An exquisite composition. I can't believe that it's 2023 and this song sounds as good to me now as it did in 1982. I was just finishing school! It's never to late to get into this bands back catalogue. And I'm super excited for the next track. MELT THE GUNS!

This track is XTC in a nutshell. Superb melody, wonderful instrumentation, and wordsmith like lyrics. This is one of my all time favourite songs of theirs, and as I've said before it should have been a single. Oh well, off to carry on filling in the middle of my jigsaw now!

It might've ended up a single if Andy hadn't had his nervous breakdown and stopped the tour.. they did film a video for it.

Beautiful song! For years I only heard and had owned the single album version of English Settlement, which did not include this track. For years I never even knew this song existed. But when I finally heard it I was bowled over. Such a careful and methodical tempo, but amazingly purposeful. So well constructed, with subtle, unexpected chord changes and almost discordant vocal melodies and flourishes, but with immensely rewarding melodic resolutions. And the lyrics!!! Astounding!!! This is by far my favourite English Settlement song that was not on the original album I bought. There are other songs I prefer on the album, but man, this is a sweet one!

As the song says “but there’s missing something in the middle”. I own the single album and I missed a lot of the songs off the album dearly with this song and “Down With the Cockpit”

Jp you now are so locked in to xtc your admiration is a delight to. Watch. Remember 3 years ago listening to Making plans. You were like this is cool but not quite sure what the fuss is about. Once you immerse and discover xtc your realise it’s not a big reaction it’s a world you enter and slowly devour and you are richer for the experience. Best of all it’s a big secret club the world is ver very slowly discovering

What a beautiful, melancholic song. Andy’s lyrics are so brilliant.

As I listen to this I'm reminded of the 8th best track on the Andy Partridge produced 1989 LP by The Lilac Time entitled "& Love For All." It's better than "I Went to the Dance" in fact, but The Lilac Time are the fifth best soul outfit in the whole wide world. Talkin of which, everybody needs Music In Colors by Stephen Duffy featuring Dr Nigel Kennedy. It's rather good. Diolch JP, I enjoyed that.

One of AP's most morose songs. I think his marriage was going 'through it ' around the time.when his wife threw all his valium stock down the toilet. But the lyrics are much more generalised in how life can catch up with you unawares, and things we took for granted, love, youth etc suddenly no longer exist for us. Brilliant song, lyrically and musically.

This could be my favourite song of the album. How good is this song writing? XTC are the upper tier of all U.K. song writing. John and Paul of course, but XTC are the natural progression. I love this song and its construction. Stunning lyrics of course but the brilliant musicianship as always. So glad you gave some credit to Dave. When he joined the band the band they went to the next level. A great guitarist.

You find you’re more than old, I think hit you like it hit me… thinking of our loved ones. Very deep meaning in these lyrics, yet many don’t care for the music or the band. I don’t get it, these guys are gems. Oh well, more for me, us. I need to play this song more, perhaps lead off on a new playlist. New Life Strategies Mix… before it’s too late.

Wonderful song with a finely crafted and serious message and very tasty work on drums, guitar, and especially bass. One of my favourite XTC tracks. Rediscovering the delights of these songs with watching your videos JP, and enjoying every moment. BTW, another band you might well like that frequently hit Andy-like lyrical highs is The Mutton Birds - their songs "Dominion Road" and "Anchor Me" would give you a taste.

I couldn’t think of any XTC songs. Then I heard the voice. Oh yeah. I enjoyed them in the early eighties. Haven’t heard much since. I generally am interested in vocals and guitar. Always found it interesting that you rarely comment on guitar, no matter how impressive it is. Hmm? Oh well. Good song.

A really XTC song (which is a synonym for various positive attributes I'll leave to your imagination). If you get in the mood for more of that guitar, Dave Gregory had (maybe still has) his own band, *Tin Spirits* , and the song of theirs I like best is *Little Eyes* (maybe for the guitar, but it's just beautiful in every way, so that's making too much of a single aspect in this case). kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKnUmYePodRjoc0
