This is why Merlina is one of the greatest villians of all. She just wanted everything to be immortal and last forever but Sonic tought her that the meaning of life is to live it to it's fullest with the time we have. This got to me real good when I beat sonic and the black knight espically since I had just went to my dad's funeral a week before.

The song's message is that Merlina knows that the kingdom will end, regardless of her actions; so she willingly embraces darkness in order to preserve the kingdom. She does not want to hurt sonic but she will hurt him if he gets in the way. She ultimately gives him two choices, turn from her side and fight her, or face the new eternity with her. Its a sad song about her becoming "Evil" despite her good intentions for the kingdom, and how she knows what she is doing is wrong.

While you are right in many of those points, I would disagree about her believing that what she is doing is wrong and thus making her "evil". Evil itself is the selfish decision to profit from another's misfortune and pain. She has a heart-felt belief that what she is doing is right and will benefit everyone in the kingdom; because at the end of the day, she isn't committing her plan to benefit herself. Her sadness is drawn from the thought of all of her fellow kin and people dying due to the kingdom coming to ruin, and the fact that she is powerless to protect and save them. From that emotion, she desired to fix the problem by allying herself with magic she knew she couldn't completely control. What I believe she didn't totally understand was of the price of her salvation. She was blinded to the fact that her deliverance would have killed everyone she wanted to protect. That's what makes this battle one of the best (if not the best) of the Sonic final boss battles. Both sides are fighting fiercely for their own convictions, each believing 100% that what they are doing is for the best of everyone.

shadonic565 I would very much argue your point on "all evil plots start out as 'good intentions' ". A large majority of wicked and evil plots are done so with malicious intent. In fact, calling them "evil" would certainly point to the maker of the plot as being evil. Merlina's plan wasn't evil in the slightest: it was misguided. A plot only becomes evil when the mindset of the plotter is bent on harming others, and Merlina certainly wished no harm on her people; rather, salvation.

Night Slider Good and evil are purely human concepts, and as their meaning are vague (that's a positive/negative thing to do), they're interpreted differently.But the basic idea is that true goodness is something being done to no helpful effect to oneself, but to the well-being of everyone else, and being fully aware, while true evil is doing things purely for oneself, even if they screw everyone over. Nobody's truly good nor truly evil. Nobody wants to be evil, nor be seen as evil, several of these atrocities have self-justifications to ease any guilt they possess. Just know that the worse things to exist are due to ignorance, or worse yet mis-information.
