- ORANG SUNGAI WHEN THE RIVER GOES REVERSE
The forest area in Sabah of Borneo Island has transformed from the tribal culture period to the timber industry. Now it’s becoming a reserved forest, portrayed as “the lung of the world” following the green trend. Local people like the Orang Sungai couldn’t help but adjust their “way of life” which can be traced back to their “co-living with nature” …just like in the past.
The Orang Sungai or “the people of the river” refer to local ethnic groups living near the Kinabatangan riverside in Sabah. They regarded the forest as their home and the river as their flesh and blood. In the modern era, their role has changed to be “the nourishers of the Sabah forest”. But, they are facing a challenge in passing on their way of life, their beliefs, and their traditional culture to “the gradually changing society”.
