My gramps always sang the original version to me as a little girl ( by Lillie soutter) it was an anti chaplain song, I do love this version as its more up beat but the original will always hold a special place in my heart as me and my gramps sang it when I was a young un.

These are not the original words and the point of the song is lost. This was an anti Chaplin song because Charlie didn't come home from America and sign up to fight the Germans,
