came out. But there's just too many other knives I rather get. Love your takes man! Cheers.

My opinion, Strider for example is unique, they have a unique look to them you could black out a picture of one and still tell by the shape that it’s an SMF or an SNG same with Emersons and Hinderers. A lot of “modern” knives all look the same you can’t hardly tell between a Chinese titanium framelock or an actual midtech sometimes there’s a bunch of brands out there now, basically they have no character. Also Striders, Emersons, Hinderers have a track record for being used in harsh conditions, Emerson and Strider especially, I carry a Strider on duty wether at the fire station or at my reserve unit and done training operations with them used em and its what I trust my life to. YMMV.

what appeals to a lot of people is the legacy that a design holds. There are incremental improvements in quality and design that a knife like the Roosevelt holds over the SnG, but like you do in the video, the Strider holds a whole story behind it, a significant change in the industry. Oz doesn't have such a thing quite yet, maybe because he hasn't been around for as long as Strider has been. Who knows, maybe in 10 years people will speak of Oz with the same reverence as do with Chris Reeve or Rick Hinderer now.

I agree it depends on when you got into knife collecting. If you were collecting during the overbuilt rugged trend knives now just don’t hit the same. Also overseas companies have stepped their game up big time. So like you said many of these knives appear the same w/o handling them. There’s also the trend of knife designers vs knife makers. Great time to be a knife collector but I do miss some of the knives from a few years ago.

What turned me onto the Rosie was learning about the innovation of the detent system. It also has the best ergos of any knife I’ve even owned. Love how it puts your hand right behind the edge and gives you ultimate control. To each their own though, I get what you’re saying. It doesn’t yet have the full brand story and cache of CRK, Hinderer, Strider, etc.

Collecting anything is madness (as you say) whether it be knives, guns, coins, cars, etc. Everything I purchase is used until it fails me then it may or may not be replaced. While I worked my tail off my entire life for my family's well being I had to live within my means. The only thing I have ever collected is bills and I'm not talking about currency. I'm happy for those who are able to collect things and I enjoy watching their excitement as they share that enjoyment with us. Peace and prosperity to everyone throughout the upcoming new year.

Striders have absolutely no appeal to me, but that’s the beauty of the hobby. Everyone likes what they like and that’s due to so many factors. I'm not at this level yet, but I look at these knives a lot. Prices may be similar, I see these as different type knives and I wouldn't expect the same experience from them. I put Oz in a group with Koenig, Craig Brown, and maybe Rob Johnson. With Strider it's Medford, Hinderer, and Spartan. I tend to put CRK in both groups. Sorry if I missed the point of the vid. I got lost a couple of times.🥴

The oversized thumb hole on the full flat ground blade gives me an impression of major weakness. I guess this was a design point motivated by aesthetic concerns over performance concerns. By comparison the Strider hole is half the size and goes through the flat on the saber grind. It's functional: they put flair into plenty of other areas such as blade grinds, etches, CNC patterning etc. I know you're not supposed to use a cutting tool for prying etc but it happens and blades with half the mass taken out of the flex point will snap quite easily. Ergo the Strider might actually work for prying open a treasure chest. The other one will snap and the tip might hit someone in the eye. Best get rid of it.

Sometimes things just don't seem to "click", when you're holding your newest item in hand. As an example, I fell madly in love with a plain Spartan Harsey Folder, although the design didn't really speak to me in the beginning. On the other hand, I didn't like the Sebenza 31, which I still consider the more elegant design. That's my 2 cents on the matter 😅

The Strider looks the coolest by far imo. But I don't like the pivot that takes two tools and don't they have bad lock-up geometry? Also has no steel insert and the middle of the knife around the pivot looks thinned out and week. Maybe it's fine, all these other people chimed in to say they are tough people who carry them in tough conditions... perhaps they are comparing it a much cheaper knife they had before? IDK. I'd take the Kunwu out of all the ones you showed but not in an Axis lock! That's a whole different discussion tho! Cheers.

Nailed it. My collection is as small as it has ever been. I never had much interest in what I call gimmicks. Or doing stupid human tricks, even in the 80s when butterfly knives were THE one hand openers. I bought a small boot knife around 1984. Because of the redundancy in folding knives my focus is now on mid size fixed blades. I like the custom aspect of getting a knife the way I want it and supporting the maker. Kydex was a total game changer for me. I have been a fan of Crawford, Krein, Dozier, Polkowski and Bud Nealy for decades. My favorite maker currently making very affordable, hell for stout fixed blades is Greg Moffatt. I'm definitely in the hobby for the people now.

Things are being sold at table right now because the market has tanked. I cant sell anything for anywhere close to table. But im not selling super high end American made i guess. Just normal $200-$300 name brand stuff. I only got into the knife community 3 or 4 years ago. I love action and fidgeting. I also like using my knives and bang for my buck. If i could play more in the $1000 territory i would. Id love an XL Rosie. I never thought about a knife company "representing" something. I actually hate Striders. The whole stolen valor thing just rubs me the wrong way. But besides that, i had a Performance Series SnG and i thought it was terrible...one of the worst knives ive ever had. Hoback is a douche too and i liked his knives. I think it all comes down to this...to each his own. We find joy in the things we find joy in, simple as that.

I have eased my way back in by trying a few of the new breed with flippers, bearings, different locking systems and was left underwhelmed. The knives I thought I wanted were CRK. I bought two. They really didn't do anything for me. They just felt awkward and didn't have the aura they did for me back in the day. I sold them and purchased some brand new Spydercos that I never owned before. I am very impressed with the quality, action, fit and finish, and materials. I love the Compression Lock. I have a Bodacious, Military 2 and Sage 5 (both in Cobalt Blue G-10 and Spy-27). Spyderco was my first love when it comes to the modern folder. When Black G-10 and ATS-34 was the thing to have I loved those early Spyderco and Benchmade. I'm with you. Personally I think it's a two fold problem. 1) all those things we used to consider premium materials are readily available in budget knives because we didn't seem to understand that knife makers were always buy ng those parts from China anyhow and now China is making the whole knife. 2) the clean line aesthetic and 3D patteringing that has caught on in knife making thanks to CNC machining is kind of boring and again also readily available at the same quality from China.
