The Xtone's concept of banking the 6 switches and expression jack to 3 for a total of 21 controllers is great. But the XTone's most serious shortcoming is that messages are sent on footswitch release than on press. Where setting time based effects that are synced to tempo, you have to consciously be aware to clock the release of the footswitch rather than its press. I have experience with this because the TC Nova System behaved the same way. So whenever I have to send a message that locks to a beat, I tend the press on a syncopation before the beat in order to release on the beat.

@@LeoGibsonGtr By the way, I have the smaller Xtone Duo, it is a great device and using the ipad as guitar processor has worked amazingly good for me, so I want to upgrade in the same path. After watching your video, although I love the Xtone Duo, I think that for a more robust hardware having more switches and 2 expression pedal ports TS Mega is the way to go for an upgrade. Still, for the ones wanting a small interface for guitar and voice simultaneously with ipad, I can't recommend enough the Xtone Duo. Only con is that the preamp is not the best for adding gain to dynamic mics (FYI - the preamp works only for the mic channel, no preamp for guitar input). With condenser works great. Cheers! I have subscribed. Thanks :)

Another great review. I have the Xtone and am quite happy with it. The one problem with all of these (I believe), is if you are going to an amp AND a PA. You don’t want cab sim going to your amp but you want cab sim going to the PA. There doesn’t appear to be any way to turn on cab sim to the XLR out but have it off going to the amp. The way I’ve done it is to not use the Xtone’s XLR out but to send my signal to a DI box which adds cab sim to its XLR out (H&K Red Box 5) but sends the software modeler’s patch to the amp without cab sim.

Xtone has 6 x 3 footswitches ;) thats 18 assignable switches for 18 things in a plugin and, 3 different expression. So that makes the Xtone the unit with most switches that you can actually use live. Just hold A or B or C to switch to the next set of footswitches. I know because i use it that way,. For example, 6 stomps on A, preset and Banks on B, lopper functions on C.

The xTone pro has in reality much more foot switches because it supports long hold press like the boss gt-1000. This allows to switch between banks which means if you long press button B then it switches to a new bank and you have another 6 foot switches + exp to assign. Overall you can have 3 banks, so you have 18 foot switches (3x6) and 3 exp (3x1) to assign. I own a megashifter and the biggest disadvantage is that it doesn’t support long hold press. Several people requested it at the meloaudio support page because it would require only a software update but nothing happened since a more than a year.

Per inserirlo nel loop dell'ampli e usare i drive prima dell'ampli e reverberi e delay post pre dell'ampli dovresti usare il 4 cable method...non sono sicuro che queste interfaccia lo consentano. Hi Luigi, I've not done a direct comparison with other not guitar oriented interfaces (I mean the ones without footswitches, etc.), so I don't have a clear answer (I'm sorry for that), and in this video I'm focusing on mobile apps, so you should select only the interfaces that are compliant with iOS... for instance in this case high end audio interfaces like the UA Apollo are exluded. The audio interface that is compatible with iOS and should sound better (I've not tested it directly) is the Apogee duet, but the price is gonna be sligtly higher. Cause I would also like to use it to record my stage piano. Would be greate if you can check this out using the xtone pro.

Hi, actually the xTone PRO should have better converters as the PRO has 114dB of dynamic range and the DUO has 108dB of dynamic range. As regards the recording, I'm not sure as I don't own the DUO...you should be able to record two tracks, and probably the gain control is shared between the two channels...not sure here. Leo Gibson Ur propably right... Let's make it big, why not. I think I will also be able to benefit from the expanded midi functionalities. This is great! I have been researching the same thing. I was actually leaning towards a 4x4 desktop interface over the pedal format ones, since iOS can only use one interface at a time, and this hasn’t been fixed for years. I think some interfaces also provide loopback inputs, which can solve problems like capturing audio from apps that don’t support inter app audio. I know most iOS workflows probably only need 2x2 right now, but having an additional 1x1 lets you loop out to physical pedals or pull in other audio without needing a separate mixer. What do you think of this approach?
@LeoGibsonGtr4 жыл бұрын
Hi, first of all sorry for late answering. Well, in my opinion these interface are perfect in order to play live with plugins. What I would need (and maybe is similar to what you are suggesting) is a stereo loop that should allows us to insert an external stereo effect in the signal chain, like a Strymon volante. This is possible with pedalboards like the GE 300 of the Helix and I think it should be a nice addition also for these type of interfaces. Thank you for your message!
@AlanShieh4 жыл бұрын
Leo Gibson Thanks! I will keep that in mind. Also thinking of getting a second device like older iPod Touch, plus entry level interface, to inject stereo effects, etc later in the chain. That is pretty small and affordable. Anyway another piece of feedback is that some of the interfaces you reviewed here lack native ASIO drivers (very surprising at this price point), which is a turnoff for some PC users.

I dont think the TS Mega power without DC is disadvantage but is an advantage in my opinion. You can power it using a mobile powerbank with its usb input, making it more mobile and one less worry to source for a power adapter for a live performance. I have also found it more convenient to have my iPad, my mobile phone and also the TS Mega all to be powered by a powerbank. This way, i save more space in my storage compartment in my bass bag. All i need to focus is getting a reliable powerbank with 3 USB output ports with a big mAH capacity to feed power to all 3 items. One more green thumbs up and one less red thumbs down for the TS Mega.

great comparison. I've heard reports that the tone shifter changes the tone of the plugins leaving less bass and with a thinner sound than the original made by the plugins.. Hi Leo! I find really useful your vids, thank you so much. One question: TS Mega has 12V phantom instead of 48V. Do you know how it affects to usual condenser mics? Do all of them work properly at 12V? Second question: I think that GE Labs profiles work OK when playing through the same interface that was used to create the profile. Actually, in one of your vids, it can be seen that GE200 doesn´t sound the same as iPad with interface. I think this is due to the input gain. In the interface you have to tweak the preamp to avoid clipping prior to profiling, and that setting is always going to be different than the one in a floor multi FX, which is fixed. In that vid, you noticed the GE200 had more gain (if I recall). This is important. And now the question: would you be able to compare profiles made by each interface? For instance, TSMega made profile, played with TSMega. And Xtone made profile, played with Xtone. That would give an idea of the queality of the interface in the final result of the whole process of profiling and playing. Another subject would be to share your experience while setting input/output levels for profiling. I think it´s not as easy as it seems... since you have to manage to avoid clipping while keeping a healthy signal in the mic input. Also, if one tries to do it at home, maybe it´s not easy to make the amp sound good (the neighbours would suffer a little), and profiling at low levels could lead to frustrating results... What do you think about all of this?
@LeoGibsonGtr4 жыл бұрын
Hi, this is a very useful post, thank you and thank you also for your compliments! Let me try to answer: - Phantom power: you are right and I didn't noticed it. Actually some microhpnes require 48v and other 9v and so on. It's a pretty technical topic and I think that for further details, you can check out this link: www.sounddevices.com/phantom-powering-basics/ - Profiles made with different interfaces: here I think that, as you said, the most difficult thing to do while profiling is to properly set the levels. I don't think that the interface you are using is gonna make a lot of difference (unless you are using high end interfaces and high end pre amps), but it needs to give you an easy and proper way to set volumes. I think that xTone and TS Mega are equal in this category, while for instance I was struggeling with my iAudio iConnectivity, as I was not able to easly change volumes with iOS devices. - Profiles volumes: you are right, you need to set the volumes in order to make your valve amp sound good...and therefore, mostly for high gain tones and not master volumes amps...you need high volumes...for instance I did the profile of the Plexi at very high volumes...not possibile in not isolated rooms (in my opinion), while I was able to make the profile of the Lone Star at lower volumes, as this amp distortion is mostly in the pre amp valves. It could be an interesting topic for a video...I will think about it. Thank you once more for your message and sorry for the long answer!!!
@dheranYT4 жыл бұрын
Hey, on the contrary! Thank you for your detailed reply! Yes, I agree that interfaces will not give such a big difference per se. BUT I think that it's important to ensure that your going to have approx the same input gain... And that's much easier if you use the same interface that was used to profile, because they way you're able to adjust the gain in a consistent way. That input gain affects A LOT in the behaviour of the profile... Just in the same way that the volume pot on the guitar can make the same rig sound clean or distorted depending on it's setting. That's what i wanted to say in my previous post. If using a different interface is going to make the gain different to the one used while profiling, the result will not be accurate. I'm noticing it when using profiles from the cloud. They're so much gainy that are almost unusable for me... And I think it's just because of my interface, which is a crap, and my guitar signal is entering the profile in a totally different way as it should. Thanks again for your great vids, friend. I really love them!

If you have the possibility to make profiles at home, and you have an iOS device, you can try the Mooer GE Labs App (24€), the MeloAudio Tone Shifter (250€) and an SM 57 (100€) to capture the tone of your Mark IV. Another interface could be the Apogee duet, but it's gonna cost you 550€ alone...so maybe you can search for a second hand unit. Thank you for your message....and please, if possible, let me know the solution you are gonna choose...I think it's a pretty interesting topic!!!

@@LeoGibsonGtr thank you very much indeed. About the Kemper: live it would not sit/slice through our mix, no matter the volume... and keeping it just for home was plain overkill.. thank you for thé advice, i Will keep you posted. Kindest of regards.

The tone shifter has a really annoying high pitch frequency sound that I find unusable

@Leo Gibson 🤣 I like the ideas of these all in one guitar midi foot controllers but I think a controller like behringer fcb1010 and an audio interface is the way to go for future proofing !
