Fun fact : Tchaikovsky never heard his 1812 overture with *perfectly-timed* cannon shots. As a matter of fact, cannons back then used black powder and are very much unreliable as to when it would go off as there are delays. It was not until 1897 and the advent of the French 75mm field gun that the bang could be perfectly and reliably timed with the overture.
@OtterTreySSArmy3 жыл бұрын
That's not true as the Prussians invented modern artillery as we know it around the 1870s. They were breech loaded and used compressed black powder and percussion. They'd go off like 98% of the time. In fact, it was the Prussian use of these Krupp-made field artillery pieces that allowed for the decisive defeat of the French in the Franco-Prussian War of 1871, leading to the founding of a united Germany as we know it today.

Amazing rendition considering this is a military band with half of the instruments (used in the original score) missing. The Japanese are an impressive people in so many ways particularly in things precise. I'm usually brought to tears by this overture - since childhood. I don't know why this is but my skin becomes goose-pimpled too. Yet even with so many instruments missing this rendition affected me in this way - the cannons are secondary in this effect but compound the initial effect. Well done Japan and this Military band. This is the only rendition I've heard where the cannons actually kept tempo with the piece. The first few were a bit off, but the volleys after that were spot on, every beat. That last volley was so in sync it sounded like one cannon, not 4. Kudos to the artillery team. I imagine they had to train the signallers to keep tempo, then adjust for the delays between the pulling the lanyard and the sound actually issuing.

Well, they are Japanese uniforms. Ever since the Imperial uniforms of the Imperial Japanese Forces were replaced by JSDF uniforms influenced by the USA after WWII, they (the Japanese) have been developing and updating their uniforms based upon the post-1945 lines. And, although highly unique in many ways, Japan rates as one of the most western nations on earth when considering factors like economics, fashion, engineering, military, etc. Alongside Singapore, Taiwan and Australia, Japan is one of the most western nations in the Asia-Pacific (hence the rising tensions with the PRC and the DPRK). That, and most NATO-observer nations also use NATO weapons and ammunition standards - which the 105mm Howitzer is a NATO standard piece, albeit US designed.

Everyone is memeing the cannons. Meanwhile I discovered the captions have the lyrics... Fascinating...
@AgnesIona4 жыл бұрын
Tchaikovsky used several traditional/well-known patriotic hymns and folk tunes in the Overture. The lyrics are translations of some of the corresponding lines. I believe that Tchaikovsky originally wrote it for choir, organ (one of those fancy ones loud enough to be heard across town), full orchestra, at minimum of one band, church bells, and cannons. And I might be forgetting something. It was meant to be played in the town square. I have a recording of a rendition of one that tries to it the 'original' way...and it is indescribably awesome. The weirdest part for me was that real church bells have that "vibrating sound" after they ring that changes pitch/tone (or whatever the musicians call it) as they "cool off" and Tchaikovsky wrote that into the music so it creates this overwhelming sensation of an unconstrained musical explosion and implosion.

It is an endlessly complex piece about being at war, the good,, the bad,, the fighting and in between times. It interweaves Russian and French folk music as well as patriotic music and traditional calls. And makes it work seamlessly together and is still being played and appreciated today. But, sure, it's a "meme piece". And this band plays it amazingly. Including having the cannons go off at the right time in the piece. Most orchestra/bands who do it are like... eh... just shoot 'em off whenever. This was awesome! And for better or worse it became the most popular of his pieces because of one man. Arthur Fielder.
