What you didn't explain was ports - how many ports does a tree consume?

How or where would you define a tree-topper such as a star e.g. those that come with the Boscoyo minitrees ? Particularly if its pixels were connected onto the end of the strings being used for the main tree. Thanks

Tim Lister create a star model and chain its start channel to the end of the tree. Eg something like star2 start channel would be >tree2:1

Thanks Keith, that makes sense. I could then presumably make a group of the tree+star if I wanted effects to apply to them both.

Would I just use the spiral tree for wrapping a real tree? It would be like a tree but more like a column?

You could ... especially if it was just the trunk. You can also set the bottom to top ratio to 1 which means it wont narrow.

Very useful info, but I'm curious what happens if I use this technique to decorate a real tree -- for instance, if I use the spiral model, and I'm spiraling the light strings around an actual tree that isn't perfectly shaped, i.e., I'll have non-linear numbers of pixels per "row" -- how hard will it be (or is it even possible) to account for that in software or config parameters later, to make the sequence patterns look right?
