Ofc it is mafex wins figure vs figure comparisons EVERYTIME(no bias just someone looking at a figures articulation and paint aps) but for ~$75-$150(people who don’t use import sites and pay scalpers or comic shop up charges they might be paying this for imports)WITH NO EFFECTS is insane even basic jean grey had effects and even the wolverine mafex for how hood it is gets shit on for not having more effects for its price and this jean tops that now. For marvel legends it might be less superior on paint aps BUT they have actually improved the articulation quite a bit and to make up for it you get that sick base(who isn’t gonna display it with that base!???)it’s a no brainer marvel legends here especially with that price of $50 people are just going to buy this figure JUST for the base and then use the mafex jean. Clear must have and winner is ML here there’s no debate

Thank-you for a great review of the figures. You brought up some really good points for both figures. I love the whole Mafex Jean Grey/Phoenix hands down. The face sculpts, paint job, body form of a healthy woman(no need for her to be overly sexualized like the ML body), her costume looks amazing too. Basically, a very respectful version, a much more natural version, without the heavy make-up/demonic face. Mafex wins for the Jean Grey/Phoenix figure alone. Legends also wins for the Phoenix bird accessory by itself.

I gotta say Mafex has its advantages...articulation....accessories....extra hands etc. but Hasbro has been upping it's game and damn.....it's getting harder and harder to justify the cost of imports.......I'll still go Mafex hands down when it comes to figures who need soft goods like Gambit or the comic Magneto......Hasbro versions of those characters can't even compete.......but for the price difference alone....in this case Hasbro did a nice job here I don't think I can make an argument for spending the extra money and that fire effect just seals the deal for me....great review/comparison Manny still owning the game brother

I totally agree, I am thinking about getting the Mafex Magneto and Storm figures for my X-men collection being I can pick em up for around $75. The Mafex Psylocke figure was well worth the extra cost as well. Looking forward to the future of both lines. Hasbro actually has the best headsculpt and face print that surpass all 6 inch toy companies now. But their bodies are usually reuse which suck a bad time. Hasbro's Phoenix has better Jean Grey headsculpt and paint but Mafex's is better overall.

In Japan, that Marvel Legends Phoenix goes for anywhere between 9000yen and 14000 yen, which is significantly pricier than the Mafex version, at retailers. With that and the fact that dollars and euro are significantly higher in value than yen has been for the past two years, buying the Mafex figure for 8500yen, which is what it's sold for here in Japan, brings the price of figure down to around 55 dollars. It's a tough competition because Mafex figures feel much better in hands and last a lot longer than most Marvel Legends figures in general. As a Japanese citizen, the Mafex version is a clear winner, yet the Marvel Legends one is probably a better deal for westerners.

Thanks Xmanny. Your video is exactly what I needed. I have the Select Phoenix force with the old ML Phoenix. When both companies announced pre-orders for both I was interested. Reviewing both side-by-side has gone a long way in determining which company has made the better one. Although the ML is very attractive, the Mafex paint and sculpt makes it a pretty even race. It's all going to come down to the freaking flaming bird. You have both the Select and the ML - which one do you prefer? "$50 freakin dollars, paint it" should be on your t-shirt the next time you interview the ML team!

They both have positives and negatives. I think the green is much more accurate on the Mafex and the hair screams Jean Grey. However, she's double the price and doesn't include any worthwhile accessories like the Hasbro one does. I do like how the boots and gloves are sculpted on the Mafex, but Hasbro's has a slightly more accurate pheonix emblem on the chest (both are inaccurate though as the emblem is supposed to be smaller, but her emblem did not cover her breats, whereas the Mafex has it placed right on them. I think I might just go with Hasbro's and then if I come across the Mafex at a convention I'll look at her in person to see if I feel she is really worth it.

The ML Pheonix stand is sooo bad ass, It's the reason it's $50 and why I want 2... Probably going to display 3 Dark Pheonix figures in my collection. The Mafex version is just a better design and a prettier figure IMO looks like she was ripped right out the comics. It's a tough call. They both have their ups and downs. I like both for different reasons. I like the gold paint. The sculpted boot, and glove cuff details. I prefer the comic book looking face on the Mafex, but the open mouth head looks like she's annoyed. For Marvel Legends I like the price, Pheonix Force, flame accessories, and athletic skin tight body sculpt. I don't like the faces. They are a bit too real for me.

lowkey im adoring the marvel legends. pretty and the colors pop more to me than the mafex, for some reason. the mafex is comic accurate, sure. but its bright and the gold and lime like color blends in more and makes it not pop out to me. marvel legend’s gold and dark green just appeal to me way more. plus the hair has highlighting AND a black wash :p ofc its also more affordable for me so… marvel legends wins for me. this is one of those “aesthetics > accuracy” moments for me. marvel legends absolutely WINS with its aesthetics

Great comparison. I think the Mafex torso is slightly wider and slightly shorter. They're about the same height up to around hip level, but Mafex is slightly shorter at the shoulder. Love the gold paint on the Mafex. Initial pictures made me kinda doubtful, but it looks so great in your video. The head sculpts really are a toss-up. I like them both. You're kinda making me wish I hadn't cancelled my Mafex pre-order after I made the one for the Legends... Was lucky to get the Legends for $35 on BBTS and it seems like they're going to honour the pricing mistake. Where is that flame base you used for the Mafex at the end from?

Personally Marvel Legends at that price is not worth it. The mafex one looks far more like how Byrne drew Jean and it bothers not making her boots just a painted job and sculpting it. The phoenix base for the deluxe version is awesome but it is not worth the extra 25 dollars. If the figure was 35 dollars like it was for the first few hours then sure, but at 50 hell no. Mafex one you can easily get for 55-60 dollars too, Idk where you paid 75 dollars for it.

I think i definitely prefer the marvel legends one. Not only is it a better deal with the phoenix force, but the headsculpts look way better. The articulation is overall better as well. I had a feeling that the legs might be the height issue with Warbird as well as the small head sculpt think Jean has the black widow legs. Legends really need to sculpt long hair away from base of back of head to allow for looking up and I prefer the disc hinge. But both look good also I'm gonna beat up the sash on the marvel legends Jean and push it down so it sits better I did it with both the dark Phoenix and the black widow as it bugged me. Great review/comparison vid as usual.

Oh wow just noticed the ML phoenix does use all new upper chest and abs. The hips are shrieks but legs are spinneret (thic'r) you can tell the difference from the back hinge of knee.

Dave Cockrum designed the Phoenix costume and specifically indicated that they are supposed to be separate boots and gloves, not just part of the bodysuit. The boots also had a small heel. It’s just that modern artists are lazy and never draw her costume correctly.
