I didn't catch this before: At 2:25 Colin blows the lyrics! Well, they aren't the lyrics on the album, anyway...

The guitar on the outro from 2:50 on ... so sharp. Sends a tingle down your spine. This is so much better than their official video, thanks for posting.

This was shown on ABC's Nightmoves and I still have the whole concert on video. I have the copies of Juke magazine where they are interviewed (6/9/80) - threatening suicide if Melbourne didn't like them - and the Festival Hall concert is reviewed (20/9/80). XTC toured Australia a number of times as they also performed live on Countdown with Are You Receiving Me? 18/2/1979, Life Begins At The Hop 22/7/1979 and Generals & Majors 28/9/1980 (maybe more but they are the only clips I have).

Actually I think they were more comfortable in this concert than you think. Check out the fifteenth song of this concert, Helicopter. Andy couldn't stop enjoying playing the song.

Highly underrated. But when they were peaking, The Police owned pop music, followed by The Cars. And they were just too complicated for the casual listener. The song of theirs that made me stop what I was doing and "discover" them was Complicated Game. Genius certainly, but not radio material. As for this performance, I agree that they look about as comfortable as can be, not lipsyncing. One of the better sounding and energetic shows from them I think.

Exactly- shame on CSM, who was usually spot-on back in the day. One of the good things about XTC's music is that it doesn't sound like Beatle music (at least 99% of it, that is) despite being massive fans themselves. That's pretty impressive.

Underrated when compared to such an overrated group as Oasis who had the gall to compare themselves to "that other band" and probably always will. The mainstream never really knew who XTC was and never will, as opposed to the overrated Oasis. Just some food for thought, that's all.

Didn't they hold a record for being the loudest band ever at one point?

The Jam was a contemporary of XTC. However, The Jam were definitely releasing records/lps before XTC did, by a year at least.
@hufclufc13 жыл бұрын
@streettb Unfortunately, we never saw XTC develop and mature as a live act. Its such a shame they lost that dimension relatively early on. I prefer them to the Beatles any day lol

I don't agree with the nerd factor holding them back from popularity. Colin Moulding seems like charismatic as a front man/lead siger. He could have carried that part of it.. What bothers me is they have so many brilliant "pop" songs that should have made it to the radio but didn't/
@PAULLONDEN12 жыл бұрын
Well...t h a t surely is the truth.Oasis were always the press darlings,cause they helped to shift copies. Still remember Charles Shaar Murray in Mojo raving about "On The Shoulders Of Giants"...a collection of overblown shite noise.

some great comments here. and I think about this band often - wondering why they are one of only 2 or 3 'desert island' choices I would pick. I don't think AP is nerdy - yes he is awkward - but so was Joe Strummer, Paul McCartney is not particularly charismatic. Lennon was fractious. I think think they were not more succesful because they were too musically complex. Simple as that - they are pop++. With Jazz and prog rock thrown in. Too much for most people to get - simple as that. Lucky me.
