If you eat fewer calories than your body uses, you will lose weight. It doesn't matter how you achieve that deficit (burning more calories through exercise, or just eating less). It's simple thermodynamics. Now it can be more difficult for some people to achieve that deficit, both from metabolism (how much calories your body uses naturally), and your control over your diet/hunger. It is definitely a choice, although may be harder for some.

some people need more of a calorie deficit than others. Biologically speaking, there is no reason to expect everyones body to be equally efficient at extracting energy from food. So skinny people might just have inefficient digestive systems which allow them to satisfy their cravings and hunger without gaining weight as precipitously.

It's definitely a choice for me. I used to be a fat kid, weighing around 110kg/252 pounds back in high school. However, when I got to college, I decided it was finally time to hit the gym. I lost 40kg/88 pounds in a year, and now I'm a total gym rat, sitting at 90kg/198 pounds but with muscle instead of fat. It makes me feel much more confident and comfortable about myself now.

I went through something similar but it seems to me a lot of times when people say no to "is being fat a choice?" they usually just mean that this question oversimplifies the issue. The point they are trying to make is that there are many factors at play (education, upbringing, poverty, genetics etc.) which make it harder or near impossible for some people to maintain a healthy weight. For me my upbringing was the main issue but I feel like if my genetics had fucked me as well I'd have never gotten muscular and relatively lean.

It is a choice for the most part. There are outlier cases, of course, such as those on medications like mood-stabilizers and some anti-depressants that'll increase ghrelin and such. There are also other physiological adaptations to the weight that your body undergoes that can make that weight-loss journey all the more difficult. There's also a developed metabolic inflexibility that is developed, but it does become more flexible the more weight you lose. The overall point I'm trying to make is that for the people in that position, weight loss is very much possible and a choice at the end of the day, but there are a multitude of other factors that can make that journey, that first-step all the more DIFFICULT and that those people deserve some level of empathy/support. Just as with people struggling with any other mental illness (though, I know that some people don't think those are real either), telling them to 'just get better' isn't exactly conducive to ameliorating the issue at hand. If you're just jabbing at them just to joke around, fuck it dude, sure, I can't stop you, but I think it's important to at least be aware of this. At the end of the day, it is just as simple as calories-in & calories-out; the question though is how to help people along that journey as opposed to simply throwing stones at them.

I did the Keto diet once. On top of it usually being lower calorie, it also cuts out all sugers and of course carbs. It's insane how much water weight you shed off in little more than 2 weeks. I'm not even overweight. I just wanted to get into shape quickly. That is why I seriously doubt the "salad" girl was actually eating very little. Everyone's body, despite how active their metabolism is, will quickly turn to fat to burn for energy. Once it is in that fat burning state, you can easily lose 10+ pounds in a matter of a few weeks.

It’s true that there are a lot of things related to weight that it is not your fault, for example how you are raised and the habits you develop growing up and how fast your metabolism is. This can make getting thin as easy as by accident or extremely difficult. Two people can put the same amount of effort into losing weight and be in very very different places. I’m one of those people that couldn’t gain a lot of weight if I tried because I burn so much fat in my sleep. There are people on the other side of the spectrum, luckily there is plenty of information out there help.

I used to work on an eating disorder unit with people starving to death. I now work with people who take antipsychotics and tend to balloon up when taking them- a very common side effect. For the most part our weight is our choice, but there’s lots of physical and mental illness that can cause all sorts of issues with weight. Many people grow up in situations where they never learn what being healthy really means either. Some people love to parrot “calories in calories out” like they’ve only just learned it, but things like smoking, drugs, weight, lifestyle, all have so much more behind it. I’ve always been skinny and it’s been nothing to do with willpower for me, I eat when I’m hungry and I eat what I want. I just that don’t want a whole lot. People are not superior for finding it easier or for not having difficulties with it.
@perssontm1628
@perssontm1628 10 ай бұрын
But what you're not realising is that the people with mental illnesses that prevents them from doing ANYTHING to change their weight is 1% of the entire population. Most people can if they choose to, gain weight, lose weight, quit smoking, quit drugs. It's not easy, but it is a choice. Most people just choose what's easier. I've also been extremely skinny, I was made fun of in school for it. Eating enough to gain weight has always been extremely hard for me. But after going to the gym for a while, planning my meals, I've managed to gain a lot of weight. It's not been easy, but it was still my choice. It would have still been my choice If I chose the easier option. I'm also addicted to smoking, I know I should stop because it's bad for me, and I want to stop, but I choose not to, because it's easier. A bad choice, an unhealthy choice, but I do it anyway and it's still my choice. It's the exact same with weight gain.

The word "choice" is doing a lot of heavy lifting. It is a choice if you believe in free will. But then anything is a choice. Being sad is a choice, being angry is a choice, being lazy is a choice, being poor is a choice, being depressed is a choice. We are not asking the right question. It's not whether being fat is a choice; it's about whether that choice can be compared to the "choice" that skinny people make to be skinny. Is XQC actively making a choice to not overeat? Or does he just have no urge to overeat? It's really easy for me to not gamble, because i do not have a personality that conduces to that type of behavior. But it's not easy for him to stay away from gambling because his brain is firing on all cylinders when he's confronted with the "choice" to gamble. The same applies to overweight people. They are, most of them anyway, predisposed to becoming fat because of who they are. They might love to overindulge in things, they might generally hate exercising and they might have naturally high ghrelin levels, the hormone that makes you hungry. So saying "no" to eating cookies is way harder for them than skinny people. Just like it's harder for X to say "no" to gambling than for me. That doesn't make either of us more or less disciplined. If you are skinny and you disagree, try not drinking coffee for a month and tell me how easy it was. It's not hard for me because i hate coffee. So i'd be more disciplined than you. But that's silly. Tl;dr: I'm based and right, you are cringe and wrong.

I believe one point missed out on chat vote,the vote was is being fat A choice. NOT is being fat AND skinny is A choice, like in the video. If both questions are asked in the same question the vote will be MUCH higher because you have genetics on BOTH sides. I am skinny and it is near on impossible for me to gain weight no matter how much I eat. I think 30% is very accurate and the 15% from the chat vote is accurate because it only counts one side of the vote. So yes majority of people are skinny and fat by choice and diet, exercise, etcetera. And A smaller portion is is the lower category not by choice. TLDR: Yes A smaller % of people are Skinny or Plus size not by choice. But not an overwhelming amount of percentages. Furthermore A lot of people (in majority) like to blame their own weight size, big or small due to genetics and/or blame it as it's not thier choice. Also another aspect to add in, muscle gain when you are bigger and trying to lose weight overall and downsize your total weight, it is very hard to lose muscle gain which you gain when you are losing fat. Compared to being smaller sized already and trying to gain fat and muscle. A LOT of people overlook this. My body is mostly muscle with A very high metabolism so it is extremely hard for me to gain weight and muscle even when I am eating 8k+ A day.

I’ve lost around 200 pounds recently so I think I’m qualified to give a good take on this… It depends from person to person. We should probably stop making these blanket statements. It doesn’t solve any issues. Everyone has multiple reasons for being fat, literally there can be so many. Losing weight can be pretty hard, and definitely harder than most people treat it. Saying it’s just a choice downplays so much nuance. Mental shit as well can make it much less of a “choice.” Also, people need to stop being so rude to fat people for no reason. Most times it just makes people feel worse about themselves and can lead them to eat more for comfort. It’s a huge mental struggle for most overweight people. Treating them better and supporting them, and kindly promoting losing weight (at the right times) can do wonders. Not to mention we need better education around what’s actually healthy and how to lose weight properly. Chatting

Being fat or thin is often at least partially a choice, but it's not really about whether or not it's a choice, because deep down the gross majority of people know that choices can reverse it. People may disagree about how easy it is (and in truth it is subjective), but at the end of the day few people totally disagree that your choices can change your weight. The real issue is young otherwise totally able people justifying and normalising weight extremes. They accept it's a choice but they say it's ok to choose not to be a healthy weight. It's not ok. Being a totally ideal weight can be difficult, shit happens in life, no one is perfect. People can also feel hunger more or else, or get hungry faster, if you have both you're fucked, and you could also have it the other way around, but as long as you know being overweight or underweight is wrong and you should aim for a healthy weight, it's ok if you aren't always there throughout your life. Also if you're a bit fat or thin, but you eat good nutritious food, and exercise, and otherwise have a healthy life, you're probably doing fine. No one has the truly right answer, just make sure you don't have a truly wrong answer, because there are plenty of them. Something I am a proponent of is that there exists a diet for every person that will allow them to maintain a healthy weight, with proper nutrition, that they can maintain most of the time, that makes them feel good and full of energy, sleep well, basically just give you a quality life, you just have to take the plunge and find out what it is. I don't believe it is the same for anyone. I recommend to start with finding the right staple carb or protein, something you can always fall back on.

I mean if you really think about it, if you didn't have a choice, you'd be skinny. Poor people/peasants during that time were not fat. They did not have the option to become fat and therefore were not fat. It's not in anyone's genes to be fat or for their body to prefer to be fat. Maybe 7 months. I now hover between 200 and 210 year round. Most definitely a choice and you cannot convince me otherwise. If you're skinny wanting to be big, eat small portions but eat more in quantity, ex 10 times a day but just toast. A banana for another meal, oat meal later. The point is to train your metabolism and break your genetic code. One Punch Man style. Gain weigth/fat, turn fat into muscle. Lazy sheeps just don't want to do 300 curls in the morning and at night. Some portion of it comes down to genetics. It also doesn't help that the western world is full of cheap, readily accessible, processed foods, filled with added sugars. The US especially does a terrible job with K-12 education on nutrition and health, even about two decades ago the consensus in public education was that carbs like pastas should be the majority of our diets according to food pyramids. A big portion of the picture comes down to genetics, environment, and culture. There's so much advertising funding towards fast food and junk food, it's ingrained in US culture. Obviously your genes, environment, and culture don't determine your destiny, but if we're looking at things from a big picture and from a statistical perspective, obesity is inevitable with the way the western world is currently operating. I understand it's amusing to be edgy and just hate fat people and put all of the onus on them; it's self-gratifying if you're not fat yourself, I've been there. But if you're forming a real grown adult opinion, the logical conclusion is that there is more to obesity than just everyone's personal inhibitions and self-control. Especially when we consider how addictive certain foods can be, and how some people are more prone to addiction. A lot this disdain towards fat people comes from a place of ego and a desire to virtue signal. Fat people are an easy target to make yourself feel better that you are not someone who's simply "on autopilot" and eats unhealthily to their hearts desire. No, you're someone who's above it all and has control, and every outcome of your life is 100% due to your deliberate actions, rather than it being a combination of your own choices as well as the environment you grew up in and the conditions of your life. You'll find that people who hate fat people also look down on homeless people, it comes from a similar place in our psyche. You just have to grow up and drop the ego one day. Yes, there are things you can do to stop being obese if you are obese. Are they easy if you already are obese? Probably not. Yes, there are things you can do to stop being homeless if you are homeless. Are they easy if you already are homeless or on the path towards it? Probably not. There is a bit of uncontrollable factor, but noticing that can't be compensated for. My metabolism is slow. If I eat 1400 calories a day I sit at 5'8 185lbs. If I eat 1400 calories a day and exercise for a couple hours, I weigh less. These people are just lazy and don't care that they're slowly killing themselves.

this is such a complicated subject that it's impossible to make it so black and white. there are just so many factors into weight gain, like ED's, disabilities, severe mental health issues like agoraphobia and depression and such. as someone who is on the heavier side, I would love to lose weight, and it's a very frustrating mental cycle. i dunno man, it's too complicated of a topic to just answer, "is being fat a choice" yes, or no.

@@90bubbel60 I think that it's a choice to TRY and lose weight, but that doesn't always guarantee success because of the varying factors if that makes sense. For example, someone could work very hard to lose weight and after many months, see very little progress because of things like diabetes, struggle with consistency, lack of affordable resources, etc. It's definitely interesting. this isn't at all a malicious comment btw, i just find it interesting to hear peoples opinions and things!

A lot of people's argument on why being fat is okay is "Well anyone should be able to look how they want in their own body and beauty shouldn't be judged off of weight". However, the main point of the argument is the health risks that come along with it not the "looks" of fat people. Not only are you subjecting yourself to an endless list of negative health effects, but you are also subjecting your children, family, friends, etc. if you were to die from it. Pushing the "fat is okay" agenda is just encouraging more people to inherit that unhealthy lifestyle. Sure, our society is ACTIVELY working against obese people, but that isn't going to and shouldn't change.... Shaming in any capacity is cringy asf, but ENCOURAGING NO CHANGE is worse imo

So if your parent only buys fatty/unhealthy foods and will not listen to your words when asked to switch to the healthier options....you have to go 18 yrs or however long eating things like that then how is there an “option”/“choice”, unless you expect them to just not eat for 18 years straight I can’t see the logic - Health conditions or injuries that cause them to be paralyzed/eat out of an IV/unable to exercise Working in absolutes is retarded, I think alot of people make excuses and overarching statements to justify their bad eating habits and complete misunderstanding of dieting but saying “it is absolutely 100% a choice” makes no sense

I don't like that they don't respond to the question, but instead choice the wrong answer just to make a point to their personal story. 1) Would you rather big Skinny or Fat? ---> The guy chose to say FAT, just because he wanted to say that Skinny also has some negatives..... BUT i bet if he had a button to now be fat, he wouldn't press it. He could just have said : > 2) Being fat is a choice or not? ----> The good responses for me is : for the majority of people, it's a choice. Like 80% yes, and 20% no because of hard medication and illness. --> But then again, half of those participant here chose to say NO, and argument by telling their own little story about being in those 20% minority. They could have said : It was not the question here. Again, why can't you just respond to the question itself, then speak about other stuff like job. Or maybe she understood the quesiton as "is worse" = "more time shaming on average" ? I guess we can understand it this way, yes

here is the ultimate answer towards is being fat a choice: The amount of hunger you have is not a choice therefore its easier for some people to stay thin than for others. some people are constantly hungry and have to fight against their urge to eat whereas other people rarely get hungry making it more easy to stay thin. that being said, with enough discipline even the hungriest person on the planet can stay thin but fighting against their urge to eat although at that point you rather accept being fat and relaxed than constantly having to fight the urge to eat and being unhappy and grumpy all the time

As a skinny person for most of my life- I agree with the take around 40 minutes. In middle school kids made fun of what I ate either way. If I ate too much "where does all of it go?" if I didn't eat much "OMG you eat like a bird no wonder you are so skinny!"... I developed a binge eating disorder and would binge eat junk food afterschool. Entire packages of chips, popcorn, salami, deep fried chicken nuggets and fries, I'd drink like 4 soda cans in like 2 hours between afterschool and when my parents came home. No, my metabolism didn't allow me to gain weight, but eating like that made me feel just as shitty as people's comments when i'd eat lunch at school. No matter what you look like people (especially kids) say sh*t and its best to just not care. You'll be happier and hopefully healthier (if you eat what makes you feel good overall at least some of the time).

As someone who was fat in HS hmmmm its can be a choice to some but as ive grown up and worked with a lot of people, I would say a lot of time its a form of addiction. We look at addiction and being fat as different and it is sometimes but a lot of people ive helped with losing weight have been addicted with food. Its like a comfort thing for them when they are stressed, lonely, or going through something they binge or eat out. Im not saying its okay, im just saying what it is most of the time. And thats psychological more than anything and most of time they dont even notice theyre doing it. Helping people lose weight was like a calling for me when i was in college. I was a nutritionist and personal trainer at my university for a while. Its hard to get people from eating when theyre bored to going to the gym when they feel stressed but those that do make the change, lose so much weight and become so healthy. However, getting to that place takes ALOT of dedication and being just plain tired of being fat. Family plays a huge role as well, as parents like to feed their kids like crazy and when theyre big, you have parents who make them feel terrible about themselves or parents who encourage their eating. Its complicated. I dont like saying its a choice because its not that simple, its a habit and a coping mechanism for a lot of people so its just not as easy as saying its a choice but i get why people think it is. Before i left uni i had helped students lose more than 1000 lbs over everyone I had mentored or coached. I get calls from them sometimes and its nice to hear theyre still healthy but some are struggling again. Its a weird feeling or maybe im just too soft for not wanting to call it a choice idk ...its been a while since i thought about this. But if anyone is struggling out there, please seek some help with a dr you trust or maybe a best friend and tell them you want to change and to believe in you because thats the best thing you can do. Ignore what everyone says to do and do it for yourself and a better future. So you can one day run a marathon, surf some waves or skateboard. I know no one will read this but damn this really made me think about all those people again and all their stories.

idk i'm skinny and my diet is absolutely terrible. i consume copious amounts of sugar, calories, carbs, whatever. i eat out every single day of my life and don't know how to cook and the only thing i "make" is frozen trash. i drink a lot of soda. but my body hasn't mildly changed in proportion since i was a kid. i've never had a belly despite any of these unhealthy eating choices. and i'm not physically active either. it's really not hard for me to believe that there are people who have these genetics except in reverse.

I wish Xqc being super skinny like he is would have addressed how there is also a stigma with being a full grown man and being super skinny. Im built like X and i would have to say alot of fat guys have MUCH more confidence than me with their shirts off.. In my adult life i have found the majority of women would prefer a larger fatter guy then a bone thin man. Also in society i feel that a fat guy would also demand more respect than a skinny guy.. The guy in the pink shirt sort of addressed it for a second.

Might not be an easy choice. But it’s deff a choice. Every type of person out there has lost weight. If you want to lose weight you can lose weight. Most people just PREFER to not go to the lengths they need to in order to lose weight. It takes a long time and a lot of effort and preparation to lose significant weight. Most people have trouble with motivation for things that take a lot of time and getting started on a diet can be very difficult and quite depressing. And any slip up will make it hard to get back into it. So it’s very difficult. But at the end of the day it is a choice. If someone wants to lose weight enough, they will.
