By the time I had discovered Xmal Deutschland via the 1987 album Viva. The end war nigh. The Siouxsie comparisons can't stop this iconic German band from being visually and musically enigmatic. Dark brooding and beautiful. Anja, Manuela & Fiona goth-girl power of another level. God I wish I had seen them live.

I was a Goth in the UK in the mid-late 80s. Saw Xmal live a few times. They were definately a Goth band or, if you will, had an overall Goth following / fan base. Same crowd who went to see Siouxsie, The Cure, Alien Sex Fiend, Sisters of Mercy, Sex Gang Children ....

Great combo...Manuela Rickers was a kickass guitarist, Wolfgang Ellerbrock & Peter Bellendir just roared everything forward with the bass & drums...and then there was Anja, growling teutonically, soaring & swooping, just unbelieveably superb!

A primeira vez que ouvi esta música, na minha adolescência, foi mágico. Inspirava-me as mais belas imagens. Assim o gótico oitentista internacional simplesmente loclupetou minha imaginação. Mágico, encantador, sombrio, melancólico, mas muito, muito divertido e emocionalmente profundo.

Thanks for sharing. I'd seen the Xmal Deutschland logo/patch on a few goth girls here and there in the '80s (ca. 1984-88) but never bothered to investigate what the draw was for this-and many other-dark denizens of the deep. At least KZbin allows me to plunge into the depths, even if only 30 years later... cough cough ...get off my lawn! =)

+Keith Bate I'm a MASSIVE Lush fan. I saw them only twice but wasn't as fan of them back then as I am now, which I can't explain. I rediscovered them in 2007, thanks the internet. And yeah, each and every decent 1990 young man had to feel "a bit of a thing" for both Miki and Emma since these girls just had it all, music wise, look wise, mind wise and whatever.

+julosx Well that period late 80's/early 90's was choke full of great bands eg REM, Pixies, Throwing Muses, Dead can Dance, Husker Du, House of Love , Nirvana, X mal, Cocteau Twins, Mazzy Star, Wall of Voodoo etc etc. saw all of these except Nirvana and that list includes the best bands I have ever seen. And I am still a regular gig goer 25 years later. Funny you mentioned Manuela Rickers . That women was "sex on legs " for me (LOL)

It seems that at a glance, more than any of the underground genres, Goth and it's associated acts really had a hand in laying the foundations for women musicians in underground music. I'm more from the Punk/Hardcore and Metal side of things so I can't confirm this but relative to those genres which for the most part were male dominated for years Goth seems to have showcased the talents of women musicians more throughout the 80's.
