Just a quick note on Rakshasa. D&D Rakshasa have literally nothing in common with mythological Rakshasa. Mythologically they definitely aren't Tiger people with backwards hands, as far as I'm aware they aren't even trickster spirits or inherently malicious (Though I could be wrong.) From what I've heard Garry came up with them by watching an episode of a pretty racist TV show that portrayed them as evil beast (Sort of Tiger) people from a far off land. He then did no research on the actual mythology and just made the monster. From what I've heard WotC have got in some trouble because their fairly racist depiction has become much more popular and well known (At least in the west) than the original mythological creatures. They've changed the art on a few MTG cards but as far as I'm aware they've done nothing for D&D yet. Personally I hope they just change the creatures name in the new monster manual. D&D Rakshasas are really cool monsters and it would be nice if they get acknowledged as their own thing instead of being left how they currently are or getting removed entirely.

My two favourite depictions of gnolls in games that aren't DnD: In Pathfinder 2 they're a highly spiritualistic race that immortalise their loved ones as trophies they carry on their body - usually the skull - as they believe that their soul lingers in said trophies and bring skill and good luck to the inheritors. In Heart, gnolls come from a different continent and they're basically a gang of scavengers less 5e gnolls and more... Mad Max Fury Road gangs. Basically they raid the dungeons in parties of four, seeking artifacts to bring back home and sell, usually a captain, one medic, and fucking GUNNERS. *GUNNERS*.

So, regarding Rakshasa, they aren't specifically associated with tigers in their actual myths. They're shapeshifters that do sometimes turn into tigers. But the DnD assiciation is bc Gygax watched an episode of a show at the time that depicted them that way, and then didnt do any research into the actual myth. It's a whole thing. The 5e Rakshasa is basically just a game of generational telephone about a myth from another culture, though I think some more recent stuff has attempted to make them a bit more accurate to myth (emphasizing shapeshifter, de-emphasizing them being specifically tiger-people, etc). WotC did a whole thing regarding Rakshasa for MtG (removing the cat subtype).

This reminds me of when I planned a Dnd adventure with my mom. I needed a adventure to run on the road while my players were travelling to the next place so I started bouncing ideas off my mom since she has always been interested in the story side of dnd but never wanted to play. She came up with this old women living alone in a little cottage and a vegetable garden with a rabbit problem that the players needed to sort out for her, the twist being that the garden is magical. Each vegetable was a consumable spell of some description, my players were somewhere between 3-5 at the time and some of these vegetables were 6th level spells. The rabbits having eaten this veg their entire lives were magical too, one giant boss rabbit that bounced about with a AoE thump attack, and tons of little rabbits that bump into each other and multiply 2 become 4 become 8 etc etc. It was a chaotic fight. At the end of the day my players left with a armful of magical produce, to this day one of the best sessions I have ever run.

So the story about the Hawk dropping a Turtle on a bald man’s dome is originally associated with the story of how an Eagle dropped a Tortoise on the bald head of the Greek playwright Aeschylus, mistaking his bald head as a rock, killing him with the magic of gravity. However, there are older reports of this happening to bald men prior to Aeschylus’ head banger end. There are also modern reports of this happening, and they used it in an episode of C.S.I (C.S.I Vegas I think).

To use an intellect devourer against a low-level party, have the brains trade places. The hero suddenly sees everything with 60' blindsight, from the ground, since the intellect devourer was hiding under a bush / behind a rock. They would be unable to be able to "hear" what people say, by listeningen to them telepathically (also 60'), but the PC would not know that is what they are doing, nor would they automatically know that they can only talk using telepathy, or how to do this, presenting an interesting challenge, as opposed to."Int save, you dead." Meanwhile, the intellect devourer occupying the brainspace of the PC will try to blend in, and be very positive about killing that intellect devourer hiding in the bush over there "before it attacks us". At least, if the hero is killed by their friends, it will be a memorable death. Otherwise it will be good opportunities for roleplay and cleverness.

Just got to the part about Rakshasa and wanted to say that the Rakshasa of DnD are not directly translated from those in Hinduism and Buddhist mythology; they only really share a name and have basically no crossover in their historic visual representations! They only share a few details in their character, like prowess with illusion or want to devour humans. The Rakshasa of DnD are more directly linked with a hacky 70's supernatural detective show, where the monster of the week was called a Rakshasa and looks very similar to that which we see in DnD today. It's a very common misconception to link the DnD Rakshasa with the mythological one, so I just wanted to clear that up :) (if you see this anyway :'3 )

Piercers sure have changed appearance from AD&D 2nd Edition/D&D 3.5 (where they looked more like a conically elongated limpet with a rock-like rigid pointy armored shell that pierced their victims when it fell on them, and were hanging down from a cave roof where they attached with tentacles, and could sense vibrations) to D&D 5E (slimy wiggly worm-like creature with no hard shell but tiny wiggly legs on the side and an eye). 5E did in fact keep the Piercer's description text verbatim from 2nd/3.5 Edition's Monster Manuals... but the 5E artwork doesn't match anymore. The "larva of Ropers" concept is new, though, I think...

Idea: Storm Tarrasque. It uses the same stats as the regular Tarrasque, but has the following. Passive: Shocking Skin: Their skin crackles with energy, anyone who attacks it with a natural weapon or unarmed attack takes 1d10 lightening damage. Wings of Wind: They have a fly speed of 40ft. Active: Vacuum Cyclone: They inhale massive gulps of air causing a vacuum affect causing everything to enter their mouth. All creatures within 30 ft must make a DC16 STR saving throw or be moved 15 feet toward the Tarrasque's mouth. If the target enters the Tarrasque's gaping maw, they are treated as having been swallowed. Recharges on a 5 or 6. Thunderous Stomp: The Tarrasque stomps on the ground causing a deafening explosion of thunder. As an attack, the Tarrasque may perform this once per round. All creatures within 10 feet of the Tarrasque take 3d10 Thunder Damage. Lightening Breath: Even the Storm Tarrasque's breath crackles with the fury of nature. The Tarrasque breathed out a 30ft cone of lightening dealing 10d10 lightening damage on a failed DEX Save (DC 16), save for half. Recharges on a 6.

"That's Ed from The Lion King" reminded me of those vocoded "Who are smash bros characters - wrong answers only" memes. Definitely was on the right track with Rakshasa. He will absolutely try to rizz you up. I feel weird about the fact that you explained what a Tarrasque is without once mentioning Godzilla.

I love how she calls the terrasque a diner-saur! I think I'll use that as the reference for people to call it if I ever put it in my game.

My favorite rakshasa is the one from that official artwork for the books, hey Sarah Robinson, that you see minis for. The buff and shirtless one with baggy pants, a sick dagger, and blue flames around his claws. Rakshasa are supposed to be secretive, refined manipulators, and this guy’s out here throwing hands like a mystic monk of some sort. He is not a normal rakshasa, yet his image is used as the stock for many of them. Who is he? Why is he cool?

Emma is right about the reverse hands making magic twisted and unpredictable. In some ofthe indian lore, the way you can tell someone is a Rhakshasa and the reason they are so terrifying is because their swordsmanship is nigh impossible to fight against because all their movements are opposite of what you expect them to be and it makes them incredibly deadly fighters, basically making it so the more training you have, the harder they become to fight. It's a shame they lost this part of the lore transitioning to DnD cause I always thought it was really neat. Note that Rhakshasa lore is marked significantly by the fact it was mostly spread through oral tradition and through a *very* large area and so there's no one consensus on what their defining traits are. Like how their name means 'save me' or something to that effect because that's what the God who originally created them cried when they attacked and tried to eat him. But because of that name some myths started painting them as guardian spirits and brave warriors which seems to have happened largely because of misunderstandings based only on their name.

21:00 that story is of an ancient Greek named Aechylus. But the story is it was an eagle that dropped it on his head, and that's how he died (allegedly).

The best way to deal with a rust monster besides fighting is with some shiny ball bearings or some cheap iron shavings 😉 a new use for your games should you encounter this creature to distract it or maybe befriend it like a pet?

Little sad he didn't bring up that piercers are the larval forms of ropers. Getting into a fight with both of them working in tandem is *terrifying,* because the roper can just grab you and keep you in place for the piercers to drop on you with advantage to hit, dealing a bunch of extra damage during the fight.

For the rust monster: some metals like aluminium or titanium actually have oxides (rust) that strongly bind to the metal (if you scratch it off it reforms, kinda self healing) and are harder than the metal itself (good for sharp objects). So if you made a weapon or armour out of that or out of gold (which doesn’t really rust) would it be useful to fight the rust beast with it?

I knew of the roper but not of the piercer, with it looking like a worm I thought it to be a burrowing monster and when you pointed out the second mouth I was like "ooh it eats dirt to move through the ground with one mouth and then it resurfaces like a whale to spit dirt and/or eat you with its upper mouth". I was way off lmao but honestly that's a nice idea if I can say so myself

Rust monster is the bane of my existence. They nerfed it because in 3e it would just rust anything metal immediately making it useless. It's the only monster that when the DM shows it, I meta game and just like "Nope, I'm out." 😂

Even though they weren't particularly tough themselves, a 3.5e rust monster could get a disintegration spell thrown at it by the wizard and everyone else in the party would say it was warranted. When one of those things could destroy a Ring of Three Wishes with just a touch, Fireball isn't enough.
