Honestly if he's going to do the same comparison for Rayman 2, I want to save him the time to run the original PC version. All I can suggest is use a digital copy for the PC, because the original release is unplayable post Windows XP. As in game breakingly.

I absolutely cannot express how much I'm loving how in recent years the talk about Glover has just been increasing more, and more. I got the N64 version completely by happenstance since originally I wend to a used game store with a name that unfortunately completely escapes me. It was in a mall, and I know it wasn't a GameStop, but it had what you'd expect, shelves, and a glass counter full of games. I originally went to grab Donkey Kong 64, but they of course didn't have a copy, so I pretty much was told by my mother to look around and pick another cart I wanted, and out of all the ones on display, the one that caught my eye was that colorful sticker on Glover's, and I grabbed it while my sister got Pokemon Snap. Ever since then I have loved this game without end, the only exception being I will not touch those bonus levels with a pole the size of the Eiffel Tower, 100% completion be damned. I'll never deny the game's flaws, it has many, but I feel like the game has always been underrated, and the likes of the Game Grumps trashing it finally gave it a spotlight, but an unreasonably negative one. I'm glad so many people are giving the game more credit now, even though it's by no means a masterpiece, I still feel it's a great game to have. It's awesome that Piko got the rights to Glover to fix up, and finish the sequel, even if I personally feel like it takes too much from Banjo Kazooie rather than doing more to differentiate itself from it like the first game. Regardless, if a cart is released of it, I'll gladly save up money to grab one to put beside my copy of the first game. It'd be interesting to see how it plays on the intended system, as well as with, hopefully, a full, new soundtrack if they can find enough people that had insight of the development, and composers from the first game's track.
@JezMM
@JezMM 5 жыл бұрын
A small detail missed regarding the music is that the N64 tracks were actually way longer than the CD audio versions, usually containing a bunch of extra sequences and variations before they looped. Cool as it was for me to hear the music in CD quality when I got the PC version as a kid, it was definitely a bittersweet experience that most tracks were only about half as long. Cool to see the effort put in to get the PC version running properly here though. I actually mostly have memories of playing the low quality visuals you refused to settle for, since even at the time, my graphics card didn't seem to play nice with the game. Since I had the N64 version to play anyway, it was actually kind of novel for me to experience the game with super low quality graphics for some reason. My favourite touch was that on the absolute lowest settings, the ball was literally represented as a textureless, animationless sprite that was either red, black, grey or green depending on the ball's current form. I can also vouch from own personal memory - even on a CRT monitor from the time, that weird scanline issue on the pre-recorded video files in the game was still VERY apparent. Anyway, very decent video and a very fair judgement of the game overall! (P.S. That first puzzle on the final stage with the alien enemy that crystallises and launches your ball? You have to stun it with fist slams and push it away from the ball switch area so you can activate the switches uninterrupted... Or at least that's how I do it nowadays (as a kid I definitely used cheats on 50% of the puzzles, although low gravity was my personal go-to).

It's not just that. Listen to the track for the carnival world boss. They couldn't even loop the song properly. It still plays the jack-in-the-box theme for when Cross-Stitch pops out of the box at the start of the battle *EVERY. TIME. IT. LOOPS.* Are you telling me that these developers were so lazy, they couldn't get something right that Hasbro Interactive pulled off effortlessly on the Nintendo 64 A YEAR EARLIER!? I want this PS1 port of Glover to die from cancer!

1:00 So would the XBLA releases of Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie be SSRs, or CCRs? For a CCR standpoint, barely anything is different in the audible, visual, and gameplay aspects, but on an SSR standpoint, they're both on a console that's two generations above their original N64 platform (not counting their re-additions in Rare Replay).
@ExoParadigmGamer
@ExoParadigmGamer 5 жыл бұрын
+Nunof Yerbizness Banjo Kazooie and Tooie will both be Remake or Rebreak episodes. The key distinguishing point between CCRs and SSRs is the benefit of hindsight in the latter, particularly between generations. Glover on PS1 did come out a year later and they did respond to feedback, but it's too soon after the original 1998 game to be a later gen rerelease.

Even if the Cancelled Sequel was taking cues from the PS1 version, the N64 version being the MVP would've made the narrative come out as "the other glove was still corrupted by the freak accident, and wants to turn back to being evil", moreso than "the Wizard always had one good glove and one bad glove".

And didn't know the game gave you the cheats if you 100% completed it, I just discovered them by pressing B near the bird in the hub and it would make the sounds the C buttons make when you input them, if you catch the sequence, you can get the cheat codes that way.

Honestly, your feelings about glover is almost spot on about my feelings on Rayman 1. That game is very flawed when it comes to the difficulty and level design but the controls, graphics, and music always keeps me coming back. It's a game I always tell myself "never again" and end up replaying anyway because there's always something about it that draws me in. It's honestly the game I end up playing the most in the Rayman series despite every other game being better in almost every way, that want to see if I can do better and the want to improve my skills is so tantalizing that for like every playthrough of Rayman 2 or 3 I do, I do 2 playthroughs of Rayman 1.

Even though Glover wasn't the best game on the N64 when it came out and with some of it's massive flaws that you pointed out, it was really enjoyable and offered a good challenge when compared with other platform games. And yeah, Atlantis Realm has the best soundtrack in the whole game. Also IIRC, if you play on Easy mode your movement isn't inverted when you try and balance on the ball, which doing the practice stage wasn't that big of an issue to begin with for me anyway - but is kinda my biggest gripe when people shame the controls and think they can just jump right into the game.

You know, what I use to play old Windows 3d games is either Nglide which is a 3dfx plugin, basically it 'catches' 3dfx instructions from older games and translates them to Glide instructions. The other one I use is DGVoodoo2, which I actually use the most as it can essentially 'forces' games to run in 4k resolutions and even has some in-game hacks to minimize graphical errors. You can even apply anti-aliasing and shader techniques that the original games weren't capable of... just saying you didn't have to waste hundreds of bucks on old computers/parts. ^^;

Glover was my absolute favorite game as a kid and I personally had it on the Playstation 1. I honestly didn't know it was released for the N64 or PC until around 6 months ago. I think the thing that boggles my mind the most is that the hub doesn't change as the game progresses in the PS1 version. I could swear I remember the landscapes going from desolate to grasslands. I remember being fascinated and thinking that maybe the hub held secrets based on different points of the games progression. I'd say it's possible I imagined it but I have Aphantasia so it's a bit beyond my scope of ability... Either way, I greatly appreciated the review and as someone who only found your channel three days ago I'm genuinely enjoying the precision and detail of your content. It's not often my attention can be kept for an hour+ in multiple videos.

It's safe to say gaming in that era was at a low in terms of visual and performance fidelity. Some of the best games of all time came out though.

Great episode! I couldn't help but notice that you had a Genesis copy of Toy Story sitting atop your TV. Can we expect an episode on both Toy Story 1 & 2 in the future? I remember playing the PC version of the first game and it totally ruined the experience for me lol

0:55 I’m curious where would a game like Monster Hunter 3 fall? It originally released for the Wii in 2010. But got updated versions on Wii U AND 3DS in 2013

The G/Ultimate game are essentially glorified DLC sold as an entirely new game. In fact, the majority of the time, they primarily slap more content onto the end of the game and extend it for another rank. As such, they should be treated exactly like that: a massive DLC expansion to the game. The only time that didn't happen was in 3 Ultimate, which uses Tri as its baseline, and ended up merging with Portable 3rd as well as completely restructuring how the online worked. You could almost end up considering it a completely different game from both Tri *and* Portable 3rd.

RandomNPC so cross platform?
@randomnpc445
@randomnpc445 5 жыл бұрын
@@kylecampbell565 I would say they belong in neither. Cross Platform would apply if Monster Hunter 3 was on the Wii, PS3 and 360, but it's not. The only games that would apply would be Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate (Wii U vs 3DS), Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (PSP vs PS3), Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (3DS vs Switch, but even then, 3DS was japan exclusive) and of course, Monster Hunter World and its Iceborne expansion. Likewise, the only games that would be applicable for Remake or Rebreak would be Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP and then iOS) and Monster Hunter: G (PS2 and then Wii, though this is also Japan exclusive).

Glover is the only boxed game in my collection. Why? Because it was cheaper than the unboxed n64 games at that flea market. $20 bucks with the full box and manual I believe. Even came with an ad about Nintendo power.

Ive always been fond of this game since my childhood. Ill admit the level design is all over the place and the ball physics are a little too janky for their own good, but I just think the idea behind the game is very creative, and the graphics and soundtrack are quite good for a third party N64 game. Plus, It was just nice to have another good N64 platformer that wasnt Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie. Also, I really admire your dedication and research just to show off how flawed the old PC port of the game is!
