I got this charger not long ago and I didn't have high expectations as it's chinese but to be completely fair - it has far exceeded them, XTAR seems to be a solid brand that does actually deliver on what's promised and doesn't make any sketchy products like 15000mAh 18650 cells. Really nice and cheap piece of kit.

It's fine, the ones that have some issues are mostly the ones after this (VC4S I wasn't impressed with), this does a reasonable job at a fair price

Not sure if Xtar is a solid brand. The VC4SL, which should be the newest from Xtar, is a complete failure; it stops randomly the charging or put 1,5Ah more in the cell than the cell capacity, and it deliver max. the half of the speed if 3 -4 cells are inserted. And the charger decides which current it use, even if you change another one. The Top-Model, the VP4 Plus Dragon, seems to work very well but it lacks features for it´s price.

@@astroid99 It depends on what you need. If you only want to charge different types of cells and if you not always hurry the Nitecore UMS4 is a nice charger, especially for LiIon. My overall favorite is the Vapcell S4 Plus (if you don´t want tgo charge LiFePo4). It also have discharge/test features and is a very good chrager with NiMH also.

Mr Baz, I've had this charger for a few years, and I've had a few issues with it. One issue that you sort of touch on but not in great detail, is the charging current for Nimh AA or AAA's. The charger specs make it seem like for 2 AA in outer slots, it will charge at 1 amp and for 4 AA or 2 AA in middle slots it will charge at 0.5 amps. This should make it easy enough to be able to roughly predict charging time if you know battery capacity and how dead the battery is. But in real tests, I find the output current varies drastically and unpredictably from the 1 amp down to a paltry 100 mah (based on readout on the LCD screen). So as an example, for a 2000 mah AA that would take 2 hours (1000 mah delivered per hour) on my other chargers that deliver a constant current of 1 amp, this charger can take 6-12 hours to charge the same battery. Since I'm trying to use this charger while camping to charge my headlamps and Lanterns batteries, time to fully charge is an important factor. Wondering if you've also experienced this and whether you've timed charge time from dead to full (dead being around 1.1/1.2V). I used to own a lacrosse bc700 smart charger and was able to select charging up to 700 mah, and it would stay steady at that current until charging was done, resulting in a much faster charge time. I understand nimh can be damaged with ultra fast charging, but I've never read that 700 or 1000mah (1 amp) is too high for charging nimh AA's. Thoughts? thanks!
@MrBazReviews
@MrBazReviews 4 жыл бұрын
Thoughts are if you're USB power source isn't up to snuff, then the charging times are going to be slow. 6-12 hours is nuts so unless you've a real bad power source, I suspect that is the problem. I use only decent outputs hence no reason to talk about it much bar use a good power supply or USB current. 2.0 amp I've never seen a problem using a good USB output voltage/amps AA is fine at 1.0 amp for higher capacity (2000+), AAA usually 0.5A it can take faster if you don't mind hitting the recharge cycles.
@mikeoes1
@mikeoes1 4 жыл бұрын
@@MrBazReviews thanks for your thoughts, I considered the same thing so I tried a few different usb adapters from ranging 2- 3.1 amp 5V outputs and got same results! The one I tried today came with my samsung galaxy s10+ which is rated for 2 amp 5v or 9v 1.67A.... it must be something other than that. You mentioned for nimh that charger doesn't use CCV and pulses. Could this have something to do with it? Also have you ever popped in one fairly dead AA nimh and watch the LCD current indicator to see if it actually stays at 1 amp, mine starts at 1 amp (if in outer slots), then drops down usually to 100-200mah. This explains why it so slow to charge, but not why charger won't stay at 1 Amp?

I still have and use the La Crosse BC700 charger (ordered my Xtar VC4 yesterday, thanks Mr. Baz, your video put some of the wind in my sails), and charging my many Eneloop AAA and AA batteries, I always accept the default 200ma for the former, and boost the charging current to 500ma for the latter. These values are what I saw recommended in threads, in large part IIRC because of the La Crosse chargers' quirk in sometimes missing termination for the AA cells at 200ma. Also, I'm not in a hurry, have many extra Eneloops. Not sure what I will do with the VC4 beyond charging my 18650s (I have two 1200mah generics and will have 2600mah protected Fenix, also ordered yesterday). 1A and 0.5amp seem high to me for AAA, but I may charge my AA's at 0.5A in the VC4. I do like the slow aspect of the VC4, to me cell longevity is more important than fast charging.

Got to repeat what other users say about this unit, "I love it" and still use it, however just upgraded to the beast that is the xtar dragon, and im blown away with it. If you just casual vape and dont care what batteries your using, then its maybe not for you due to its price tag, just paid £67 however I wanted to ensure batteries were coming out with the correct mah, plus the refresh will come in handy. However the xtar vc4 is a good work horse, and will serve you for many years.

I use a lot of rechargeable batteries and use a couple of chargers. Decided to buy the VC4 on reviews. It's a dream to use. Just put the batteries in and that's it. No messing. Charges my AAA, AA, 18650, 20700 and 26650. One observation is when the batteries show charged, I've then put them in my Opus BT C3100 and some do then charge a bit more but its minimal. This charger is great to take with you on a trip as its USB. I've even tried it powered from an Anker 20100 powerbank and it works. Only charged 4 AAs. Haven't tried bigger 18650s yet on the Powerbank but I'm guessing it'll put a bit of juice in. OK in an emergency if needed. Very happy with this charger.

One question for other owners VC4: Does the Amps indicator in the middle change while charging the battery? For example I inserted 2x18650 empty batteries in slot 1 & 4 and it showed me that it charged with 1 A (total power draw on USB 1.9A). Well, after 2 hours the USB tester showed a power draw of 0.5A on the cable, but the indicator on the display showed 1 A charging current. This means that the Amp indicator in the middle is useless... it's either 0.5 or 1.0 Amp at the start. Why need a full dial for this if it's not showing charging current?

My particular VC4, purchased off ebay almost 2 months ago, seemingly has a few anomalies. The red LED of slot one appears not to work. That's no big deal for me because I'm color blind and have trouble distinguishing green from red, so it's sort of a blessing. Another issue is that sometimes, if I put a Li-ion in slot one it won't charge at 1.0A, but goes lower, even very low indeed. If I then move the same battery to slot 4, it charges at 1.0A. Don't know what's up with that. I'm also seeing that NiMH batteries if put in slots 1 or 4 will charge at 1.0A. I thought they were supposed to always charge at 0.5A, or so it said elsewhere.

I've stopped looking at Xtar products, reason being I've had QC issues - this one is working OK still, yet other ones have caused problems. So I am not overly impressed with the company. The outer bays should charge at 1.0amp, ie 1 and 4 regardless of if it's Li-ion or Ni-MH.

If you can live with the USB connection IMO the VC4 is a better charger because if you have fully discharged cells, the display counts the capacity put into a battery, which is useful. Okay, so... It will do my 20700 batteries? But can I charge them at .5amp rate? I've got plenty of batteries, so I'm not in a hurry. I think I prefer the slower .5 charge. In other words, using the outer ports(due to size), can I manually select the .5 amp charge? If not, will it hurt the batteries doing them at the full 1amp? I'm a long time vaper, but relatively new to 20700s and 21700s. Great review, by the way. And thank you. PS: Know anything about Golisi or Adeaska chargers? I don't recall the exact model. They're typical i4/d4 type model numbers. They both fall in the $25-$39 price range. I ask because I really wanted the Xtar a year ago. However, the other two I mentioned both(I'm pretty sure both), act as a power bank, as well. Which I like having for my phone. Also, I'm not super battery savvy. These other models I mentioned, I believe show you in percentage(%), how much charge your battery is ACTUALLY holding, vs what it SHOULD be holding. I'm still using an older i4 Nitecore. Not only will it not do my new 20700s and 21700s, but I've got some older vtc5a Sony(18650s) that I know are not hitting the full charger anymore. Even after they're "Fully" charged, my vape products are only showing them at 90%. So... I figured buying one w/a screen would give me an exact insight as to which sets are no longer reaching max/full potential. And finally... And I'm soooooo sorry to ask so many questions, but it will NOT hurt to continue using my old i4 as well, would it? This way, I'll have access to 8bays instead of 4? I'll continue using my old Nitecore for my 18650s(if I need the space), and should I see signs of trouble, batteries not reaching a full 4.2volt, then move them over to the Xtar and check them? Shouldn't matter using both, I wouldn't think? Again, I'm so sorry about the SUPER long question(s). In short.... 1)Will the Xtar charge my 20700 & 21700 batteries? 2)Can I manually select .5amp on the 20700 & 21700s, even using the outer bays? 3)Will it hurt my batteries, if on occasion they're in the Xtar for a cycle, and then back to i4 for a cycle? 4)As for the other two chargers mentioned, if you have any input? Great. If not, I'll just buy the Xtar. I definitely trust your judgment. Way more knowledgeable about this than I am. (Golisi S4 and Adeaska SQ4)(went back and searched the models). Thank you. Truly.

VC4 will charge unprotected 20/21700 cells no problem slots are long enough. I have not use the other makers so can't really comment. The Xtar charging speed is selected via the slots 2 outer ones (1 or 2 cells) to charge at 1.0 amp, if you use the middle 2 they charge at 0.5amp. I do voltage tests on the termination with charger reviews Xtar tend to get nearer to the 4.20 volts (9:28) than some makers, Nitecore usually go to 4.17v other brands might vary you don't want to be above 4.20 volts because it shortens battery life so slightly under is fine. Some battery mods can give readings that are not entirely accurate, but as said some chargers are a bit below the 4.20 volts. I don't see a problem with the VC4 except it's USB powered and should include a wall adapter for that in my view. D4 cant fit unprotected 20/21700 cells some chargers cannot, nor the Zanflare one I reviewed recently. For portable charging I suggest the Nitecore F2 has 2 bays 20/21700 cells fit and charges at up to 1.0 amp per bay, useful small charger to have around. VC4 is solid for the price (ie it's not that expensive) and charge quality is good/accurate. Hope that helps

After looking at the F2 as well, and needing a travel charger as well, I've decided to order both. I figure I'll use the Xtar around the house, alongside my old i4(giving me 8bays total). And the F2, if I really need 10bays, bot mostly for my vehicle. And to be honest, I passed on the Xtar a year ago? Because of NOT including a wall adapter. At some point, I'll probably try and find a REAL wall plug for the vc4. Seeing how I just stumbled onto a place called the "The 18650 Store"(dot com), and the Xtar is $15? And free shipping? You can use 1.0 amp but it will slow the charger, so 2.0 amp is better USB is always rated to 5 volts usually a decent PSU is slightly over 5V doesn't matter, a low grade one below 5V will slow it down (less voltage drops charging rate). Mr. Baz, I probably could / should have got into rechargeable batteries for certain & various items years ago. I think my main reasons were that I didn't want to get all kinds of expensive stuff that wouldn't last, and my uses were probably a bit few and far between so could get away with alkaline batteries alot of times. A few questions as you seem to have firm knowledge on much of this stuff... Sometimes if I charge a battery (battery charger shows full or stops) and then use the battery, doesn't seem to last very long. Similarly if plugged back into the charger - appears to start process all over. Is it bad, going bad or they just don't retain repeat charges? Can you recommend a good or your go to best all around battery charger that covers multiple batteries and types (covers a variety) and fairly easy to use with decent information for some of us non electronics people? Thank you Mr. Baz for this great video, which helped me decide to order a VC4 yesterday. I am curious because I struggled in making a decision by virtue of the fact that Amazon is offering Xtar VC4 in at least two different pages, each with different reviews and pricing. I had to wonder if there are different versions of the VC4 (I'm not talking about the VC4S or any other offerings, these are VC4) and poking around the internet couldn't determine an answer. Finally, after seeing your video and checking here and there I ordered off an Ebay listing. So, my question is, are the Xtar VC4's all the same? BTW, I have a couple of SlimQ 65w USB GAN chargers, a 100w one too, so I figure I'm fine for power source for my VC4. The 65w one's label says it will provide 2.4A from it's USB-A port and 3A from the USB-C port (which I figure I could use if I want using an adapter for the VC4's supplied proprietary cable). The 100w SlimQ's label says it provides 4.5A from both. I'm going to rewatch your video here now! Thanks again!

@@MrBazReviews Thank you. Well, I already ordered the VC4. I'll just try to keep the supplied barrel ended cable functional. I just watched your review of the VC4S. Yes, indeed, it's one to steer clear of. One of the reasons the VC4 appeals to me is the limiting of charge rate. My BC700 La Crosse (I have a BC900 too) does that, I can select charge rates from 200 to 500 to 700 and possibly 1000ma. I find the advancing with button push iffy but I persist. However, no support for 18650, which is a requirement that sent me shopping for a new charger. I did buy a very simple basically featureless 2 cell 18650 charger that has no buttons or screen and simply supplies 350ma and has LEDs that turn from red to green when the cell is full, I think on independent circuits. I anticipate I will like the VC4.

@@MrBazReviews I have a question: You note that the LED turns from red to green to indicate that charging is complete. I am red/green color blind and chargers that do go red-->green generally drive me up the wall. I sometimes have no idea if the LED is red or green, or if I do, I am anything but certain. Is there anything on the display that indicates that charging for any particular cell is complete?

I'm wondering about charging AAA NiMH cells with this. I saw it recommended that I use the lowest charge rate for my La Crosse chargers (200ma) to charge my Eneloop AAA cells. The Xtar VC4's lowest charge rate is 500ma unless you connect it to a relatively week USB charger (which I might do). Or is it better to use my La Crosse chargers' 200ma charge rate with those AAA Eneloop NiMH cells? Now, the La Crosse chargers do use a delta V termination method, so I'm thinking the soft stop of the Xtar VC4 may be the better choice even if charging at 500ma. These ideas are for my AAA Eneloops. I also have many AA Eneloops, and I presume the Xtar VC4 is definitely the better idea there. People have said to use 500ma rate with the La Crosse chargers with AA Eneloops because the charger is apt to miss termination signal at 200ma. Generally, I'm in no hurry (I have lots of cells), cell longevity is more important to me than speed.

@@MrBazReviews Thank you. Most of my Eneloop AAAs are rated at 750mah. I have a few Ikea sold LADDA 900mah AAA's, which are thought to be rebranded high capacity Eneloops in actuality, having been manufactured in Japan, and evidently that renders it certain that they are actually Eneloops. So, 0.5A is OK for charging 750mah Eneloop AAAs?
@MrBazReviews
@MrBazReviews 3 жыл бұрын
@@musicantd Doesn't matter 0.5A is not an excessive charge for 750mAh AAA cells or higher. @@MrBazReviews So you say "reduces charge cycles." I presume you're saying that it isn't dangerous to charge at 05A however it will impact longevity of the cells? So, I wonder if you could help me with a doubt. I use Ni-MH batteries (the ones that sells amazon) AA(2400 mAh) and AAA(800 mAh) I use them in TV controls, keyboards, stuff like that. So, what I want is to save my batteries lifespan the most, I have seen that this charger has some features that protects batteries from overcharging, overcurrent, etc. And I'm wondering if the XTAR BC4 would take care of my batteries as this charger (the BC4 says to have similar features as this charger) Do you have any advice about batteries lifespan with this brand, the XTAR?
@MrBazReviews
@MrBazReviews 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not getting Xtar review samples at this time nor will I as Xtar stole some of my videos! (long story but hmm) So I did not look at the BC4, perhaps there are other reviews that might help. The VC4 is decent, and IMO one of the last good Xtar ones to come out, the newer VC4S was not a good charger, nor the VC2S so I'm not overly impressed with their later offerings. I can say this is a good overall charger, being fair. Aside from the barrel connection I don't have a ton of complaints.

I would like a lower charge rate, but 0.5A isn't excessive for AAA cells it's very common on many chargers. I'd prefer say 300mA as an ideal charge rate

@@lexpee I've never seen a cell off this charger that is anywhere near "hot". I assume you are not using the 1.0A bays, even so I've never seen any kind of heat output off this charger that is of concern it uses a voltage termination with top off, not Delta V. So I would have to say the unit must be faulty

Chargers acting weird today. Charged a lith ion battery I’ve charged in it atleast 5 times already and it’s reading it as ni mh battery, kind of stumped have a bunch of these same batteries and use this one battery daily and tried to charge it but reading reading lith so it won’t charge to 4.2 smh

Jumped the gun on this, there's a vc4s that's capable of quick charge 3.0 USB input, has a nicer display, and it also adds internal resistance measurement! No USB c yet though...
@MrBazReviews
@MrBazReviews 4 жыл бұрын
I don't recommend the VC4S it often puts high current into one or 2 cells when using quick charge, and there is no way to adjust the current on the charger other than using a lower power input. I wasn't impressed at all, the display is too small. Yes it has some nice features IR and testing, but the actual charging is sub par The VC4 is a better overall charger

I think the USB plug isn't an issue if they bundled the wall adapter with it, but as I say I think type C is the way to go for USB to devices. It wouldn't stop me recommending the charger because it is good and charges cells very well, minimal heat and accurate termination. I am planning on doing a "charger roundup/recommended" chargers video where I pick out ones I prefer and will suggest choices based on what you need.

I would just like to add summat......to charge a 18650 4200 mah battery @ 0.5A it would take 10.5 hrs....so could someone explain why when using this charger it only charges the batterys to 1850 mah in 2 hrs and says they are fully charged....
@MrBazReviews
@MrBazReviews 6 жыл бұрын
4200mAh doesn't exist for an 18650 the most is 3600mAh and even then many don't get much over 3500mAh. Many fake cheap capacity batteries around. Run them down, insert check the voltage on the dial and they do indeed charge at half an amp middle slots.

Make sure to check whether your VC4 is a counterfeit (some sellers on Amazon are selling counterfeits). On the bottom front corner of the box, there's a "scratch off". Enter the 18 digit number under the scratch-off on this site to check if the one that you've got is genuine.... www.xtar.cc/faq/antifakecheck/20180812/81.html

How is it possible that XTAR fucked up the VC4S? It should be an even better charger than this one, but instead is a cell killer!
@MrBazReviews
@MrBazReviews 4 жыл бұрын
Because they don't listen! Neither of the VCs models I would use. They are way too high charging rate 2.0A for AAA cells is crazy. I told them about the VC2S problems, none were fixed on the VC4S. You can fast charge AA at 2.0A maybe (with a hit to performance long term), AAA can handle 1.0A fast charging, above that is nuts.
