Hello.I have just watched all your videos on the engine rebuild and they have given me the confidence to tackle the job myself tomorrow.thank you so much.

Wonderful to hear! I'm thankful that you found the series helpful. Have an awesome time rebuilding, and please do remember that it might not go as planned, and sometimes you'll need to make an unexpected trip to the store for a new tool, or you might be stopped by a stubborn bolt. We experienced these times, and at the end of the rebuild it made for a complete experience. Stay patient, and have fun with it. Best of luck! Cheers!

Thanks a million for this great series. Timing chain broke and I might attempt a repair on my NX 650 Dominator (same engine as XR 650L). Before it "exloded" I drove a good while without oil as I didn't notice the "cork" had blown off where the kick starter used to be (removed by the previous owner). Put a cork in it and it did run rather ok for a good while after that though...

Thank you so much! Excellent to hear!!! We were hoping these videos would help shine some light on such a beautiful engine. The XR gives unlimited love back, and is one of the toughest bikes out there. Thank you for watching and ride safe!

Good series of videos on the rebuild, I wish these had been posted before I did mine. Excellent advice on the oil priming, I've stripped and re-assembled mine at least 3 times and its worth checking as once it was a nightmare to get the oil flowing.

Hey Nasoukikos. I change the oil between 1600 - 3000Km depending on where and how I'm riding. If I'm consistantly riding hard on dirt trails with sandy areas I will change it at 1600Km or maybe a bit less. If I'm riding street and dirt I will usually wait until about 3000Kms. After going to the dunes I will change it after only 800Km. I use non-synthetic in my XR. Hope this helps. Take it easy out there! Ride safe!

Hey, be careful driving these Air cooled Xr's through water. I lost my First Engine rebuild because water splashed on the hot engine. Hence, cracking the block. Diluted the Oil, the whole engine was trashed. Just bad luck. I too gread care of it. Just a head up, my butt clinched when the rider drove through the water... Otherwise, great video, I always love to see fresh rebuild's last for years.

Thanks for the advice. I hadn't thought about this. Will be careful after learning of your experience. Sorry you had to learn that way, and thanks for sharing you knowledge. Really appreciate the feedback. Hope you're having a great riding season. Cheers to adventure bikes and riding another day!

@@XRLand I actually haven't had my bike since. but indeed and thank you for the reply. Glad ya took something from this experience because I will promise you your engine will be compromised. Really, no Hot engine should be taken through water. But these air cooled Xr's are just worse on that note. God Bless, be safe out there! o7.

Thanks for a great series. I'm anticipating re- rebuilding (No that's not a typo) my engine soon as I suspect the newly repaired cylinder Nicasil recently failed while I was riding. I'm not sure how I can check that without removing the cylinder head which I don't want to do if not necessary. My exciter coil has failed, shortly after fitting a reconditioned one, so I'm hoping it was the CDI which caused that, but would appreciate your input..

your series is great. I'm hooking up all the lines now that I'm back in my frame. I dont suppose you have a video for that. Not sure which throttle cable goes where.

Hey, I recently picked up an 86 XR600R for a great price (free!) And am going to attempt my first motorcycle rebuild.. I am decent with classic cars so should be able to handle this. However, you didnt state which parts you replaced/cleared out of this motor- and I'm assuming buying one of the engine rebuild kits out there wont be all encompassing. Any shot you can send me the parts you know I will need?? PS mine didnt come with a carb so an aftermarket one is gonna happen - recommendations?
@XRLand5 жыл бұрын
Hey Brandon. Congrats on getting an XR600R. Sounds like you do have the skills to handle the rebuild, and I'm excited for your journey. Let me dig through my old files and see if I can come up with a parts list. I know, aside from gaskets, that I purchased... Cam bearings, valve seals, cam chain, cam chain guide, cam chain tensioner, piston, wrist pin, main and countershaft bearings for the transmission, shift forks (third gear was slipping out), and new cylinder bolts. I did NOT get a new crank because it was still within spec. For aftermarket carbs I'm not sure when it comes to the dual carb setup. My brother had a flat slide mikuni single carb in his 91, and that really changed the bike's power. The flat slide was also noticeably easier to throttle up and down, and the diameter of the carb was larger to accommodate higher flow rates. BIke ran fantastic, and started easier. So hopefully there are some threads online about what carb to get for these dual carb setups. If I can find more information about what I purchased during my rebuild, I'll share. Best of luck. Two of the challenging spots were getting the cylinder bolts out, and the cylinder separated from the block. We used a rubber mallet to gently add vibrations. The other challenge was separating the crankcase halves. The rubber mallet and plastic dash removal tools helped here. You'll never forget the smell of the oil that comes out of the crankcase when you open it. Take care and ask more questions as they arise. All the best!

I'm not sure if this is the place to put this but, I have a 2000 XR600R and the engine has a very audible tick. Should I worry about it? I've taken the bike to a shop and got them to look over it, they couldn't figure out what it was.
@XRLand9 жыл бұрын
Mr. Nommington If ticking is coming from the head, then you may need a valve adjustment. The timing chain tensioner could also cause noise that sounds a bit like loose valves, and can be heard on the right side of the engine. When is the last time you had the timing chain and guides replaced?

Hello can you say me what kind of thermometer you use in the oil stand controler
@XRLand3 жыл бұрын
Hello and good morning. The gauge was bought from XRsonly. Seemed to work well. I would rate it an 8/10 for product quality because the oil that was originally in the gauge evaporated out. Also, there are no dipstick markings, so I had to make my own markings using the stock dipstick. Take it easy out there!

Amazing lessons! One question: how you connected the rpm counter? Thanks
@XRLand6 жыл бұрын
Thanks SO much for your compliment! For this RPM gauge it required that a single wire (coming from the gauge) be wrapped around the spark plug boot several times (8 -12). Nice and easy install that only required removing the fuel tank. After wrapping the wire around the spark plug boot, I added electrical tape to cleanly finish the job. Let me know what other questions you have please. Best!

@XRLand10 жыл бұрын
With a 152 main jet, 39 is average mpg. With 180 main the bike averages about 36. That is for dual-sport riding under 55pmg. The bike drops to 32mpg if riding 60mph on the highway in heavy winds.
