Well, Maria was a caretaker(or can even be considered a foster mother) of Shadow the Hedgehog. Later the two became best friends because they grew up together so back then they were like brother and sister. And it would be best if they were left that way, otherwise it would be a LIIIIIIIITTLE awkward, you know, like dating your brother/sister.
