I learn a tactic from my stepdad to get players to go from murder hibos to adventurers. On of the first games i played was with my brother and cousin. We were around 5 and we were definitely murder hobos. The reason being, thats how vudeo games were back then. So my stepdad had us go after a necromancer. Backstory, the villagers were worried because the undead were walking and graves were being dug up. My step dad put emphasis on no one being harmed. We found the necromancer lair and fought through waves of undead skeletons. When we finally got to the necromancer, he didn't just attack us, instead he begged for his life. Being murder hobos we attacked. The necromancer used powerful magic and almost killed us, but again, he begged for his life. Thats when we stopped and said this guy is dangerous, maybe we should take the easy win. When we accepted his surrender he told us that he wasnt an actual necromancer, just a wizard that wanted to learn how to make golems. He was learning from human remains because they already had the shape of a human, but could make stronger ones using different materials. So my stepdad told us that we gained an ally that could make us skeleton bodyguards. We could each have one traveling with us and we could have as many as needed to guard our base. The skeletons could wield a sword and shield and be made from different metals and have a gem inserted in its head. Long story short, we learned that sometimes killing everything netted us less rewards than negotiation and our murdering hobo ways slowly disappeared.

"What do you want them to need." A terrifically concise insight. This also reminds me of, "What gets rewarded, gets repeated."

Xp isn't the problem, it just also isn't the solution!

XP should be skill based and the best XP Is gained from Fumbles & Crits. Something like it is in some ttrpg's.
