Thank you for walking me through your problem solving process and mindset. My ac clutch only engages when the engine bay is cold.

Just watched you do what I'm pretty sure I need to do to mine. But it was a lot easier just watching you do it and not doing it myself.

i have a 2001 jeep xj and ive found it was an electrical issue. Now it blows cold for the first few minutes but once it warms up the ac clutch does not spin anymore. Now i plan on using the penetrating oil and probably take a shim out. Thank you boss.

I had the same problem with my 04 trailblazer. They don’t sell a replacement clutch for it so I made my own shim. I used a neodymium magnet and ground a washer on my bench grinder. It has been working great for a year.

Yep, sometimes you just have to improvise a bit.

.4 - .8mm for Sanden SD7 You check it with dial gauge for recessed gap. If the gap is bigger than .8 what will happen when you turn on the AC with the engine at operating temp the clutch may skip before fully engaging (chirp and/or squeal). Once the gap gets close to 1.3mm it won't pull in at all.

I have a question. I am trying to diagnose the same problem (ac works and clutch engages when cold but then gets warm after a few minutes and clutch does not engage and blows hot air). I pulled the Clutch Relay and am trying to jump it like you did. I can get the power at 30 (with a test light) but there is no metal in the 87 (middle)slot like you have. If I put it in 87A the jeep acts as if the ignition was switched to the "ON" position. The rest do nothing. Any thoughts??

If it engages when cold, something is changing as it warms up. I would try jumping the low pressure switch after the clutch disengages. Sounds like you are losing pressure as it is running.

@@AxlesGarage Thank you for responding so quickly. I went back and watched the prior video and it turns out I was testing the wrong spot in the clutch relay. I switched testing spots and it worked/clicked as it should. I then proceeded to pull the clutch and clean it like you did and removed the shim. Put it all back together and It seems to be working now all the time. I need to go on a longer ride to confirm but all seems to be functional now. I even turned the XJ off and then back on and it popped right back on. Turned the AC on and off with the XJ running and same thing. THANK YOU. Great video with good simple explanations. On another note I am having an issue with the cooling system boiling over through the overflow tank once the XJ is tuned off. The XJ runs perfectly fine otherwise, never overheats while driving, can sit and idle and temps are perfect. The mechanical fan works and the e-fan works as it should. I did a compression test and all cylinders are even and strong. It is not leaking coolant anywhere anytime except when it boils over. I put a pressure test cap on the radiator and pumped it to 15psi and sometimes the needle drops quickly and other times it holds, no idea why. The boilover only happens sometimes not everytime. Any thoughts would be great.

Ha, he said “Jeep, everything’s rusted”. No Crap, that’s what happens when they’re still being daily driven to 300K miles! Ha😀😀
