Fun fact; when Jotaro stopped his own heart during the battle against DIO. Polnareff thought that jotaro had really died and he was the last crusader. Which is why he got angry and attacked DIO.

That first bit where he's lunging to finish DIO, it's Polnareff's final gambit. He's legit the last crusader left (in his head) with the burden of killing that fiend, and it's way more impactful than it should've been.

The old movie gave Polnareff some spot light here. The attack was actually necessary. Jotaro had already stopped his heart, and he needed time to restart it. That's when Polnareff struck. Jotaro then also recovers, and he does the skull smash.
