I like how she described the film as 'it's not a lesbian film, it's a story about love.' I think this is how people, especially the interviewer, should view this film.
@ALINA-eo1cr

Yeah, not really. Most of the issues that made the movie interesting centered around the idea of homosexuality and how it is viewed in society, specifically in France. It is a love story, but it is a love story affected by the underlying issues that surround lesbianism in France. I personally felt very sorry for the character Adele because in many ways her life mimics some issues from my own life. I'm referring here to the secrecy and double life that lesbianism in a homophobic society implies, the need to fit in and to try to change your sexuality to be straight to be accepted by your community and to not be shunned by your parents, colleagues, friends etc. Her story is essentially sad as she ends up alone, without any support, regardless of how much she tries to fit in. It is a sad story, a love that doesn't really blossom. A lot of this is not discussed because of the obsession with the lesbian sex scenes, very pornographic indeed, and it is a shame since in essence the movie has a sad ending. It is not a love story with a happy ending, but a very sad rendition of how romantic life tends to evolve for most lesbians I know who live in such contexts. The shame that one inevitably feels for being homosexual does not let love flourish normally, like in the case of straight couples, no matter how deep that love is. In a normal setting, with a straight couple, they would have ended up married with kids, living happily ever after until they died ...which ironically is a boring ending for a movie.

This movie changed my life. I don't know why but while everyone is ranting and raving on how gorgeous Adele is, I just can't stop staring at this lovely womans face in interviews. I was super attracted to her as a tomboy at first when I saw the movie, which is strange because I am a femme lesbian who generally likes other femmes. But with or without makeup this is the most beautiful woman I've ever seen in my life. I'm just so astounded, even the gap in her teeth is gorgeous. Maybe I'm feeling a little too single right now

I don´t like when he just aks about the "being a lesbian" parts. The movie was not about that. It was about passionate love, how it changes lives and how it makes you discover not just the world, but yourself. People need to start to understand, homo/hetero/bi love, it´s that...love. I do admit, even being a straight woman, i found the film hot as hell. But i found it equally beautiful. I was shipping this couple so hard that when the movie ended i cried because they didn´t end up together. So sad. I mean, i´m still thinking Emma still loved her. :(

@Muzzer27
@Muzzer27 10 жыл бұрын
Sure, the film was beautiful, a story about deep, passionate and devoted love.The lesbian part was secondary the the very matter of the movie. You already spoiled the movie to some of those who haven't seen it yet, but what the heck! My interpretation of the plot is such that the fact that Emma kicked Adele out of her house in spite of the latter truly regreting and apologizing multiple times to Emma was because Emma had already had an affair with the woman she finally ended up being in a relashionship with at the end of the movie. Adele's infidelity was just an exuse for Emma to dump her. Truth be told, though, I agree with you that Emma didn't stop loving Adele, and she somewhat regretted letting her go that night and not accepting her apology.

That is a very legitimate question, because both actresses are straight, and even though they are very professional, it has to be difficult to play a lesbian role. On the other hand, i understand the LOVE factor, but shit this movie is pornographic big time. You can express love and passion in a more implicit way when it comes to a movie. This is my opinion.

Jonmad17 I didn't do in-depth research on the interviewer and website for a video I just stumbled across one night so I didn't know that. I explained the reasons I found him off-putting above. Regardless of his sexuality, he doesn't have a great grasp on gender theory in my opinion. But I see you commented elsewhere that you enjoyed the interview, so that's good for you. I just disagree.
@Jonmad17
@Jonmad17 11 жыл бұрын
weatherby551 I think by 'real' he meant openly and identifiably lesbian. Adele's sexuality is left ambiguous by the end of the film. And she never comes out to her family or her coworkers, she never quite socializes with other gay women or identifies with the lesbian subculture. I don't think he meant to imply that only butch lesbians are real lesbians.

I don't get why every journalist is asking the same question. Enough already about the sex scene. Léa's clearly getting uncomfortable but being a professional she deals with it well! C'mon ppl be a bit more groundbreaking and do an interview with depth. How about that incredible fight scene or that emotional café scene. I rly would wanna know more about those or the emotional journey they made more than the constant focus on the SEX. What's wrong with ppl...they must be so sex-deprived...

***** He means that Emma is a "real lesbian" in the sense that, at least, early in the movie, when she has the blue hair and wears jeans and jeans jackets, she is deliberately projecting the image of a lesbian (even of a butch lesbian) and is therefore recognizable as one. Adele is not recognizable as such and hence does not fit this definition.

You guys all know that the French language is constructed very differently to English, in that everything, even tables and chairs have gendered names. When Lea says things like "to be a man" just remember how much can be lost in translation, because English is her second language.
@williambitterwood3300
@williambitterwood3300 9 жыл бұрын
She is describing the way she created her character in the film. As written, Emma is sort of butch, a very experienced and confident pursuer of this shy and inexperienced girl. Seydoux is saying that the way she achieved the right mindset to be that character was by imagining how it feels to be man in the same situation, confidently pursuing a girl. All part of the process of creating a character. Actors do it all the time.

She's very graceful and elegant in the interview and I fully agree that the interviewer is cringeworthy, but I also think that referring to her character as "the man" and that she had to be "the man" in the sex scenes it's a bit binary and therefore constrictive. Although I love how open minded she is and I know she doesn't mean any harm, it would do more justice to the complexity that this movie offers to talk thorugh a more broad gender perspective/lens :-)

I first saw her in Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol, and got kind of scared of her, she played a ice princess and ice cold killer, but she's a lot warmer in the warm color blue. Suddenly blue is a hot color. At least she's hot. Even better impression I get watching interviews with her, and now I watch as many I can. Blue is the Warmest Colour lies beyond the reach of the politics of lesbianism and gay pride but i am disappointed to hear the actors and director constantly dismiss the truth that it is more a lesbian love story than a love story. A third of the film (1 hour) deals with a teenage girl's discovery of being turned on by women. That trauma belongs to lesbians and gays. Its a shame we go through it , but in the acknowledging spirit of this film (real heart break is forever) the realisation that one is bent as a banana is not an experience shared in any straight love story. Although I hear the marketing wisdom in repeatedly dismissing that it is a lesbian love story for the more digestible concept that it is a love story that everyone can relate to and enjoy, I just wish after making such art. they would celebrate, not glide over, the strongest contribution to the sensuality of the film: the fact that it is sexual love between two women. LBTQUI alphabet soup people are always having to distill the love from straight stories which for the most part are barely relevant to us, and so why not own the indisputable fact that this is the best lesbian love depiction every presented on film and have the grit to own it.... :)

Of course Lesbians would be into this movie. I however am not a lesbian, but I know quite a bit about art history and I would've been more then happy to have spoken with Lea about the fine art's. We could've gone to the Louvre or Musee d' Orsey and I could speak for many hours about artists from the Renaissance to the Romantics, from the impressionists to pop art. Adele could've come as well. They only mentioned Picasso in the bar, Lea's character being a figurative Lesbian painter should've mentioned perhaps Renoir and Klimt. Ah well missed opportunities!

***** That's a good analogy. I felt the sex was a little much in this film, but I'm not used to French films, so that's probably why I feel that way. I loved the film though. All the praise is well placed.

"a love story, a lesbian love story, that's never happened before". ummm... it has? I can think of about 10 movies that are about gay couples.

Though correct, the context is this: Julie Doiron, who authored the graphic novel that the film is based on criticized the fact that no lesbians were involved with the film (at all!). Thistroubled her; the story is a lesbian love story, by a lesbian author, and though the issue of representation is a hot topic, her criticism, as a lesbian, is quite interesting ... hence all those questions from various journalists.

Why are people always over emphasizing the "lesbian" element not only in this movie but in other films as well? The questions always relate to what "lesbians" do when they make love, and all kind of technicalities when it comes to sex between women. Guys!!! It is love...and when there is love and passion, trust me.... people ( regardless of the gender involved ) know what to do with each other. Thanks God Lea says it at the end of the interview...it is a film that celebrates LOVE.that's the key
